Transylvania - The heart of Romania | DW Documentary

Transylvania has a lot to offer: beautiful cities, endless forests, fascinating traditions. All of these are cultivated with great dedication by the people of the region.
Dumitru Pop, for example, works at the "funniest cemetery in the world”. His mission: to change people's view of death. He carves and paints wooden crosses for the deceased. He decides which anecdotes best commemorate the dead. Too much alcohol? A tyrannical mother-in-law? Dumitru doesn't sugarcoat anything -- and adds a dash of humor to the saddest of circumstances.
Transylvania is nestled in the Carpathian Mountains and boasts seemingly endless forests and pristine nature. In towns like Sighisoara and Biertan, imposing churches remind us that Transylvania was shaped by German culture. Among the people the filmmakers meet are two Transylvanian Saxons who are renovating their house using ancient tools -- and the knowledge passed down by their ancestors.
The largest ethnic minority in the country, the Roma, meet at the horse market in Gilau. The horse trade has been one of the most respected Roma professions for centuries. The market is impressive and puts on a great show. But it’s also a kind of family reunion. For the horse trader Costell and the market organizer Pufi Moldovan, it’s an exciting day.

I drank the cleanest and coldest water of my life from a mountain spring around Borsec, Transylvania. I also had the best sleep and appetite there due to the extremely fresh air. Spending there 10 days was priceless and felt like the only therapy that one needs from the pressure of work and city life. That summer I decided to avoid the sea, and take some real rest. Transylvania was the best decision - no stress, a truly relaxing vacation, a medicine for body and mind. I can't wait to go back to the area. Stunning, beautiful Romania.

Basically what the documentary is showing is that Transylvania is represented by Maramures (which is a completely different region that was never part of Transylvania ), by the culture of Rroma people, by long lost germans who are trying to revive old traditions, and of course by Klausenburg a city founded by germans. This is utter nonsense. What about the Romanian history behind all the cities, the Hungarian heritage, and what about the Ancient Roman settlers that founded many cities in Transylvania, cities like Cluj-Napoca (Klausenburg). I am amazed by the amount of nonsense. 😂

This documentary is flawed, I’ve watched 7 minutes and I’m already annoyed about the misleading information. I don’t understand this documentary. What are you trying to show? Except for the part with the Merry Cemetery, what are you actually showing? That Transylvania is lost in time and backward? 'In this male-dominated blabla.' You could have talked about the beautiful landscape like the mountains, the hospitality, the fact that in Transylvania, at least in the bigger cities, they are modernizing fast, making huge leaps. You are showing horses and carriages on the road to make people believe that's the whole country. Please...

@@sticlavoda5632 Of course they are allowed to show the life of minorities. However, I was expecting @DW Documentary to make a professional and well-documented documentary about a region of Romania, Transylvania. A lot of people who see these documentaries online don't know much about Romania, maybe they are not even from Europe, so it makes sense that good-quality documentary explains as an introduction that this is a region of Romania where different minorities live. In the same time, the documentary mentions nothing about the big cities or the highly educated people that live there. The documentary starts by stating the fact that it is a male-dominated society, as if the Romanian society is from the 19th century. @@mihaelaconstantin9672 I agree, as a Romanian also, but the interest in Romania is particularly for its archaisms and traditional way of life. This is an Orientalist outlook onto our culture, but it makes sense why they would show it. They were actively looking for portraying such a culture. The documentary talks about Cluj, shows it, and discusses the German minorities with a high respect for them, considering that the Germans themselves made this documentary. There is absolutely no connection between roman Napoca/ dacian Napuca and the medieval town of Cluj founded and developed by saxon colonists besides the placement (Napuca wasn't even on the same place with the roman and medieval towns). The roman ruins are unbothered since the IVth century which means that there cannot be the case of continuous living . When Cluj was founded, only the base of the roman city walls were above the ground. Napoca is a predecessor at best but not the same with the actual city of Cluj. And the actual name is the result of a fatasy revival designed by the communists in the 70's not an organic toponymical evolution.

First seconds into the show and I already hear, "Male dominated region"?! Where did you get that impression? And the first Romanian interviewed is a Roma? This goes to show you that the West thinks Romanians are Roma people. I would expect this from an ignorant foreigner, but not from DW... A few lessons for DW: * Roma people only make about 3% of Romania's population. * Roma people are all over Europe, not only in Romania. * Roma is not to be confused with Romanian. Although they may sound the same, they are not the same people.

A male dominated culture in ROMANIA, and then you proceed with an interview with a guy that says that he's roma? Roma and romanians are not ethnically the same thing, get it through your damn heads. Never have I also heard this male dominated culture bullshit in Romania my entire life. I'm romanian and we're not some fucking nomadic tribe with horse traditions (not even all roma have these sort of traditions, it depends on region, some have been lost), but we're a fully established civilization that has been here for THOUSANDS OF YEARS, our culture consists of so many myths and legends involving women spirits and making the woman sacred at times, especially paired with the heavy orthodox christian influence that sees The Holy Marry as mother to us all as christians, so indeed we are not a male dominated culture by no means! 6:35 Misinformation! The history of Cluj begins with the population of the territory of the modern city by Dacian and Celt tribes, who supposedly gave the area the name of Napoca, and its conquest by the Roman Empire. Promoted to the rank of a colony, the Roman fort Napoca is for a time the capital of the Dacia Porolissensis province. After the Roman retreat and centuries of invasions by migratory peoples, Cluj was repopulated with invading Saxon colonists in the 13th century

A documentary which starts with a basically FLAWED information, is not good. Cluj-Napoca had some Saxon population but has nothing to do with them. It is Kolozsvar and predominantly founded and built by Hungarians. Everything you see today of the historic city and historic significance is Hungarian. You can find Roman heritage underground like in any other old European town… There are other cities far away which were founded by Germans because the Hungarian king brought them in to work the fields after the mongols decimated Eastern Europe in the 12-15 th century….

Disclaimer: the documentary focuses on a small bit of the rural / traditional Ardeal (including Transilvania). It has some small misses, like saying that Maramureș is part of Transilvania, wrong, and showing a few minutes later the map of Transilvania, with Maramureș not included, correct. But there is a big blunder, please make your research - you are supposed to keep a standard, about Cluj Napoca being founded by German settlers in the Middle Ages. There are visible ruins from the Dacian - Roman era (the city was named then Napoca), excavated and covered with a thick glass in the city centre, for everyone who is interested to see - just saying... Leaving aside the blunder, nice documentary.

@@dacian_1346 The political entity of Principality of Transilvania is gone for hundreds of years, so no, Transilvania doesn't include today more than the historical region of Transilvania. The documentary was done this year, not hundreds of years ago. For the other part, with variations (sometimes big ones) on it's population, surface, etc, that settlement had a continuity from it's founding, Before Christ. The German population settled there by the Hungarian crown changed, expanded, improved, developed - or any other synonyms - the existing settlement, without question. But they didn't found that settlement, it was already there, with a continuous existence for more than 1000 years at the time they got there.

Why you always try to change our history and identity in Transylvania? Crisana, Maramures and Banat are just sub-regions of Transylvania not separated entities!!
