Welcome! Today's trash to treasure project cost me almost nothing at all! The desk was gifted to me from a friend, the paint was leftover from a project I did for my mom and the other materials I only used a tiny fraction of. If I had to guess a total cost it would be around $5. This desk was made in the late 50's or early 60's and has a huge surprise detail hidden under all of that destroyed finish.

This is one of those pieces that cause those of us restoration enthusiasts to ooooooohh and aaahhhhh. I love it. It's almost like treating history with respect. It's beautiful and will be treasured for years to come.

I have a piano secretary desk that is from the late 1890's to the early 1900's. Owners were my great aunt, my grandmother, and then my mothers. I've had it since 1973 and I'm 71 at this time. It is black and gorgeous! But has a huge water stain on the pullout part inside the desk. I haven't attempted anything on it, am rather afraid to. So many beautiful scrolls and intricate details on the desk! But I've been trying chalk paint and such for the past couple of years and now am thinking it's time to attempt this. I believe it is mahogany. Oh boy! Thanks for sharing your video.

Amazing to find such a secret beneath the grime. I would never have dared use black but it’s really nice, it makes the top really shine. Thank you for the inspiration and great information.

Thank you! There is a time and place for black paint, and this was one of those times and places :) black works well to hide imperfections. In the art world black makes things disappear into the background. That is why i chose black for this project. The drawers were in rough shape and black helps camouflage their imperfections

Very good point about the black hiding defects, thank you for explaining this. We are moving across the country so selling most of our stuff- I will have to start over again with the thrifted treasures, RU-vid suggested your video and it was perfect timing..also, nice job hinting at the surprise great ending without showing it until the end, you mad me very curious :-)

I got an old coffee table that was painted black. So one day I sanded it off and underneath was a beautiful inlay and the grain was laid out in a really cool pattern. I couldn’t believe it. ♥️👍 That inlay on that desk is something to be appreciated for sure.

So glad I found this! I have almost an identical desk that was my great grandmothers who lived to be 110. She’s been passed for about 15 to 20 years now. I’ve been wanting to redo it for years but have never done one. I may have to do some wood filler too. I can’t wait to finish watching this

I have a desk nearly the same style that belonged to my parents. I believe late 40’s or ‘50’s. The body is all the same but no pretty design on the desktop, but does have a pie crust edge. I had it refinished the same, body black with top stained. I had a piece of glass cut for the top to make sure it stays nice. Love how yours turned out...mine too! 🥰👍

What an awesome coincidence! This body style was very popular in the 40s and 50s thats for sure. I couldn't believe the inlay I found on this one. It was a first for me! I had refinished a waterfall front version of this desk style a while ago. They are a fairly common shaped desk but all special in their own ways. Great idea with the glass!

I used a piece of clear acrylic veneer for the top. You know if I drop something on it or else plus it's way cheaper

W O W!! She is GORGEOUS!! The surprise inlay is just stunning and you are correct re red heart wood, it is a rare breed found in mostly South America (it can be found in some parts of Central America too, but mostly SA). My husband buys exotic woods (from a place that sells bundles on sale) and has bought some before. Anyway, amazing transformation, Cory!💜

I have one similar to this but I did chalk white and gold handles! I’ve been wanting to sand the top to reveal the natural wood, and go over the body with a white gloss but I love this with the black. ❤️

Yes I think you have the right time line. My Grsndma got a new sewing desk in the early 60s. It looks just the same as hers.

That inlay is purple heart wood, found in Guyana and South America. It is pretty but an expensive hardwood. Definitely a beautifully crafted piece. ❤️

@Desert DIY It's been around my whole life and I'm 43, and I think for mom's too and she's 62. The drawers on his are a bit different in the sizes but its the same overall. I can't wait to show her this! 😆

I have a tip for you : When you are sanding a curve, such as on the edge of the table top, where it has an inside curve. Use a piece of round pole or dowel rod, anything small and cylindrical, and wrap your sandpaper around it. It will save your fingers, and ensure you get into all the curve, all at the same time. It will also take less effort and save time. I only do the occasional revamp - not like you who does it as a full time occupation. I have a collection of different shaped pieces of wood in triangles, rounds, balls, cylinders etc. all different sizes and angles. I keep them out of the way on a shelf in a small, lidded, wooden box, that doesn't take up space, but when I do use them it makes things oh so much easier and my fingers thank me for not removing layer after layer of skin each time ! I hope this helps you in some way.
