TRAPEZE Midnight Flyers - Complete Recordings Vol 2 (1974-1981) (5CD Box)
Purple Records / Cherry Red
Another box of amazing music from Cherry Red in their classic clamshell design, and this box continues nicely from the volume 1 of a few months back, adding more to the archive.

Thanks for another great review. I’ve got the 1st box and have preordered the 2nd, arriving on Friday. I’m so looking forward to hearing what, like you, will be new to me. My decision to preorder it is totally vindicated by your thoughts on the review. Can’t wait! Thanks again and take care. AJ. 🤘.

Hiya Phil. Jeez the goodies just keep coming. There are the three box sets of the albums you mentioned but now it seems the company FINALLY got their act together and made 2 affordable box sets. Vol 1 is on average USD $35 and vol. 2 since it's newer is USD $42. I like your acumen of the essay and how's it been copy and pasted, the packaging, and sound quality. It's always a plus. As always rock on, Nick

Wonderful boxes. So good that you can't listen to just one album at a time... Impossible not to listen to all of them in chronological order at once, and of course, repeat "You Are the Music... We're Just The Band".

Nice thumbwork Phil! Pete Goalby? I must check that podcast out now! His work with UH has been swept away it seems from the official history like Ripper and Tony Martin. Anyway great video and will check these out! Cheers!

I reckon by Hotwire they had found their identity. As great as the earlier albums were, it sounded like they were experimenting to find their direction... and you are so right about Mel, he was an extraordinary talent with a really unique sound and style. Also with Peter Wright and Dave Holland as the rhythm section plus some great guitar by Rob Kendrick, it was always going to be special. Pete Goalby was also a good fit with the band as they progressed. Still some of my all time favourite albums. May the Trapeze swing forever 🎸❤

Love Trapeze. I have a copy of the Medusa album on vinyl from 1971. Tempted to buy both of the box sets.

I love the Trapeze , Hot Wire and Hold On albums, Mel Galley handled the band so well after Glenn's departure. Really great guy too, glad that I got to know him before he left.

Thank you for sharing. This box set made me really appreciate Mel Galley more than I had done before. Sadly missed - Phil

Look on you tube to see if you can find out about the guy who was impersonating Mel, even signing autographs as Mel Galley and Mel got the chance to confront him face to face. There's a video of him telling the story , I'll send it to you if I can find it.

A band I was lucky enough to see in the 70’s at Ivanhoes, in Huddersfield.

Sure wish they would find a way to do this Grand Funk Railroad. All the old originals are the best and need to be heard!

All Trapeze albums (live in Dallas excluded as Dave didn't play that show) are strong recommendations for the Judas Priest fans who unfairly assess Dave Holland's ability and taste as a drummer. He is versatile, solid and tasteful at the same time. He is a perfect match for both Trapeze and Judas Priest, although in totally different ways. His simplistic approach was required by 80s Judas Priest to fit their musical direction during that particular era when the rhythem section was MEANT to be overshadowed by the vox and twin axe attack.

To my ears , " Hot Wire" was always the best Trapeze album in their catalogue .

I may well buy both the boxes, despite owning the bulk of material. I have a Trapeze compilation ‘On The High Wire’ which features Armadillos..Hold On,plus the Dallas’72/‘73. It would be nice if Cherry Red Records would say what sound restoration has taken place. I will be giving away my duplicates to friends who might enjoy them. The Arlington’76 would the the first out the box. I have heard songs from the show before on You Tube. Glenn has said of that ‘76 Tour of Texas, that he wasn’t at the top of his game and I suspect he wasn’t as grounded, after all the trappings of the Deep Purple machinery.Tony Parry,Trapeze’s manager said the other members of the band had talked about “ditching him”. Those ‘76 shows were billed as Galley,Holland & Hughes, so Mel and Dave had to get through the tour with Glenn. As you say,Phil, Mel Galley is Trapeze.

Unfortunately not all the labels that are under the Cherry Red umbrella cares about their products.
