In this video, we are continuing our Thailand Travel Guide. We are once again in the beautiful city of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. This time we are exploring 3 of the best things to do in Chiang Mai that no one talks about: An airport café, a manmade waterfall park and an elephant sanctuary where they turn elephant poo in works of art. All 3 locations in today’s video are from 20 to 40 minutes away from Chiang Mai Thailand and all 3 can be done as a day trip from Chiang Mai.
We start our morning by visiting a unique café in the north of Chiang Mai, in the Mae Rim area, called Air Diamond Café and Hotel. The café is located inside an actual decommissioned airplane.
You can visit the outside of the plane for free. To see the inside of the plane, you need to buy a boarding ticket that costs 100 Bhat per person, which is about 3 US dollars. When inside of the plane, you can grab a coffee or a pastry and relax, walk around in the airplane, and visit the cockpit. For Airplane enthusiasts, they even have free pilots’ uniforms if you want to take a picture in the cockpit.
Our next stop for the day, only 10 minutes north of the Airplane Cafe, is Dantewada Waterfall Park. The entrance to the park is 80 Bhat per person, which is about 2 US dollars. The theme park is also commonly known as the Dantewada Land of Angels Waterfall Park. This is one of the most beautiful hidden gems in Chiang Mai, and chances are you will only see local people when you visit. Dantewada Waterfall Park is quite large, so you need at least 2 to 3 hours to explore the grounds, the multiple manmade waterfalls, the caves, the beautiful flower gardens, and all the gift shops, the petting zoo, café, and restaurant. You can grab a coffee or something to eat and enjoy the beautiful views the park has to offer.
Our third and last stop for the day is an elephant sanctuary called Elephant Poopoo Paper Park, which is known for something very unique. The whole park is dedicated to teaching you how they handcraft paper out of elephant poo. The guided tour costs 150 Bhat per person, which is about 4 US dollars. The tour guide shows you all the different steps of the paper-making process. At the end of the tour, you get to make your own paper. There is also a crafts section where you can decorate the different notebooks and other things they have for sale. If you are traveling with kids, this is a unique, fun, and educational activity.
