In this show I try as many different trap dyes as I can to see which one performs the best, in my opinion of course. Overall they are all easy to use and work as expected, some easier than others. To learn more about trapping visit www.coyotetrappingschool.com

The Full Metal Jacket is much like Corroseal Rust Converter for vehicle frames. Let traps get a coat of surface rust and dip. Comes out Black and prevents further rust. Works really well.

This is really good to know. In Florida, all we're allowed to use us cage traps & snares on pubic lands. folks will steal cage traps, so I use snares and lightly spay paint my snares. I am starting a Nuisance Animal Removal Service, and we can use foot holds & body grips on private property with a free permit. So this is really good know for first time trap dippers.

Thank You for the information and all the energy put into the video. I have used the speed dip for water traps with great success, especially in salt water conditions. Have not had good luck with it on canines, I think due to the residue smell of the gasoline. Traditonally used the dye and wax for canines, going to try Full Mental Jacket on some canine traps for coyote and wolf. I was told if there is active rust on the trap, and then dipped in the FMJ, the active rust will flake off the FMJ. I'll let all know, how it goes. Enjoy your educational video's, Alaska John

By the way... I just saw a video about dying traps that made a lot of sense. The guy used rustolium paint and mixed it with 50% asitone and 50% paint. He got a nice coat, but I'd bet you could mix it with gas, mineral spirits or colman fuel. I don't like asitone because it evaporates so quickly, but the other 3 don't, so the left over will store longer. Just a thought, rustolium protect metal longer and it sounds like a good ide.

Cheapest way and best way for me is boiling them in black walnuts. its the same stuff as logwood just not concentrated and its free if you use a wood fire to boil your pot.

I found that any gasoline or petroleum product leaves a smell on the traps. No matter what you do to them to mask it. Animals can smell this and are repelled by it . I have tested the natural black walnut, oak leaves and maple leaf free dyes and found the free leaves and walnuts catch many more critters. Each leaf has its own color. So you can choose for yourself . Black walnuts seem to dye the darkest color in my opinion. FYI

I’ve thought about trying speed dip in boiling water but I use dye in log wood powder or spray paints and air out and then dip in the fmj either way to cover and dip in the end with fmj.Works good. But I’m thinking about ZEP floor finish floor wax $15 a gallon and basically the same thing people use it and say it’s the same just had less smell.

I've heard Clint Locklear who invented it say on his podcast that he would recommend filing off the dog after dipping and drying it to make sure it still fires smooth.And also if your'e going to use your traps in water you can still use full metal jacket but it gets a milky tone on the trap in the water.

I SUGGEST USING A 5 GALLON BUCKET OR A BIG ICE CREAM BUCKET TO DIP TRAPS IN YOUR DYE OR FULL METAL JACKET.I USED DAKOTA LINE DIP MY FIRST YEAR,BUT ITS MESSY AND I HAD TO DIP THEM 4 TIMES.PLUS IT COATS TRAPS TO WHERE THEY DONT WORK AS FREELY.IM NOT USEING A DIP WITH GAS EITHER.IM GOING TO USE FULL METAL JACKET.IVE HEARD TO MANY GOOD THINGS ABOUT IT NOT TOO AND ITS EASIER.PLUS YOUR TRAPS WORKS AS IF THERE IS NOTHING ON THEM AND AFFECTING PERFORMANCE.

So with the full metal jacket will you have to re-dip those after a catch? My current plan is to logwood then wax my traps and I'll just keep reheating my pot of wax and re-dip traps in that as my scent control. Is the pressure washer a good way of de-waxing a trap or do i need to boil them in something to clean them up and get ready for rewaxing or another dip in the full metal jacket if i was to go that route?
@coyotetrappingschool1575
@coyotetrappingschool1575 7 лет назад
With anything I would redip after a catch, not necessarily if I'm resetting that trap at the same location but once I pull the trap. Its got the catch scent on it and that is going to stand out if you put it anywhere else. I use a pressure washer for cleaning my traps but it doesn't always cut the wax, maybe on a hot day it might work better. I know a guy that uses a small cement mixer with sand and small stones to get the wax off his traps. The only issue with boiling them to get the wax off is them you got wax on the surface of the water and when you pull your traps out that wax is going to get right back on your trap. You could let it cool and the wax should harden on the surface then remove it

I just started trapping 2 years ago and am still a novice. My question is why not primer then paint then wax your traps? FYI on the first trap dye you used that's actually a watered down rust converter, and $25 is outrageously expensive when you can get a 1 gallon full concentrate rust converter for around $60 like Endall rust converter which would last you a few seasons.

You absolutely could primer/paint/wax your traps. Alot of people paint their water traps. Several of the dips are some sort of paint based dips, and just dipping them I haven't been super satisified with the coating that gets left on the trap, particularly with the water based dips. I would think you could just air out the painted traps a few weeks like you do with the gas dips then wax to seal in any odor. Nice catch on the rust converter. I've heard a little speculation as to what the FMJ is but never that and it makes perfect sense. I'll have to order some. You a metal worker?
@captaindd1971
@captaindd1971 6 лет назад
I worked offshore on boats for 20 years and salt water will rust metal boats very well. We used rust converter religiously on rusty metal. It works best if the metal is hot needs to be at least 90 yo 100 degrees covered in surface rust a full strength solution works best It doesn't work well on new metal. And if done correctly will turn rusty metal black.
@coyotetrappingschool1575
@coyotetrappingschool1575 6 лет назад
Interesting, so when it turns black can you get it off, or would you want to? I'm thinking about a pile of old traps I've got that are very rusty. I've been thinking about hitting them with vinegar and a wire brush but that just don't get me real excited. A gallon of this may do the trick
@captaindd1971
@captaindd1971 6 лет назад
Coyote Trapping School it will turn black is blue when you do the first coat and more black than blue after the second coat. Once it's cured and dried it will turn rusty metal black.

How do you get old wax off traps and do you dye or paint before you use full metal jacket... I am trying to save time and all my traps have old wax on them.. good video
@coyotetrappingschool1575
@coyotetrappingschool1575 7 лет назад
I don't sweat old wax too much, if you leave them in the heat/sun during summer some of that wax will come off but I just pressure wash or boil in dawn then treat them. This is my first time using full metal jacket and I tried it without doing any dye or paint. It may be useful just to minimize the shine of the trap should it get exposed though. If you're real worried about wax, I know a guy that throws his traps in a small cement mixer with sand and small rocks for 30 mins or so and it cleans them right up.

@jackriley5974

An old trappers perspective: If your going to bury your traps, why does the color matter? It doesn't! Also, the only logical reason to wax them is to prevent them from a quick rust-up. If you insist on doing both, do it in one motion, and throw the wax in with the dye. A hundred years ago real trappers (without 4 wheels) would hang their traps, rust and all, in a tree on their line for the off season. They never modified their traps. They never set pan tension with a special tool. They didn't use waxed dirt or antifreeze. They didn't leave anything behind when they pulled their traps.
