Trapped robin lands on rescuers HEAD!

Rescuing animals on the move can be very difficult - especially when you are trying to find two tiny birds in a large office building!
A local business asked for our help recently when two adult robins became trapped in their office roof. The birds had been spotted above the roofing panels and kept flying into the room through a hole in the ceiling. They did not seem to be able to escape and so, nets in hand, Simon and helpers Mike, Naomi and artist Richard Symonds set off to rescue them.
Once the first robin was spotted, it was quickly diverted into a smaller room for an easier rescue. The second, however, was a little harder to find!

American Robins were given that common name because they have a red breast like European Robins. But actually, American Robins are a type of thrush.

@@terminalfrost3645 The European robins are also very aggressive towards other birds, especially other robins. European robins will also kill rival robins over territory. Robins are instinctively are drawn to humans and will always attempt to form a relationship with humans so that they can elicit free food. Scientists believe that robins co-habited with humans as far back as caveman days and have evolved so that we find them cute and appealing. In this way they gain the protection of an apex predator that doesn't see them as prey and can be manipulated to provide food and protection. It seems to have worked as they feature on 99% of European Christmas cards. Robins are always tame around humans. Robins will always attempt to nest as close as possible (or even inside) human habitation. I've once woken up to find a robin pipping at me, sat on top of my bedside clock radio demanding to be fed. He'd come into the kitchen and then flown around the house looking for somebody to feed him. Of course he was fed. Robins have total mind control over humans.

Thank you so much for what you do, but also for these videos! At the park recently I found a tiny lost gosling all alone and being harassed by a crow, and having watched your videos definitely gave me a lot more confidence to help! I scooped it up into my scarf (all I had), gently wrapped it, and held it to my chest. I looked around a while with no luck and was getting ready to take it to a wildlife rehab (we have a few, but they don't do rescues) when someone told me she'd seen a canada goose family earlier that day. She helped me look, and eventually we found them! 6-7 adults on a grassy bank with about 12 babies! I eased up as close as they seemed comfortable with, set my gosling down...and it scampered off to rejoin its family! What an incredible feeling! I cried (obviously). So I think that little gosling thanks you too! ;)

a tip in bird navigating: birds don't see well in the dark so just like insects, birds will fly to the light. if you want a bird to fly out of the room to another room or through the window, block all light sources that are not coming from the opening you need the bird to go through.

Did they come in to try and get some bird food lol? I've started feeding pigeons in my local city centre. One time a pigeon saw me going into Poundland to buy some bird seed and it followed me in. If this will ever help - During catching birds in buildings,is good to turn off most of the lights and leave one by wall or window (depending on circumstances) Birds will always fallow light . Then "chasing area" is reduced to really small place . I'm bird breeder ,this always work when I catch birds for sale etc. Quick and easy way to catch bird and reducing the stress. But never turn off light completely.
@liliaaaaaaaa

It's possible these 2 were a pair looking to make a nest, the male and female look the same. They probably thought they'd be safe inside the council offices to become the new office pets. Hope they found each other again after their release. I've been feeding my local birds recently over the winter months. I went for a walk the other day with some bird food in my pocket. A robin jumped out of a bush to say hi to me as I was walking around. I stopped sat down and put some seeds down for him and he came right up to me and sat next to me to eat only a foot away. I didn't move to just let him be but he sat with me and ate for a while before flying back to his bush. They can be quite bold and friendly and sweet to humans. I've never seen them attacking each other though and hope never to see it. I guess it all depends on territory. 🙏

4:50 Exactly. In the 1990s, I worked for a company with a VERY high ceiling--literally. A small bird (a blue jay?) flew in on the day work was closing shop for the Easter holiday. Everyone would be gone for about a week--and NO ONE wanted to deal with the little bird, who would be trapped in the building, and die of either hunger or thirst. (The office was used as a location on the first 'BEETHOVEN' movie, about the goofy St. Bernard doggo--which would give you some idea of the scope of the space we were dealing with.) No one cared, except Yours Truly Unruly. The CEOS gave me permission to close up shop, as they didn't want to stick around and do anything about it. I ended up asking a gent who worked on maintenance for the property. It was WAY past quittin' time, but with his help, we managed to escort the bird out of the building, and into the Great Wide Open. Could TOTALLY relate to this video.

this made me giggle 😄 ...the funny thing is we had a sparrow come in our house earlier...two were fighting and one flew out when it realised it was flying into our landing window but the other flew into my bedroom lol poor thing sat on my slipper confused ...I tried to get up off my bed slowly but it flew into our bathroom... I said to my brother before I went to get up... "there's a bird in my bedroom and I'm not joking...please put Tom away" (Tom being our german shepherd lol) we then had the fun of trying to catch it and release it out the front lol...we shut each door til it was on the landing...I stood on the stairs as my brother ushered it out his room and it flew at me lol ...I ducked and sat on the stairs...next thing I hear my brother saying it was by my foot....I look down and there it was... I covered it over with a tea towel and my brother released it... never had this happen before ...funny that this came up today after our bird adventure 😆

You don't need nets. Take a stick long enough to reach corners and gently poke him to keep him flying. Flying slowly takes enormous amounts of energy and he'll tire and land to rest long enough to just pick him up. Works best in a room that isn't big enough for him to fly fast. Flying fast takes very little energy by comparison. Principle of induced drag.

@liliaaaaaaaa
@liliaaaaaaaa 3 года назад
Yes I think it's possible they were a pair hoping to make a nice cosy nest with 5 star ⭐ service from the humans. I had some pigeons fly in my spare room window one time. I left the window open over the summer months (I live on the 13th floor of a highrise, so my only intruders are of the flying kind..). I prepared an area for them covering the bed with plastic sheeting and put an old washable cat blanket down for them and cleared space on the top shelf of the cabinet for thrlem so they knew where they could sit. They made a nest and laid some eggs and would take turns one flying off at a time while the other sat on the nest. They were very well behaved. The eggs failed in the end then they flew off after a while. It was a nice experience but clearing bird poo up is another thing lol.
