In this video we look at the equipment we need and a routine that we need to develop and be able to do consistently 25 times over 25 targets. We look at what to do to improve the efficiency of our second shot at the target. Visual hold and gun hold are revisited as are chokes and consistent gun mount. Types of shooting glasses and shooting vests are discussed.
We look at the importance of focus and concentration and a few other things in order to improve our scores. Thank You ROGER PACE

What a great tutorial. I am right handed, left eye dominant. I have been shooting with left eye closed for most of my life. I have recently started shooting both eyes open after a bungee cord took most of my vision from my right eye. After joining the summer fun trap league I have learned a new sight picture, and picking up the birds much faster, and a much slower move to the target. I thank you sir for the great advice. Shoot more, shoot more often.

I'm a fan of yours. You taught me the importance of gun fit. Use the straw you said. Keep both eyes open, something I have to keep telling myself to do. See the bird. shoot he bird, something I don't do. I let it go too far. I use the wrong choke. Improved Cyl and Modified. Maybe I should go back to bowling. lol That's not gonna happen. Even with the wrong chokes I am hitting the clays in practice and I might hit 10 in a row and then miss the next six. So, not to bore you, I have realized that I am losing my gun fit as I shoot. Thus for missing. OK Roger...the next time I go out and practice, I will concentrate on keeping the gun on my cheek and shooting the clay that seems to go so slow for my friends and so fast for me.

Absolutely Amazing video.!! I shot 50 clays with a borrowed gun. 23/25, 18/25. I was hooked ! The next week, I researched and bought a Browning Citori XT. I then had it fitted with a Gracoil stock. I then shot 25 clays. 21/25. The next week I shot 50 clays. 19/25, 18/25. Your video has pointed me in the right direction. SLOW DOWN ! Concentrate ! SEE THE BIRD< SHOOT THE BIRD ! I have only fired 225 clays. BUT, watching your video has given me the points to move forward. At age 67, I am not into competition. I am into having fun. Thank you for a VERY informative video. JJP

just getting back into clay shooting after about 9 years, gonna try everything you've included In this video roger. one thing I know I was doing that was screwing me up was looking at the bead. I still managed a 17 my first time back in so long though! P.S do you have any thoughts on berretta a300 semi autos?
@rogerpace9322
@rogerpace9322 8 лет назад
Bossco...good to hear from you...17 first time back is a great start and obviously you have the ability to build on that score...berettas are great and I have very strong feelings on semi autos for trap shooting...so here goes and i'll make some enemies from the trap shooting semi auto afficionados ...the advantage of a semi auto especially a gas operated one is that there is hardly any recoil...if you mainly shoot single barrel events then semis are fine but if you shoot a lot of double barrel events ...thats where i think semis fall down because if you only use one shot you must unload the gun before you move to the next station...and when it is your turn you have to reload...all that loading and reloading is distracting and takes your concentration off of what we are there to do ...and that is to break clays...as I have said all along...if semis were better ...then olympians would be using them...but they don't... they use over and unders...as far as the bereeta semi autos... one guy at the club uses it and he loves it and it is a very reliable gun...thank you for watching the video...stay well and happy shooting! PS Whatever you use ...get an adjustable stock!

Gun hold and visual hold, never look at that point too near to the house because you cant see the target clear, it makes a flash at that point because your eye cant see it clearly, so it creates the impression in the subconscious that the target is moving very quickly and thus one tends to snap the weapon instead of calmly grasping the target, we have to act, not to react to the target, we dominate the target not the taget us. I think one missing point is the exact definition of your chokes because you tell us 3/4 full but what is the exact diameter of the barrel of your gun ? Do you have overbored ones so maybe its 18.8mm or for example you use a barrel with 18,5mm diameter its completely other necessary choking needed. Sorry for using milimeters :-) so full choke reduces 0,850 mm but if your gun has 18,5 mm barrels its just really reducing too much

Besides being more traditional, what is the benefit of using a over/under over a semiautomatic? I can’t see any benefit only a disadvantage with having two completely different sight over bore. Does it basically just come down to reliability using target loads?
@rogerpace9322
@rogerpace9322 3 года назад
Nick...I think the main benefit is that with an O/U you do not have to take out the second cartridge ,if it is a double barrel event. the other reason is that the competition over and unders are beautifully balanced and swing really well...many people shoot really well with all types of guns ...not long ago really good scores were being shot with side by sides...brilliant question and i do not think I have done it justice...stay well and happy shooting !!!

Hi Roger. Question on gun mount. I’ve been told with trap that it’s better (and normal given higher stock dimensions) for trap guns to shoot high (I.E. see more rib so the gun shoots higher) to deal with the rising targets. You mention a much flatter sight plane (and resultant shot) in your video. Is this just more down to personal preference and the way you yourself prefer your sight picture to be? Or is there a much academic/practical reason? Love your content and delivery of videos! Cheers from a Saffer shooter in the UK
@rogerpace9322
@rogerpace9322 Год назад
I've got my gun set up so that it shoots a tiny bit high...i used to have it set up to shoot higher ...the way the gun is now set up i just shoot straight at the target...i have found that with the flatter shooting gun my second shot percentage is higher and on my second shot i shoot straight at the target... thanks for watching...much appreciated and stay well!!!

+traud1969 traud I would look at getting an over and under definitely... I own a beretta silver pigeon 1 sporter in 30" barrels that is a good all round gun and also good for skeet...for trap then get a dedicated trap gun they shoot higher i would look at a second hand beretta there are always guys who are looking to sell their gun at clay shooting clubs i am like you i started trap shooting 5 months ago and i have a 20 average it takes time to consistently shoot the high scores good luck and happy shooting

Thank you. Keeping it simple is great advice. Don’t overthink. Consistent correct mount, don’t look at gun, see bird, shoot bird, smoke puff.

Ive only been trap shooting once ( just got my licence) but shot 4 rounds and improved. I shot 7/25, 4/25, 14/22 and 17/24 ( only using 1 barrel ). Last 2 rounds we got ripped off a few clays lol

Great video! Very practical with everyday language. All the main topics are covered head-on and in a way which makes sense. The bit about being serious made me smile! I know what you mean. It’s so easy to faff around and not really concentrate. It takes a lot more stillness of mind than normal to shoot consistently well. I imagine that I’m focused when on the line, but friends tell me I’m fidgeting like crazy and completely inconsistent!

Thanks for this video. What was most helpful for me, was when you said. hold the gun so all you can see is the bead and not the flat of the barrel. That was a duaaa! moment for me. Before I could always see the top of the barrel. Thanks.

I'm 'freshman', joined the club this year, shot about 1500 rounds and can appreciate a concise, logical, to the point guidance. There is so many bloggers on the NET, and experts on the shooting range dispensing misleading and confusing information that can screw up you game leading to errors difficult to eradicate. I watched the newer clip about the usefulness of the middle bead in trap gun before, and it was part of the 'epiphany' I had about POA, POI, repeatable mount. That 'revelation' came after intelligent and knowledgeable comments like yours and using geometry, and made me understand that if a gun is fitted to the shooter who mastered a repeatable and solid mount, the beads are not necessary at ALL!. For the purity of that 'science' I'd love to shave them off, but as a practical man I'll keep them as I know my mount ma change overtime for different reasons. Thank you Mr. Pace and keep educating, would add some simple (geometrical) sketches to additionally illustrate your sage advise. p.s. Impressed by the honesty of your score graph :) Kaz

you really aught to do a video about scoring. I instinctively knew what you meant by a AA shooter, but defining the classification and tip on how to get into competition would be helpful

Hi Roger In trap when you say see the bird and shoot the bird, you do not account for lead? If you do ,do you have a constant lead or do you swing through
@rogerpace9322
@rogerpace9322 7 лет назад
Zafar...on the straightaway targets you really don't see any lead ...on the left and right crossing targets I apply lead and always try to stay in the gun and follow through.

AA shooters are freaks of nature. Usually your best teachers aren't the best shooters, but they know how it works better than the exceptional do. Thanks for being a great teacher!

Defo keep both eyes open when shooting a shot gun! Rifle one eye closed.
@judgeholden6761
@judgeholden6761 5 лет назад
Shotgun is probably an exception because you shoot intuitively and don't really "aim" but you will always be most accurate if you are carefully aiming any firearm with one eye open....if you shoot to train for self defense though, it is physically impossible to close one eye in a life or death struggle so train with both eyes open.

Helpful tips, and greetings from across the pond. I just started shooting trap, and already have a decent 11-87 semi, so I'll stick with it for the time being. Agree on your o/u preference, though, for a gun used specifically for trap. All the best!
