Richardson Gustave works for an unusual project called "The Plastic Bank," which wants to protect the environment and help people escape poverty.
Plastic waste is a growing problem worldwide. The oceans are awash in garbage, causing the deaths of marine animals. Traces of plastics are turning up in our bloodstreams, too. The problems created by plastic waste are especially visible in Haiti. Many people here live in poverty and amid plastic waste. "The Plastic Bank" pays people to collect waste in order to reduce pollution and poverty. The waste is then sold for recycling. Richardson Gustave set up the project to help rebuild his country that was devastated by hurricanes in 2008. It's not easy to implement it in reality. Its one of those things that sounds simple enough until you realize the massive amount of capitol to do such a thing to scale and how much cooperation you'd need with a government that isn't corrupt and inept

Seriously this country has been an independent country since 1809 but somehow in all that time they have not managed to organize a trash collection service. The most basic function of government.

Dave you absolutely right, we've been independent since 1804 and we lack the most basic government functions and infrastructures. Rest assure the will is there and alive within the people but the mean is being suppressed one way or another. Little by little with the willingness of people like Gustave we will get somewhere, we just need to rely less on our government and foreign governments.

Everyone expects someone to do it for them. Quit throwing your trash on the ground. Clean up after yourself. Quit waiting on government to do everything for you. That's the problem. Everyone thinking "why isn't government cleaning up this mess I'm making"

I am glad the clean up of plastic is creating jobs here and bring people out of poverty. Hopefully more recycling companies can go here in the future and factories to turn them into products to be exported creating more jobs. I think it will help a lot if some American companies move a few of their factories from Ashia to Haiti and try to fix infrastructure. The factories can be powered though waste to power plants for the clean up as well. Then we also need to put reforestation efforts also.

A wide variety of things can be done to reduce plastic wastage. Plastic manufacturers will continue to supply plastic while the demand for it remains. Every time we buy food that is wrapped in plastic packaging, (fruit and vegetables for example) we contribute to the demand for that particular type of plastic. We can reduce the demand if we choose to buy loose fruit and vegetables. Independent fruit and veg stores don't use a large amount of plastic. Most of all their fruit and vegetables are sold loose. Another thing we can do to reduce demand on plastic is to buy milk in glass bottles. I buy milk in glass bottles from a local milk delivery company. The price is higher but it's very convenient to have milk and other groceries delivered to your door.

I love this channel DW. Germans make awesome unbiased documentary unlike the United States of America which is all lies. I hope Haiti gets clean up and very rich. They should copy the Dominican Republic we are not perfect but mostly clean somewhat stable with a growing economy. They should not be ashamed of collecting trash is honorable job cleaning I salute them.

People keep blaming Haiti’s poverty on its 21 billion dollar 💵 independence debt which was paid of in 1947 the poverty in Haiti today has only sprung up recently who’s fault is this? Billions of dollars has been pumped into Haiti 🇭🇹 at this point they have no one but themselves to blame, even in France was to pay the reparations to Haiti 🇭🇹 it would go into the hands of the government and be looted the country is a lost cause.

quest 77036 those things are too expensive and would take the solution to the problem out of the people's hands. Charity doesn't work but giving people the ability to help themselves is the solution to the problem. In the west we are too used to someone else dealing with our issues and have the infrastructure to do it. Those men who didn't want to be filmed show that the Haitians are sad that their country is a mess and are working as best they can to save themselves. Perhaps there is something that you can do that would give them that power?

Hi DW, as a suggestion, you could also make a video about theorigins and consequences of racism. Its a very current theme that nobody really explains it in the bigger picture or in a global scale. Its talked about and its divisive but we keep seeing these fights on social media comments but little explanation from the media about how it works, its origins and the impact. What is true and what is not. You guys make great videos and I think this is a topic that we need to talk about in the political climate we currently are.

Only way to solve this is to stop using plastic
@louisdjemyarnoldgalette6482
@louisdjemyarnoldgalette6482 3 года назад
The solution its not "DO NOT USE PLASTIC". As you know it plastic is a global production and industry. So thinking about how to manage plastic is the best way to get income plastic flow. Lookup the plastic as an opportunity to create something new not as a waste. Everything invented by human, can be transferred in an other product or project.
@kerryswier4173

True, but conversion has an energy cost, also. So, great reduction of one-time or little use is necessary.

Even if no plastic comes into Haiti, there will still be somewhat of a plastic problem. Just look at Henderson Island which is uninhabited and 70 miles away from any inhabited place Island and is in the middle of the South pacific. Its beaches are covered in plastic that floats in across the ocean.

It starts with real elites who live above Petionville and just gets worse going down. It's good to see a positive story about the commercial sector working in Haiti, commerce is not the enemy. There is no left or right in Haiti, just look at how both Aristide or Preval failed to reform the land registry (even after the earthquake) - the one measure that only Haitians could change and one which would have benefited the Haitian people much more than the UN agencies and their employees and most of the NGO's. Haiti can do much better than what is seen today, there's ample evidence on the other side of the island. The narrator should pronounce of Port-au-Prince in English.

And the Elites there love it. The government is practically their play ground making all the rules. The Haitian Americans been caught on to this but our questions is why go back and help when our own people will carry hits on us made from those same elites. Pretty sure the people can’t overthrow the Elites regime since it’s backed by the US and UN claiming they want stability which in code is to steal resources while the country is fcked all over.
