Beautiful video ! Teaching in the redwoods for 26+ years there was nothing like the redwood forest in the snow. Just stunning. 2 fun facts for you. 1. The rennin/tanic acid in the back not only make the trees fire resistant but bug won't eat through to get the sap due to the very bitter acidic taste. The acid is mainly in the outer bark and as you move to the center of the tree you find less and less. This is why the fallen tree you were able to walk through is hollowed out. When a fire came through it burns the center out but the outer part of the tree remains. 2. The roots of the fallen tree you were doing pull ups on are incredible in of themselves. Knowing these trees can grow up to 300_ ft tall you would think (because of simple physics) that their roots must grow equally deep but they only grow about 20-30ft on average. You would think by leaning against one they would fall over but the trick is that they grow out more than they grow down. Intertwining with the trees next to them and beyond. Basically holding each other up during those big windstorms :)

I went to King’s Canyon with my folks and grandparents, when my Dad returned from Korea in 1952. Can you imagine the wonder that put in my 8 year old heart and mind. That wonder at God’s creation remains and I still have photos of that trip! What treasures! Thanks for reminding me.

2020? I think you mean 2022 good sir! It doesn't even make sense in my mind that you can walk in that tree. That's like walking through a cave, lol. Fire does have its way of changing the landscape. Although it does indeed cause damage, it isn't all bad. Allows for lots of new growth and helps rejuvenate the soil with nutrients. That is some deep snow and an amazingly large stump. I can see why people wouldn't believe it. Great video Commander!

Sequoia & Kings Canyon parks are incredible. If you ever get the chance you need to visit the Mineral King area of Sequoia National Park. Just driving the road to get there is an adventure!

Yeah I've been to Kings Canyon before and it's definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. Visiting with the snow though is obviously a bit different. You did a great job with talking about the history of all the falling and standing trees that you visited. You seemed a little extra enthusiastic talking about these behemoths in detail. That was a pretty crazy hike in deep snow going to the Chicago Stump! That's a very sad yet interesting story about that tree. I can't believe they were able to disassemble it and put it back together back then like they did for the World's Fair. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us.

That Chicago stump looked amazing. The hike to it through the snow with the awesome views was well worth the effort. I have stayed a couple of nights at Grant Grove village and done the short hike to the General Grant. I love exploring Sequoia and Kings Canyon parks. The landscapes are huge and the trees magnificent.

Kings is remote. Roads end is traditional route to cross over via Bubbs creek. 18 miles to Kearsarge Pass. Another route is White Mountain to Boundary peak. Both take two cars. Sequoia side in deep snow is awesome. Snowshoeing.

Randy, Very nice Off-Season tour! I think that March would be a good time for us to visit to have a chance for less crowds. I enjoy your excitement about these trees. Growing up in Washington State, we never lost our amazement of the beauty of the majestic forests. Growing up near old-growth forests here, I was still in wonder of the Redwoods in Northern California. Kings Canyon and Sequoia would be very enjoyable for us. Pretty positive you have the track of a Mountain Lion (a.k.a. Cougar), too big for a Bobcat. THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS EARLY SPRING TOUR, . . . Mike

What an incredible place! That stump was massive I can see why the people at the world's Fair didn't believe it lol Was researching old growth forest in the Great Smoky Mountains most of it was logged out in the 1800s but there's still a few trees left that are over 800 years old and they are huge you can find them on RU-vid. Hopefully one day I'll be able to find them would love to see it for myself! Thanks for sharing!

The kids and I went to Kings Canyon (among 12 other parks) last summer. I absolutely want to get back to Kings Canyon and spend a week just there to explore the trails and perhaps someday do the Rae Lakes hike up to 11,000+ ft. It's about a week loop almost 50 miles long.

Actually drones are illegal in the N. Parks. It's a 360 camera on a 10-foot selfie sick that disappears in the edit. You can see part of the pole in my right hand. Neat toy!

The road down to King’s Canyon is steep, narrow, and can be very icy and dangerous so the park keeps it closed during the winter months so people don’t end up driving off the road 1000’s of feet below into the King’s River (it’s happened) Actually went up to the Canyon with my dad the day before they closed the gate last year and we are going to try and go the first day it’s open this spring (usually April or May) King’s Canyon (the canyon itself) is absolutely beautiful and the campgrounds there are awesome! The King’s River that has carved the canyon is emerald green. Just check out photos of Zumwalt Meadows, Muir Rock and Roaring River Falls.

Good point! I was wondering the same thing myself, but do remember driving that steep and narrow road in 2017. It would be so hard to keep it safe. I also see Nat provided a great answer.

Sorry for the super random question but I'm just getting into 360 cameras (mainly due to watching the amazing footage you've shared!) When you are filming like you are around minute 11:00-11:30, are you using the extension stick you have listed? Do you have it fully extended? And which direction do you have your camera facing? I tried to replicate that and didn't do so great! Trying to figure out what I'm missing :) Thanks for sharing this trip though! I'm going this direction in October and wasn't going to stop by Kings Canyon but now I will!!

No problem! Yes, the 10-foot stick is fully extended. Technically it should not matter how you have a the camera facing. Usually I keep the two lenses facing off to the sides. Be sure to remove the rubber stopper by the base of the stick (if you have one). Try to export 3840x2160 (4K). Hold the stick as still as possible too.

When you don’t see claws in a large print it’s most likely a mountain lion. Cats retract their claws and bears,dogs,etc..don’t have retractable claws
