Make no mistake, this is the battle line between those who care about patient care, and those who only care about hospital profits. Private equity has taken over the medical system.

“Hire more nurses.” So much easier said than done. There has been a shortage of nurses, especially highly experienced nurses, in America for decades. When I was still working in a large hospital, we were always short staffed and we the nurses were stressed and exhausted. I’m glad I survived and proud to have provided care and comfort to hundreds of patients during my decades long career in nursing.

Everyone always says it’s not just about the money, but it’s ALWAYS about the money. They tag on other reasons for the strike just not to seem too greedy. $130k-$160k for 3 12 hour days is pretty generous even by mainland standards. That’s not counting the overtime they would get. I have family member that’s a nurse in San Diego that makes about the same. If they hire more nurses, they will lose overtime, and they will probably complain about that too. When you sign up to be a nurse, you should know it’s not an easy job, sometime you have more patients, like during COVID times, sometimes less. Nurses have the top paying job on the island, but they are masking the greed by saying they it’s all about patient safety. Does a barista get to say they only expect to serve 10 customers a day? Does a server get to strike because there are double the customers on Mother’s Day? I guess if they are in a union, they probably would. Haha. Being in a union emboldens people to strike because they think it shields them from getting fired. I appreciate the hard work the nurses do, but I do not empathize and support their strike. What job isn’t crappy and hard? I like to see the firemen strike because there are too many fires in a year. Ridiculous!
@Eme80865
@Eme80865 4 дня назад
Comparing nurses with baristas and servers is like comparing apples and oranges. We're dealing with patients' lives. When you have too many patients, ypur patients are going to suffer, and they won't get the quality care they deserve. In regards to firefighters, they're fighting one fire at a time. They're not having to spread themselves among several fires at one time. Nurses know their job is hard and accept that. What's not acceptable is having a workload so heavy that you barely have time to use the bathroom or can't have a decent lunch break. I wouldn't want to have such an overworked nurse take care of a family member or myself.

@teboniquemickle6056
@teboniquemickle6056 День назад
You sound ridiculous and obviously have no idea what your are talking about more patients is literally unsafe. In fact the more patients a nurse has increase patient mortality because guess what if a patient's health is declining you may be to busy with all your other patients and tasks that you have to do and may not notice that change in condition if it is not overt. Firefighters deserve good pay too for risking their lives and I hope they go on strike too if they aren't being paid appropriate wages for their job. Send your loved one to the hospital where a nurse has to many patients and see how quick your tune changes, better yet go to a local nursing home and see how they expect one nurse to care for 20+ patients and see how broken the health care system really is.

@scarletn9124 , understood but the cost will only be passed along to us the consumer via insurance coverage premiums and cost. Don’t complain when this happens. Most are likely in a two or more household income so I’d say that it is a decent salary.

Coerced into caring. Disempowering, demoralizing, and deflating to surrender power of agency. Soul sucking sacrificing lends to toxic unreciprocated power dynamics. Salaries are the false veneer and distraction. Salaries signal surrendering and sacrifice at the cost of what professional dignity? Returning to an unbalanced power dynamic is like returning to a toxic bad relationship. The contempt, resentment, or mind numbing dissociation or blatant addictive coping mechanisms should tie workers compensation cases with the amount of causation and workforce unwellness that is messaged. Especially in an desert environment of a high cost of survival.

We work 36 hours per week or more for those 3 weekly workdays and they don’t give us our mandated breaks for which they pocket our productivity. They are drowning us with 6:1 patient to nurse ratio when most of the Continent is 4:1, they expect us nurses to do 50% more workload to enhance their bottom line vs considering safer ratios and improved quality of healthcare and avoid staff burnout. That goes for children patients too! They offered us 3%, 3%, and 4.5% annual raises that never catch us back up to the outrageous Hawai’i inflation. We do not come close to making $160k per year we make $110-$120k. Before 2020 a nurse could buy a single family home now we can’t. Enough is enough, we are spent and now we can hardly afford to house ourselves!

I don't think most people living in Hawaii have wages that keep up with inflation. In the 80's my parents could be a home in Hawaii Kai for $80,000. This was almost double my dad's annual wages. Mom didn't work. The median home price in Hawaii is now 1.1 million. To be comparable I should be earning $500,000 a year and we all know I'm not even close. Do you think anyone feels sorry for you that since 2020 you can't afford a single family home? Many have been priced out much longer than that.
