Traveling to ALASKA & ATV Tour Exploring Hatcher Pass!!!

Where is Jason? Well, he gave up his spot on this trip so I could take our grandaughter Sophia on her first trip to Alaska! After a very long travel day, we arrive in Anchorage... then jump in our rental car and head two hours north to Willow where we are staying at the Hatchers Pass Castle... yes, there is a castle up here!
The next day, it's time for our ATV tour!! This is why we are up in this area. Let me tell you, this was AMAZING!!! The ATV tour was so much fun! And we could not ask for more beautiful scenery!!! We drove through a creek, went mud ridding, rock climbing and panning for gold... such an incredible excursion!!!

Once the tour was over, we decided to drive the entire road of Hatcher Pass as we were told the views just get prettier and there is a lake at the summit. I am SO GLAD we did this!!! This is the most spectacular drive I have ever made! The longer you drive down the pass the more incredible the views get... and there is a lake at the top that was still partially frozen... in July! We never thought we would make it back to Anchorage as we kept stopping to take in the beauty of this amazing state!

What great memories you are helping Sophia create! Way too go! Traveling offroad with a UTV is how we travel with our RV. We gave up motorcycle riding and bought a side by side and we love it! So many places in the USA to off road and enjoy the beauty. We did a tour when we cruise to Hawaii last February and it was amazing. This Hatcher Pass tour looks like it will go on our bucket list. This is an AMAZING series for sure. I know it is something Sophia will remember forever!

For those who don't know, most car rental companies and RV rentals do not allow driving thru Hatcher Pass. You will be fined. Always check first.

If she gets a chance and you happen to another partially frozen lake, have Sophia "skip" a rock across the ice. It makes a really cool electronic keyboard sound that she would really enjoy. I really hope to return to Alaska for a visit one day myself.

Watching this now. I LOVE that you travel with your grandkids. Reminds me of road trips with my grandparents. Can’t wait to watch all of this series. We unfortunately had to cancel our Alaskan cruise next summer, but we plan to rebook for 2026 or 2027. I’ve been trying to think of a way to convince my husband to do an Alaskan land & cruise tour.

I would have been with you at Cane’s. We have gone out of our way to have their fingers and sauce - but not yet detoured all the way to AK for them. Those glacial valleys are beautiful. Looking forward to the rest of this journey (and all of the ones you do).

You need to take your RV to Alaska. We drove one from Iowa ( for Great Alaskan Holidays - they get new rvs each year and have a good deal to drive one to Anchorage ). Drive there then take the Marine Ferry system back, stopping at some different, non cruise ports !

Wow, so beautiful! Reminds me of Jasper and Banff National Parks in the Canadian Rockies (Also a gorgeous RV route). I am a little worried about your flip flops, though. You could easily twist an ankle on the rugged terrain as you're adventuring, with no ankle support or grip... then what would Sophia do to help as you're stranded out in the boonies?

Have you been on Alaska Airlines? They are now ranked # 2 top airline in the US. They are all over the USA. Your granddaughter had me laughing because she is being goofy behind your back on camera she must be taking after her grandpa Jason. I'm glad you guys enjoyed our beautiful state of Alaska.

What the heck! I live a few miles from Hatcher Pass. I would have loved to run into you but we are crossing paths. I am currently in Houston, Texas in my RV with my husband and we will soon be driving our RV home. We will follow the Mississippi River part of the way so will make our way to Louisiana before we head home. I hope you enjoyed your time in AK.
