Welcome to Tenerife, an island where volcanic black sand beaches melt into the cold Atlantic Ocean. A place where each sunset is magical and as spectacular as the landscapes that hide them.
The Anaga Natural Park occupies the northernmost part of the Island, and is full of giant cacti, mountains and valleys. Although without a doubt the most surprising thing is the sudden changes in its landscapes, as well as finding old abandoned houses built within the mountain itself.
After an intense day full of contrasts, we arrived at our apartment in Mesa del Mar, a small secluded town built at the base of the cliffs. Its huge windows allowed us to see the sunsets every afternoon, with incredible views of El Teide, and the sun setting behind the Atlantic Ocean.
Although it seems that we have changed continents, we are still in Tenerife, specifically in the Tajao arch, a desert formed by the remains of a volcanic eruption of 200 thousand years ago. The lava has been eroded into the impressive shape of today, where the colours of the desert contrast with the blue of the sky and the sea.
The next day it was time to drive across the island, driving through winding roads and vast plains, through lava fields and cliffs, to finally head towards what would be an experience difficult to forget.
On the south coast of the island, aided by the Gulf Stream, underwater life is so abundant that just a few meters from the coast it is possible to enjoy the presence of turtles and dolphins.
Undoubtedly one of the most impressive places in Tenerife is El Teide, a huge volcano 3700 meters high and 7500 meters high above the ocean floor, which makes it the highest mountain in Spain, and the third highest volcano on Earth. Surrounded by other volcanoes, lava fields, and columns of magma, its landscapes seem taken from another planet. To get to the top, we decided to take the cable car, which would take us to 3500 meters high. Although it is difficult to breathe up there, we ventured on a short hike to Pico Viejo, the site of the last eruption in 1798. The views of the crater with the rest of the islands in the background are impressive, and make us think about what would happen in the case of a new eruption.
Arriving at our apartment was like landing squarely in Paradise. Surrounded by banana trees and tropical plants, from the pool you could see the cliffs ending in incredible black sand beaches. The sun set every night behind the island of La Palma, creating the most beautiful sunsets I have probably ever seen.
We could not go through Tenerife without visiting some of its most charming towns, such as La Laguna; declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, or La Orotava famous for its Casa de los Balcones. There we had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the history of the post-colonial Canaries, discovering the lifestyle on the Islands 300 years ago.
In Icod de los Vinos is the now legendary Millennial Dragon Tree, over 18 meters high and approximately 700 years old. Following the winding roads of the island we arrive at Masca, a small town hidden between the slopes of the mountains.
On our last day, we decided to say goodbye to the island in the best possible way, visiting one of its most remote beaches to enjoy the sunrise. I wish you could have seen it for yourself... The combination of black sand with the first rays of the morning sun create a contrast as spectacular as it is relaxing, and the absolute silence was only interrupted by the waves of the sea.
It has undoubtedly been a week full of contrasts, unique experiences and incredible landscapes. Enjoying spectacular sunsets, contact with nature and disconnection from every day routine. I'm dying to enjoy more of the Canary Islands.
