This isn’t really an item but what I like to do is put glow in the dark tape on my most important items so that they’re within easy access at night; in low light situations; when I don’t have access to a torch etc.
I like to watch your video but most of the travel gear applies to men travelers. But love the travel tips as a lady traveler love to buy souvenirs so I always bring a foldable bag so convenient I used to buy grocery in other countries because I'm gluten intolerant. 2nd item I copy from you guys is carabiners with lock. I used carabiners as my backpack lock which save my bag from pickpocketers in market. Also I used to my hairties get organized. 3rd my wallet has led small flashlight used for emergency happened when the electricity goes out were able to used the stairs going down. 4th my ballpen has scothtape and electrical wrap around it I used for emergency too. When my charger wire was caught in the edge of the table, it almost tear up but I had an electrical tape around I was able to fix my cellphone charger wire. My husband was shocked where did I get an electrical tape. I said I bring it along with me. What? I said, I'm a girl's scout I'm always prepared and ready. Even big plastic bags I bring it I lined it inside my carry-on as back up for my dirty and wet clothes or grocery use.
A small flashlight, especially one with a very low power setting. Handy for finding things you drop on the plane, without bothering everyone around you. Like the multi tool, you don’t realize how much you will use it until you have one in your pocket.
@@sogregarious It is hard to beat the Streamlight microstream. There is a AAA version, and a USB rechargeable version, although it’s “low“ output of 50 lumens is a little brighter than I would like for a low setting. I like some of the mid range Olight flashlights, because they have a “moonlight“ mode which ranges anywhere between 1 and 5 lumens, bright enough to find something that you have dropped, but dim enough to not startle everybody around you
Great suggestions here as usual. I love the Bellroy wallet! For tiny, ultralight, cheap and disposable, I use a P38 can opener as my multitool of choice. Limited usability but good enough if you sharpen the edge. No TSA or other hassles in 20+ years of travel. Also like to bring a small black microfiber cloth for cleaning eyeglasses, drying hands in bathrooms, wiping sweat, spills etc. Hangs on a carabiner to dry. Keep the great ideas coming because I’m hitting the road again, soon.
The heroclip is definitely something I don't leave my house without when I'm using a backpack or bag, it's so handy when you need to use a public restroom
Ever since I decided to cut down on my clutter I've always been on the look out for better gear to replacement the pieces that wear out. These videos have literally done me wonders and I don't know where I would be without them. Topo Designs has been a personal favorite of mine, but I've also grabbed things from Peak Design and Tom Bihn. Also, great hair, Tom.
I love the options for each item. I like my RovyVon A5 flashlight. It's the size of a pinkie, but super bright, and the sidelights are a good lantern. The red light won't affect night vision. I also take a power strip. I often room with multiple people who have multiple devices to plug in, so my power strip limits my outlet use to 1, and others can plug into it as well. Now that I don't have to take care of my mom, I look forward to my 3 trips this year.
this right here. i bought an outlet doubler. basicly is a regular us plug that had a plug on the back side and a short 6 inch extension that allows another plug. turns 1 outlet into 2. on my trip to viet nam i used one of those ungrounded plug adapters at one hotel because the plugs were too deep and didnt allow the ground plug. there was a time i really could have used a small 3 outlet strip.
I love your videos! I´m a fulltime traveller since 2018 and I say YES to all of those products. I think the merino Buff was missing. I used this so many times while travelling sometimes even as a little towel.
Aw, you missed the best one: the Flipside wallet. I’ve found that it wins in any contest for the fastest access to the cards you want. It won’t win any points for beauty, but it’s amazing for functionality- especially with accessories that expand its capabilities to hold even more of your stuff.
It's essential to bring with you a packable bag so that you can leave your backpack at the place you're staying at but it doesn't bother you while you're travelling
i use a packable sling, not a hip type an actual sling. its light, has enough room for a bottle my cellphone a point and shoot camera some extra batteries and a place for my wallet. oh and my packable bag for things i might pick up and not fit in my sling.
I always keep a packet of wet wipes, as it is super useful in many situations. Also a neatly folded regular plastic bag for unexpected shopping, garbage separation, etc.
The fresh wipe brand are biodegradable, anti bacterial and have both whole body and 1/2 size wipe options. I have used one of the mini wipes for a full body wipe down
The heroclip has saved my expensive Tom Bihn bag from bathroom floors more times than I can count. It's alarming how often the coat hook is broken and I need to hook the bag over the bathroom door!
said it above,. i pack a 2 prong to 3 us adapter for those places that dont have a ground plug. seems all the other adapters also wouldnt fit the socket tight enough and would droop. this let them be tight up and i could put something below it to keep it in the socket if needed
I'm about to take a trip to Mexico and I'm not new to travel but, it's not something I do frequently. Your videos have been a great source of knowledge and tips.
On travels and trips I carry always a (original) pashmina shawl with me. Don't use pullovers/downjackets/hoodies etc. just my t-shirt and if required the shawl on top, good enough to cover three seasons (and I don't go into winter/snow if I can avoid 🤣).
The Shrade Shark is a fantastic little multi tool . Perfect for cleaning from under your finger nails and opens your cans & bottles incredibly well. Plus the screw drivers& prybar work better than you think for such a little tool .plus you can take it anywhere..and will literally last a lifetime of seriously hard use . I own 3 and love them
Backcountry is such a great site to do business with. Their staff are above and beyond. Is that your warehouse at 7:52? Geeeesh... that's a lot of gear! I thought the wall-o-bags was impressive! Hope you all are well!
@@PackHacker That's pretty awesome, your organizational skills transcend the studio to the warehouse! You oughta have an online retail space with drop shipping rather than just affiliates. I'm sure you've considered that in your business model. You've got such a great collection of bags and gear and so many assets already from YT :) Nice work Tom! Have a great day!
instead of spending a ton of money on gear pouches home depot lowes walmart and even target has flat pouches often times in 3 pack multi sizes. 11 bucks for the husky 3 pack. even have see through windows. found a molle admin pouch on amazon for 13 bucks. there are much cheaper water bottles. ive scored 20 oz bottles for 5 bucks, my current bottle is a contigo that i use with a filter that will filter 250 gallons of water for virus's and 2000 gallons for everything else. thing is its convertible to a gravity. for that i use a sawyer to filter the water with the squeeze and use my uvbrite bottle to kill virus's 14 days in viet nam and drank nothing but tap water i filtered and treated.
So pack for carry on, but bring a multitool..... Better yet, buy a cheap one at your destination so you don't have to give up your good one to airport security. :)
Absolutely! I carry an Anker power strip with a 5ft extension cord which helps for those outlets located in tight or awkward spaces. The ‘head’ of the Anker power strip comes with many configurations so choose wisely. 👍🏻
i use a ungrounded to grounded adapter and a 6 inch plug that converts a single into 2. they cost like 5 bucks at home depot. the adapter a buck. just got back from viet nam and 1 time i could have used a 3 outlet but made due with the 2.
When I travel with “multi tool” options I make sure to take ones I won’t miss too much if they don’t make it through. There are less expensive “TSA approved” options that won’t hurt so much if this specific TSA officer decides he doesn’t approve 😉
Why have a wallet at all? Money clip will do the same thing. 6 weeks in the States, I'm bringing 3 cards; two credit cards (and one will be hidden in my bag somewhere), and my Snap Fitness keycard, if it works over there. Calculate how much cash you think you might need for the day/evening; that's how much you have in your clip at any one time.
Hey Dan! Recommending multi-tools is tricky because even some that claim to be TSA-friendly have the potential to be confiscated. That said, we have some options on our website that you can check out. I'll drop a link below! - Austin packhacker.com/travel-gear/?term=multi-tool
@@PackHacker I understand that, but PH has given qualified recommendations before, with carry on luggage for example. Seems like it wouldn't be hard to say "here are some multi tools that we at pack hacker are using, keep in mind that travelling through airport security with a multi tool could be risky, however we have had success travelling with these ones..."
I have an osprey packable sling. I used if very rare, as i am not a sling guy, prefer a small bag instead, the only reason is i need water all the time and i haven't find any minimalist sling in which i can kept the bottle, atleast of 750ml (i drink a lot) But there are some instances i had in which entry with bag was not allowed, however you can go with sling, as it can hide under the shirt or say its less noticeable 🍻
Hey Puneet! It's easy to get dehydrated while traveling. Slings are great for carrying your essentials, plus a water bottle. Thanks for sharing! - Austin
I hopefully have a trip coming up this year and bought 2 slings though I haven't practiced packing them yet, one is Alpaka and one is Eddie Bauer I believe, I can see the benefit of them but I'm not sure I'm a sling person either, and kind of wanted one to put all my electronics in to make TSA screening easier. If I can dump my Switch, phone, battery charger, ear buds all in one bag and then toss that into my personal tote/duffle its a bonus.
@@amymalone3995 yeah you can do that. Even my toilitry bag has same features, by keep the strap removing i use it as toilitry, and when i required i use it as sling. But i always found a bag to be more convenient 🙂
i walked around several stores and tried their slings out im not a sling guy either. i ended up picking up a bag on amazon. paid 25 bucks for it. from protector plus its called protector plus tactical sling bag. fits my 30 oz hydroflask though i used my 20 oz uvbrite bottle since i was filtering my water then treating it in the bottle in viet nam. and yes i too drink a lot.
ive found any packable rain jacket works. i bought a couple from aldi i keep in my car for giveaways. have a pull over i keep in my backpack. that one i have no idea who makes it but i have had it for close to 20 years and still works great. may have cost 5 bucks
I could never be a "minimalist" because I cannot afford 150 dollars for one shirt. It's as if you need an abundance of extra cash to be minimalist. Now that's funny
Wallet - well, rather yes than no, but even the Fjallraven isn't minimal enough. It doesn't fit into a jeans pocket. I have a tiny flat zippered pouch made of colorful XPac. Maybe 10 grams heavy. Merino hat - OK, packable puffy - OK. The crossbody... Uuugh, IDK. I found the sling bags pretty much useless because the minor items like keys, phone, wallet fit nicely into my pockets. On the other hand, the sling won't help me to stash a book from a museum or food from a grocery. So when the pockets are getting insufficient I opt for the backpack without half-measures. Never regretted an extra backpack, but regretted a helpless fanny pack a lot. But for pocket-less people probably it is fine. Bottle - definitely yes. Carabiner... Uhmmm, no) It was pretty funny to see hanging the bag to the fancy biner right near a normal stationary hanger. Come on, the upper loop of a backpack works perfectly with hangers without any intermediaries. I personally never felt a need in such device. Multitool - keychain-sized one probably would be OK, but can't tell. Pliers-with-a-knife type of one would ban you from flying with carry-on. What is really must have for me at any trip, is a loooong (1.8-2m) charging cable. Fantastic thing. Allows almost wireless capabilities.
Any tips on deodorizing clothes that you’re traveling with? After 3 consecutive wears my Smartwool top is having some odor at the armpits, and I’d like to spray something on it to wear it out one more time.
Hi, some people use feebreese for textiles. You can pour some in a smaller spray bottle and take that. Just keep it under 100ml (3 oz) if you are flying. It counts into your liquid allowence. Another option is baking soda. Since it is a poweder, it will not count into the liquids and it has multiple uses - it's good for an upset stomach, it's a mild abrasive if you need to clean something and has good deodorazing capability. Dust it on the garment (or into shoes if they are smelly) and let sit. After a few minutes dust off and you are good to go :-)
pick up a small refrigerator ionizer. they are rechargeable. put your items in a waterproof bag drop the ionizer in the bag. seal the bag after turning the device on. let it run over night. best thing to do though is wash the thing.
Always great content. But when covering wallets please indicate if they block RFID so your cards can’t be hacked. By the way, your videos have caused me to spend a lot of money with Amazon!😂
So one thing not mentioned in any travel video/vlog/blog is that merino wool runs very small, 1-2 sizes smaller than normal clothing. I've ordered 3 different brands, one from Amazon and 2 from the specific brands website and they are all super tight and form fitting which isn't flattering for overweight people, but would be fine for a baselayer. I'm wondering what people do with their passport when they are roaming around? There are tons of travel wallets but a passport doesn't just slip into your pocket and I cant imagine leaving in a hotel is safe?
@@PackHacker Wooly was the Amazon brand, Woolx I ordered directly from their website (the tshirt fit fine, but the long sleeve versions were small), and one was from Duluth Trading.
