Another brilliant restoration, I collected up a HST rake of my own in Swallow livery so it can go with my police livery Class 37 but I've stuck buffers and metal wheels on all the coaches so they can double as loco hauled stock - not accurate at all but doesn't matter, I really enjoy watching these restorations

The component you refer to as a capacitor is actually a diode. a diode allows the electricity to flow in one direction only, in this circuit it provides the directional lighting. Without the diode the head lights will work in both directions. Instead of the 'grain of wheat' bulb try fitting a white light emitting diode (led) with suitable resistor to limit the current flow, an led will have a longer life span than a bulb can give brighter light at lower voltages and does not get hot. If you take this one stage further you can also fit a red led and resistor in the opposite polarity to the white one and achieve red tail lights and white headlights at both ends which change with direction of travel.

Excellent video Dan, great to see these models getting a new lease of life, I recently did my HST and replaced the Ringfield with a cd motor, but I am not 100% happy with it and am planning fully servicing the Ringfield and using your video for guidance reinstating it.

I've always liked the HSTs, whether Hornby or Lima. And in giving it a new lease of life your also preventing yet more plastic going to landfill :) I also didn't know the window panels of those HST coaches came off so easily....I'm off to try removing mine now...just can't resist trying that! :)

There is a quick trick to fixing 90% of running problems with this sort of hornby loco, just with wheel cleaning and a drop of light oil on the axles. This is because dry axles cause corrosion against the die-cast chassis. The oil helps clean and prevents it returning. I think I'll pass on using baby wipes after seeing the paint removal. I guess they contain some alcohol.

Just a comment to *like*. NIce to see the face behind the voice. I dont need to win buddy - have a blue/great and Executive sets from my youth, and now Ive come back to the hobby after many years, Ive decided my time period is 1960s steam/diesel changeover period so they now dont quite fit in anymore

Thanks @Dan's model railways for another first-class sympathetic revival of an unloved old model, hoping it gets relocated to a deserving MTMD. I'm sure your little apprentice will come to appreciate all the practical skills you are passing on to him, It was only later in my life that I fully realized how valuable the teaching of my father and grandfather were, when I was a child helping make things, whether it was in the shed, on the kitchen table or at the building site. Knowing how to fix things might become a rare gift as manufacturing becomes more automated and globalised. Nice to see the face that goes with the hands we've seen so much of! I've already bought my shares in the cotton-buds factory, so thanks for that hot investment tip!

Its mainly from experience. I’ve been repairing trains for 20 years. I do sometimes have to refer to service sheets, especially if its something i’ve not seen before.
