I am old and wear a helmet. I don’t care what anyone thinks about it. I’ve hit my head so hard before and was so grateful I had on the damn helmet. My car always has first aid kits, water, and extra helmets if I can swing it cuz I’m usually one of a handful of adults and I’ve already had to help multiple kids with injuries who have no adults with them (including head injuries). Injuries are inevitable, what we can do is build up community around our local scenes so we can take care of each other when we need to. So glad y’all were there to help out.

I've had a friend die longboarding when I was 16. Dude was bombing a hill in north carolina going like 90km/h through a blind hairpin turn and some pickup truck coming the other way slid too wide out of his lane and hit my friend. Guy was like 28 with a dope career, a super loving family and tons of friends. He was always smiling hella wide and always so psyched to skateboard and in an instant his life was over. His father still writes on his facebook wall every few months. The Montreal racing community really simmered out after that. It's sad. Another friend had a traumatic head injury skating a bowl a couple years ago. To this day she's still not the same. Life is fragile folks, savour it and take care. Also like just don't be a dick to people wearing pads or feeling sketched out about trying a trick, there's nothing cool about that. One love
@postmodernerkindergartner960
i do recall all those downhill longboard stuff popping up on youtube, most of the situations were quite uncontrollable, can be compared to those stupid moments when skateboarders ending their line bombing down a street with cars and shit. i always hate that, it can very likely create stories like yours.
@Basuko_Smoker
@Basuko_Smoker Год назад
@@postmodernerkindergartner960 yup, i second this as i'm like, how tf are you not scared (besides all of the traffic) of stuff like pebbles and animals. Been back at skating 4 months at 34. Smashed my head three times on pretty random falls, last time was gnarly. I could not be more thankful for wearing a helmet all the time. Also thankful that a skate buddy stayed with me to talk afterwards to make sure I was good. I am wearing full protection gear and am very conscious that this is actually what makes me able to enjoy skating again at 34.

I want to get back to skating pretty bad since I started watching these videos. I'm 37, and sole provider for my family. Man what makes me really hesitant is that accidents at older ages are just worse and there's more on the line. It would suck to get hurt and have to miss work with all the pressures of a family. If I do get back into it I'll probably get a helmet, elbow and knee guards for sure. Maybe even something for my hands since I work with my hands all day. My brother is like "get back into it but only to ride" but man....I want to skate skate haha.
@valentindb

@@pheinted6386 Hey mate! Get hand protection too for sure, I even got undershorts with padding for the hips. One advice I could give if you also had a long skating hiatus is to get comfy rolling around and ollying stuff. I was more of a street skater and I am now skating parks. If I had the patience to get myself comfortable riding around the smooth ground, getting a feel for transition and banks, before trying to get tricks in I would surely have avoided some of those bails. It's hard to set limits and to stick to it while in the heat of a session! You also have to make peace with the fact that you're going to give up on the style points with all the gear ahah But I found out that skating in the summer heat bare chest with the protective gear and a t-shirt tucked in the helmet gives you the "Vintage bowl guy" style which I like even though I'm mostly doing grinds and manuals 😅 Wish you all the best

It's definitely never lame! Andy Anderson and JD Sanchez are prime examples of how not lame it is to wear skate helmets, even when street skating. I'm older, 53. I never wore a helmet street skating 84 - 2000's. When I first went to a skatepark in 2016, I bought a helmet before I actually skated there. 3 months later, I fractured my pelvis & split the helmet. A week in the hospital, and 6mo out of work. If I just cruised now, a helmet wouldn't be as high on my priority list. Though I go hard for tricks, and wear full pads most of the time. Kids look at me sideways, until they see what I'm about. Sad for the kid, thrilled that you all were able to step up when needed. Add Narcan training to the list, too. It's typically free training & definitely would save a life.

I've seen people fall and hit their head, and stay down. Really terrifying, and it happens fast. Afterwards they still talk slower than before the injury. Head injuries never fully heal. So for me it's never a question, I always wear at least a helmet. Pads can help too, so I don't need to end a session early.

I very much agree. The stigma that protection while skateboarding is lame is really cringe and needs to stop. This generation needs to be the generation that makes skateboarding with a helmet and other protection acceptable and it should have a general acceptance similar to using deck rails and risers. It shouldn't matter what anyone else is doing or wearing. Skateboarding is an open and diverse and accepting sport and the open mindedness needs to keep progressing positively.

Glad it was none of you guys that got hurt but sucks for the kid. I have seizures myself so I fully know how he was feeling. Best thing you can do other than make sure he doesn't hurt himself is be accepting of the situation and understanding of it. I used to feel so down when I snapped right out of one and folks all looked worried but i felt totally fine, granted I wasn't always having them after hitting my head. Skating has helped me a lot with keeping the seizures to a minimum recently though, as for me it was very much my mental well-being not being on-point and having the focus of skating back in my life has not only helped me get stronger (and overcome some spine injury shit I'd been dealing with for years) but have a whole new outlook on life. Watching these videos over the last 6 months has been the absolute kick up the arse I needed to get my shit together, so hearing that you dealt with this sort of situation in such an admirable way (despite it shocking ya'll) really just reinforces my faith in you and the gang. Keep doing dope shit, keep inspiring and keep looking after one another! Apologies for the book.

A few months before I started skating I saw a young kid smash his head on a hill bomb. He had an intense seizure and was unconscious and bleeding from the back of his head. Same thing he had to be held gently so he didn't repeat bashing his already split open head on the cement. It was pretty brutal I saw his friends a while later and they were all pretty upset. I guess he hadn't been able to speak for several days eventually though I saw him working at the coffee shop (tim horton's) again speaking and fully healed. Definitely glad he was OK and dealing with that definitely stuck with me. But also glad we saw it and got over there with a sanitary towel and called the ambulance for the kids.

I experience what is technically called “pseudo seizures” from a condition called cardio-neurogenic syncope. This kid’s episode sounds a bit like what I go through on occasion, though I’ve never had any bleeding associated with my episodes. Cardio-neurogenic syncope, or Vasovagal syncope, happens when your blood pressure and heart rate drop suddenly, causing you to pass out, and often convulse, as blood flow to the brain is nearly stopped. Vasovagal syncope is a common type of reflex syncope, which happens in response to a traumatic event like getting hurting, or seeing something gnarly or even being overstimulated or stressed. Dan did what I would have wanted if I was having an episode, move me away from more harm and then give me space to flop around. The feeling of having one of these episodes/seizures is one I can only describe as what it must be like when you are dying, its like all my nerves are firing but I can’t feel anything specific and only a sliver of my consciousness remains to experience the last moments of life. I can kind of make out sounds but can’t see and my entire body feel is like it’s being crushed. When someone restrains me the feeling is like being held down by an evil void. It’s a scary thing to live through and live with but it can be managed. It has happened to me at the skatepark. A board hit my shin, which already had a gnarly shinner, right on top of the old injury… I knew “it” was coming and sat down Immediately. Just as I was starting to lose it, I made eye contact with a kid skating by. I was able tell him not to freak and please don’t call an ambulance just in time to start seizing on the grass in front of him. I woke up, assured all the kids that had gathered that the old man was ok (I’m 37). I waited bout 30mis and drove home. I’m glad it all worked out ok it seems. You did good Dan. Ps: If you have footage of the actual seizure it would be super helpful to the doctors in making a correct diagnosis. If you can find the kid and give him if any footage you have it might really help him figure this out.

I never knew the name of this. I believe these use to happen to me, I don’t know why they stopped. but they were awful. I always chalked it up to be my poor diet/lack of food lack of iron. It was always triggered by my anxiety (even reading about medical stuff would send me down) When this happened to you, would get extremely hot and sweaty? and then when it’s over you’re like shivering? I think even one time as I was falling to my knees the sound around me sounded slow motion. Weird stuff

yeah that hit home because i just broke my wrist a week ago ( just bought a new board after 3 years without skate due to ankle injury, 5 min later glass shard got stuck in my wheel and you know the result). So yeah, protection would have help. now i can't work, i can't do sport, i can't do music ( my main activity/side job), i can't play video game. the only thing that i can do is reading/watching tv. that really really suck and my summer is basically ruined. man in 10+ years of skating i never injured myself once. now i'm 25 years old and i have injured myself pretty badly each years since i pass 22 years old. tldr : wear protection kids.

I'm older and I ride eboards and onewheel. I still ride sometimes my regular longboard. I have never gone out without a helmet. The head is fragile. Once a serious injury happens to the head, there is no turning back. You're done, toast. You could end up being spoon fed the rest of your life. Andy Anderson always wears a helmet. He's super good at skating. If pride is why one doesn't wear one then stupid is stupid does.

Having come from BMX dirt jumps/Freeride MTB, I've never found it an issue wearing protective gear. Honestly it blows my mind how few Skaters are willing to wear any kind of protection. Sure you may feel you look like a bit of a goof, just at the end of the day would you rather look like a doofus or suffer brain damage (potentially destroying your ability to ever skate again). I've unfortunately witnessed enough broken bones and fractured skulls to last anyone a life time. Thankfully I've had the opportunity to be medically trained (to an extent) and I cannot recommend it enough to ANYONE who dabbles in skating/biking etc. You acted flawlessly and did exactly what was needed in that situation, even if you don't have the medical training just being there and keeping a cool head controls the situation and allows the medical professionals to do their jobs far smoother once on scene. You sir deserve way more subs and to be recognised for being such a LEGEND. Massive respect for looking after that lad and his friends. You potentially saved him from further catastrophic damage and I will be willing to bet have given that group of friends the confidence to be able to act in a similar way if they ever encounter a situation like that again. THIS is why you're one of my favourite Skaters/Tubers. Much love and respect from the UK

When I skated as a kid nobody wore helmets. When I started. skating again last year as a 40 yr old, I promised my wife I'd wear a helmet. Now you won't catch me without a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards. It felt so weird and constricting initially, but now I feel naked without them. Because I'm so padded up, it's given me the confidence to start skating bigger transitions and even vert. Stoked that at 40 I'm better than I ever was when I was younger and I've avoided some gnarly injuries. I feel like someone who is going to give you a hard time for wearing a helmet would have probably found something else to bother you about even if you weren't wearing one. If someone is giving you a hard time about protective gear, just do a sweet backside air over them to shut them up ha ha.

Had a buddy fall off my board when I was probably 18. He cracked the back of his skull and lost his sense of smell from it. He was in the hospital for nearly 6 months and still gets migraines pretty bad ever since. We're incredibly lucky it wasn't anything more than that but still. I sketch out when people ask to use my board now ever since and I'm 27 now so 9 years since. Head injuries are no joke. The brain is a super complex organ. Keep it safe. I need to get a helmet. On a side note: I love how cool Andy Anderson makes wearing a helmet look. Need more skaters who proudly wear and promote the use of helmets in the sport. 🤙🤙🤙

The base line protec helmets are really slim. Of course they offere minimal protection tho. Imo even a light weight non rated helmet will make a difference. And they are easy to wear. Once I started decorating mine I started loving it. You would look hilarious wearing one of Andy’s fancy painted helmets. Lol in the best way of course

Last thursday at work, my co worker had a seizure. Luckily he told me he was seizure prone a few months prior, and i did research on what to do when someone had a seizure. Needless to say, i stepped up and did what needed to be done to keep him safe and make sure he didn't stop breathing. It is genuinely scary when it just happens out of nowhere. Life is precious man. I think helmets should be mandatory at parks honestly but thats just my opinion.

You obviously did this but I just want to emphasize the number one thing in a situation like that … dial 911 immediately. Having CPR and other training is a great plus, but the first step in CPR is also to dial 911. The sooner the ambulance arrives the better, especially with head injuries.

I started skating seriously again after a ten year break and I have so much trouble with confidence now when I'm a bit older (33yo). I bought a helmet to use when I'm trying something new and scary and it really helped me to push a bit harder. I quickly just got used to having it on so now I just have it on me most of the time. I do have a pre-existing brain injury and I know people who also have. You don't want that shit.

Yeah... A lot of people just don't tuck and roll too well... I had my breakfalls taught by some good teachers and am not one of those people, but I still have a helmet and will wear one if I am skating transition. It could happen to anyone, and it's definitely no joke. In some cases, you might end up surviving an injury, but thinking you might have been better off not surviving it.

I wouldn't wear a lid when I was younger for that reason, I felt stupid and everyone hated on it! I'm 35 and now I do skate with a helmet for the simple reason- there's nothing 'cool' about brain damage and we only get one chance in those situations...lucky you n the crew were there to help keep the kid safe till the EMTs got there, nothing more frightening than full blown seizures

Its only surprising we don't get more life changing injuries at skateparks. Ply wood with hard wheels on concrete with steel edges and corners everywhere. It's a frickin miracle tbh. Everyone really should wear helmets and skate manufacturers should spend some money designing cool lightweight accessible safety gear.
