My grandpa had the same problem a few years ago and did just that... let's just say, he missed many times and ended up with several holes in his wall and ceiling and to make matters worse, he never go it. I was there and terrified.

Sounds like mice, we get field mice in our house in colder months. They get into the walls through holes that were drilled for plumbing or electrical, usually from the basement or crawl space. They can chew their way in from even a tiny little hole, sometimes damaging electrical wires in the process. Set up mouse traps in the basement or crawl space under the house? Or get a couple of farm/barn cats?
