Thank you for telling us there isn't the usual Shyamalan twist. His daughter wrote most of the songs that she performed maybe that's why he pushed his daughter on the audience a bit too much.
After seeing this movie, the better theory is that Trap exists in the same universe as Glass, Unbreakable, and Split. Without spoiling, consider that he is able to do (what he does throughout the film) only if there is a supernatural angle.
Same score out of me! I actually had a good bit of fun with this movie, and thought it was a pretty entertaining yet messy little cat and mouse flick. Definitely loses some steam toward the end and the conclusion is a bit undercooked, but as someone that hasn't vibed with M. Night Shyamalan for a while I was surprised that it worked for me. Great review, Chris!
The Karen scenes are an added obstacle for him. They reveal the smoothness of Cooper changing skins. How he manipulates her, how she frustrates him. And there is humor there, too.😊
You must have VERY low standards lol..i thought this movie was pretty bad and I'm a huge M. Night fan.. This movie felt like it was more about Night putting his daughter into the limelight than anything else. I also thought the acting was really bad by his daughter as well. And the overall feel of a soft serial killer movie at a poppy teen concert didnt mesh well for me at all.
The movie is getting mixed reviews which is not surprising with Shamylan people either really love or really dislike him but everybody for the most part agrees Josh steals the show in this I am glad he is back and I hope he does more projects
One of my favorite chase/pursuit type films is Silence of the Lambs and yes, I get that is mostly considered as a detective thriller but, it could definitely be considered a chase/pursuit type movie as well because, of Clarice trying to find Buffalo Bill’s hideout and free the senator’s daughter so yeah, don’t tell me it’s definitely not a chase/pursuit type movie when it definitely is based on my definition of the genre.
So, you ranked this a bit higher than i thought you would. My feelings about the first 70 mins were pretty positive. Sure, there's a cat and mouse thing going on. And to say there was plot conveniences is an understatement. But i think I enjoyed the father/daughter dynamic and taking your teen to something that is extremely important to them. To see the excitement and joy on their face is as heartwarming as it gets. Hartnett and the young teen really had great chemistry, or as she would say, their scenes were crispy. This mirrors a lot in the overall movie with M. Night basically doing the same for his daughter. Which i felt was kind of cool. Music was fine... not my style, but it's good. Then the third act starts... I think...this movie ends three times. If you're not invested by then, there's no hope. It's clunky, illogical, and out head scratching. Chris, I agree with a lot you said... but there is a twist.... Spoilers... ..... ..... ... The twist is...the movie itself is a trap. As the third act continues and the movie itself changes... the audience started looking at each other and realized that we were baited into an hour debut of his daughters songs. And even though the movie and plot were essentially over, we were trapped till the end, thinking there had to be something more... I thought Sarah Paulson or Samuel Jackson were going to appear from the unbreakable trilogy. Or is this all a dream... something interesting... but nope, it was there to Trap you for an hour and 50 mins ish.
@MoviesAndMunchies before you two KILL it on the live show......should we finish the pie.....??? I mean... really? I thought they might be both in on it.....and she was really the mastermind.....and she would have been verbally abusing him like his mom. That would have been interesting.
@@chrisretzlaff2895 You know this will only take me 5 bites. That would have been a really great addition to the story, and certainly would have added a true twist!
I’m not an M. Night Shyamalan hater whatsoever I am glad that Chris’s review has a point where he straight up says “there’s not a twist” which, had I not been told that I would have left disappointed but, I’m going to an 11pm screening with my dad and possibly my mom who knows, after he gets off work at 10.
Pray for snger? No twist.. wide awake? No twist. Sixth Sense ?? Twist . Unbreakable,( its a Trilogy so it was a reveal along split and glass) signs? No twist. The village no twist, lady in the water no twist😂,air bender no twist, after earth no twist. The visit twist. Old a reveal and knock the cabin no twist
Thanks for the no twist heads up but i disagree. The Fugitive wasn't in a single location. Yes, in Chicago, but plenty of different buildings and even the tunnel section with Tommy Lee Jones drawing down on Ford. Naw, I think that's a bad analogy with all due respect!
Big supporter of M Night, huge fan of Hartnett. But this was a 1-star movie for me. Saying there's a couple of logic issues and plot conveniences is the understatement of the year. It was just impossible for me to enjoy a movie that just kept insulting the intelligence of the audience over and over, each time worse than the time before.
Absolutely! He manages to escape despite the cops knowing who he is,and then fights a SWAT team member, and then after being poisoned and tazered from guts another SWAT team member, the code getting mentioned a lot and one of them even said the code!, Lady Raven's entourage not being checked.
I’m a little surprised how few people picked up the preposterous concept of a serial killer who butchered 12 people in 7 years treating his daughter to this 20,000 seat concert because she got a good report card. I mean, c’mon, that’s the first clue that this movie is going to be a parody. A thousand SWAT guys guarding all the doors. A little bitty grey haired lady profiling him as she directs the search. The hilarious improbabilities! I loved the suspenseful cat and mouse premise, Cooper’s shrewd creativity in finding escapes, the machinations he goes thru trying to balance the Doting Daddy with the killer on the lam. One critic called it M Night’s turning Hitchcock on its head. Yes! As Cooper slowly realizes he is indeed in a seemingly inescapable trap, his two personalities collide. He isn’t just using his daughter as part of his facade, he finds a protective love for her (and later we see him remind his wife of the things the kids have to do! Another preposterous detail! An OCD moment for the cagey psycho.) There are a lot of people I know who are rooting for Cooper! I mean, how outlandish is that? 😂 Hubby and I were so entertained by this movie we watched it twice. Once we realized this is a parody of the genre, we got a kick out of it. And Hartnett gives a terrific performance. That last scene where he’s eating pie and tying up the story’s loose ends, his expressions, his eyes, slyly over the top malevolence. I heartily agree Saleka’s speaking role is miscast. I would have liked the bumbling Jamie accidentally get them out of the arena. After all, as we find out, the trap isn’t in the arena, it’s at home. And we loved the final scene with the wheel spoke and that devilish laugh. You know he’s going to escape again! 😂 Will there be a sequel where Cooper and the profiler go toe to toe? Hmmmm.
Oh my gosh this was just an ad for his daughter’s singing career. Shameful. Yes Josh was good. But the movie was predictable and silly. AWFUL. Come on! 🤠💕
No it was not predictable. No way you knew they'd send Nancy Pelosi into the house to catch a serial killer! no way you'd think the wife thought either he's cheating on her or HE'S A SERIAL KILLER!?! And nobody looked at the cameras at the arena? And we used 7k swat members to catch this guy but once we do? Put him in the back by himself. You know, like after he's escaped us THREE times, we don't need to worry. Let him sit alone. 😅
They should have gone with the twist where Spencer was the killer and cooper had him held at his house wanting to chop him up like he killed his wife. But had to go to concert since he forgot and was late.
I also hope by movie’s end that over the top mom aka “Karen” character Chris is talking about gets her just desserts by getting killed by Josh Hartnett’s character to be honest because, I can’t stand people like that in my own life that I run into on the streets so what makes you think I want to see them in my escapism for 2 hours at the movie theater? News flash, I don’t and as long as she gets her due I’ll be fine though but, don’t spoil it at all, if anybody feels like responding to this comment, simply say yes she does, or no she doesn’t without any extra context please as I haven’t seen the movie yet and like I said, won’t be until 11pm tonight
Shooting this in 35 mm isn't such a great idea. The scene where the women are on the backseat, you wonder why Josh's daughter's face isn't fully in the screen. You're being too kind to this film. It's half baked, unsatisfying and is often running out of gas.
I saw it. I didn't really care for it, but maybe okay to watch at home. No twist okay, but it just wasn't all that great in my opinion. It felt more like a commerical for his daughter then an actual movies. I respect all opinions, but you happen to be in the minority in liking this one my friend.
Not in the minority. This is another of his love it or hate it films. I think a lot of the audience wasn’t paying attention to the nuggets that lead us to find this is a fun take on the thriller genre. He TOLD us in the promos this would not be a Twisty movie, that it was something new. The only thing I agree about is the miscasting of Saleka once she’s off the stage. She hasn’t learned how to act yet 🫤. In a post release interview I was surprised to learn the lyrics of the songs are reflecting the inside of Cooper’s mind. That didn’t come across at all. I barely paid attention to the concert. I was fixed on Cooper and Riley.
My favorite parts were the ghost mom. The bad dialogue. The nepotism showcasing M. Nights daughter aka lady raven. The underused fbi profiler. The risk to a concert crowd to find one guy based on a receipt. The dumb driver. The dumb lady raven. The dumb instagram live feed of placing a teen at risk. The drugged pie. The limo scene dummy. The picking up the bike scene. The end in the truck scene. This movie was pulled out of Nights @ss. Lol
@@pobstrel lol yup. That was priceless. Note to self. Just get tazzed like 3 times to overcome a sedative drug dosage that your wife took the time to mix a powdered drug with sugar into your pie.
@@mgariepy42 parody? Holy cow. Your brain is fried. Since you pretty simple minded, send me 10k in us money since you are such a nice person. I’ll love you forever
