My recent putting together of an travel art bag has led me to delving into the world of travel watercolour palettes, and I've been smitten!
I thoroughly enjoyed deciding what paints to include, filling up some new palettes and swatching them out, here in this video.
I've said it before, but I derive as much pleasure from thinking about, organising and playing with art materials as I do using them in any serious way!
I refer to lots of my other videos in this video, which can be found here:

I think you might not find too much judgement in this community regarding the amount of art materials we own versus our use of these materials or level of skill. It is likely most of us here are guilty of the same obsession/pleasure with no regrets or apologies for our collections. Lucky eBay find on the Portable Painter. I'm not sure what paper you used for your granulating selection swatches but it sure did those paints justice in displaying how beautifully they granulate.

My current most micro travel pallet is a $4 tiny repurposed eyeshadow pallet from the polar store. Scraped out all the makeup cleaned and added tube paint. Two next to Each other so they can be used separate or blended into a new colour using the inside lid as a tiny mixing area with a waterbrush. This fits even in my smallest purse with a very small sketchbook. Such as the Talens art creation (9cm x 14cm).

❤❤❤ Such fun!! I totally relate to your comment about the amount of art supplies you own not being proportional to the amount/quality of painting you do. I 100% feel that sentiment. If someone examined my art supply “stash”, they’d assume I was a professional artist who did nothing else, I’m sure 😂… definitely not the situation. I just love all the beautiful colours, palettes, brushes, sketchbooks… all of the supplies are just so lovely and fun ❤. The Nomadic palette looks very similar to Art Toolkit’s pocket painter… they are so tiny, I don’t mind grabbing a couple of them for my bag and taking with other palettes. I’ve been planning on filling one of mine with granulating colours as well! I have a few spread out across multiple travel palettes at the moment. That’s another thing, if someone looked at my collection of travel palettes alone, they would assume I am on the road 40-45 weeks of the year and never paint at home 😂. I love the size of travel palettes even when I’m painting at home. In the summer, I frequently take my paints outside and paint while sitting on the deck or veranda. Good job immediately filling your pocket painter and not overthinking your colour selection! I have had mine since December and have not filled it yet 😅.

Ah, art material...I hope I will live long enough to use all the stuff I buy. 😁 I made a micro palette out of a metal tin for business cards and half high half pans with magnetic adhesive tape put on. A white adhesive foil glued into the lid for mixing and off you go. Three rows of six pans are possible. But mostly I put twelve in and a piece of tissue to clean the waterbrush. That thing is so small that you can carry it at almost all times. And so I do, together with a small sketchbook and a waterbrush and a pencil. Daniel Smith has announced they bought a big chunk of the last batch of PO 48. Might last for a few years. Thx for the vid.

I thought I might mention that traveling with pans poured from honey-based paint (like Sennellier and M. Graham) can end up quite messy, since they never fully cure, and when traveling you will have less time to let your palette dry before you close it up and move on. Maybe give it a test-run before you head out on a big trip with your honey-based paints from the tube. And those A. Gallos 😍😍🤩

I think that in updated palette for micro I’d replace brown with something like payne’s gray - this would give me olive with yellow and grayish color helps with lazy shadows. About nomadic artist palette: I got Art toolkit’s one from Artemiranda, but then bought steel business card holder from Muji, some magnetic sheets to cut and stick inside and moved those pans to it - so now I have same palette but it sticks to magnets. I actually have two now: one with my basic colors and big mixing pans and additional with tiny pans and more fun colors

@helencryer
@helencryer Год назад
Oh how lovely!! Yes, I think it's a lovely little thing. I'm not an expert at all, but if you have a warm yellow (ochre or quinacridone gold kind of colour) and a cool yellow, (like Lemon Yellow or Hansa or Cadmium Yellow Light) plus a warm and a cool blue (warm = ultramarine is good, cool = something more turquoise leaning), then you'll be able to mix loads and loads of wonderful greens and blues. Then you could pick a cool and warm red (a pinky one like Quin Rose and an orangey one like Pyrrol Scarlet) then you can mix all the browns you need. I did a couple of videos on choosing colours for a palette, if that helps: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cdwEDR-atr8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p6Mx6C7T4cw.html

I'm so with you on the watercolour palettes - I spent so long trying to find one that fit my purposes, tried looking into DIY ones, and finally found a solution that worked for me. I did buy the portable painter mini and while it is a fantastic feat of engineering I find that I just don't like it. It's too small to use as a main palette but a bit too big for me to feel comfortable working with it plein air 😐 Not that I regret buying it as it does have a use, just not a use I wanted it for. My solution was realising I had a metal tin thanks to buying the old version of Daler Rowney's aquafine watercolours (set of 10 in a metal tin, not the 12 in a long plastic case). I tore out the plastic insert and used some double sided tape to secure the new half pans in. It's not quite as thin as the Nomadic Artist one I believe but I have been able to fit in 27(!) different colours in, 24 in standard half pans and 3 in standard whole pans. If I replaced the whole pans I could have something that held 30 different colours. All for something that's a little bigger than the palm of my hand, weight 180g even with almost all the pans at full capacity, and is still slim and portable for my work 😁

It's pretty good! In the Line and Wash set that I showed, it's got a mixture of Graphitints, which seem to be watercolour mixed with graphite, so they behave a bit differently to watercolours, and it also has Inktense pans, which are dye based, and don't lift like watercolours. They are very vivid! It also has a couple of pastels, with white pigment in, so partly opaque. I actually think it's a quite an interesting little palette and have no regrets getting it, but it just has different qualities from top brand watercolours.

@helencryer
@helencryer Год назад
I guess it just depends how long you're going away for, and obviously on what you're painting, but I'd have thought it would last a good few paintings. I just like plenty of water for granulating paints, not necessarily loads of pigment, and if I'm doing my tiny paintings, it would last for ages!

The most convenient travel palettes are the generic rectangular plastic folding ones. And that because they can hold 20 to 28 colours and have plenty of mixing space while they are completely flat. It is not the size of the palette, I mean the dimensions that occupy a lot of space in a bag because you ain't going to use after all something smaller than A5 if you want to sketch something while you are travelling, but how bulky your sketch kit is. What is the point to try to squeeze your paints into a super small box when you are going to have an otherwise bulky sketchbook with hard cover that will add weight on top of that into your bag? So for me the best setup is a plastic folding palette, a number or loose paper sheets of the paper of my choice into a plastic paper sleeve, a lightweight clip board also placed into the paper sleeve, a retractable silicone water container, ( one of those that are completely flat) into a plastic pouch along with my pencils, my brushes and some paper towels. This setup occupies less space than the thickness of a regular sketchbook into a hand or sketching or travel bag simply because it is flat. The palette boxes that have movable parts that you have to attach somehow are problematic, because you can easily lose some parts of them not to mention that you have to re assemble them after finishing your sketching session. It is more complicated than just fold the palette and throw it into your bag. As for the bags the most convenient are the cross body ones because you can access them instantly and if they are in the right size you can hold a load of other things in there.
@helencryer
@helencryer Год назад
Interesting to hear your set-up, thanks! It just comes down to personal preference. I want a Sketchbook, because I think they're aesthetically pleasing, and I want my pictures together like that, and like the protection of two covers. I was happy with the weight and shape of my set-up - it worked fine for me, and I didn't want to use my cross body bag, because it would get in the way of my other hiking stuff - I wanted something to stash away in my rucksack.
@creativecolours2022

@@helencryer Of course it is a matter of personal preferences. I've just thought to add my two cents into the discussion. Sketchbooks are definitely more aesthetically pleasing but if one intends to fill a sketchbook only with sketches that are made on spot and from life, it will end up with a very worn out , battered abused sketchbook along with its contents. And I've learned this in practice, during my own travels, urban sketching etc. The loose paper sheets for sketching stay longer in good condition because you don't have them always with you. You make your sketches and then you store them instantly there is no way to spoil them because you throw f.e accidentally a glass of water or your coffee. If something like this happens on your sketchbook that's it. It is done along with the sketches. Anyway.. your channel is very interesting and I'm glad that I've joined it.

That's a good point! I'm still quite new to watercolouring really, and have yet to finish a whole sketchbook, so I'll have to see what state it's in by the end!! Thanks!

The very thin palette you got You can make your own for a fraction of the price by buying a card holder business card holder for an empty magnetic make up case and buying in the bank up pants. They come in all shapes and sizes, including the ones in it. You can buy them individually and they’re a lot cheaper

This is a good idea, though I'm interested whether you have managed to find the same sized pans as here? I did try looking for the things individually, but for a tin and smaller pans like this, it actually worked out more expensive, without magnetic sheeting even, or making the lid white. I'd be grateful if you can let me know where you get your pans from, please!

@@helencryer You could always try looking at empty makeup pans/upcycling a makeup pan for a mini palette. You'll have far more empty pans than you'll need buying them separately for one single business card holder - or you could look at making a mini palette from a pillbox. Less flexibility for the latter but you'l come across some cute designs and interesting layouts

Thank you! I'm probably not looking to get any more palettes at the moment, but I was curious where the small empty pans were from for the sake of anyone wanting to make a business card one for cheaper. Having all the extra Amazon half pans though, I'll definitely be on the look out for super cute tins to put them in!

If I were going to try to find pans for the Nomadic Painter, or here in the states the Art Toolkit palette, I would go to the dollar store and search for cheap makeup, particularly eyeshadows, in metal pans……or else I would clean out my makeup drawer and repurpose old eyeshadow metal containers that way.

I'm actually pretty happy with the long pans that came in the Nomadic painter!
