Check country and airline specific details though. Sometimes airlines only allow one piece of carry on and 7 kg, no ‘personal item’, and dimensions 115cm international or 105 cm domestic. One example - Flying out of India one piece only, Qantas, no personal item. But anywhere else with Qantas, can have personal item. On Singapore Airlines, the personal item limit is ‘The maximum dimensions for these bags are 40x30x10cm each. If your item exceeds the total dimension of 80cm (the length, width and height combined), it will be counted as part of your standard cabin baggage allowance. You will then be required to check in either your cabin bag or the additional item’.

These videos are always useful. Flying has become such an ordeal, especially if you have to make multiple connections. It feels like the airlines are plotting to increase our stress levels, and make flying even more of an ordeal than it used to be. Travelling with camera gear has become a science in itself, especially if you like to travel light.

I’m amazed how much you fitted in that bag, Emilie! Well packed! Those 3 legged camera wraps look interesting too. Have one of their tripods. Flying is such an ordeal, especially for us in Australia, heading long-haul for anywhere! You can‘t come home quickly. Thank you for this interesting video, Emilie and Bon voyage😊

I have that same Wandrd bag and recently traveled with it. Like you, it was my personal item for the plane. My only regret was not having the accessory straps at the time of my trip. I’ve since purchased them to give me easier access to the inside of the bag when I’m out taking photos. I love how you skipped using the dividers and just wrapped your equipment in order to fit more in the bag. I’m definitely going to look for those wraps. Thank you.

One needs to check airline requirements especially if the trip involves several airlines. Qantas and Jetstar only allow minimum personal item and a total weight of carry-on and personal item 7kg.

I have this bag for 6 months now. I got it exactly for the same reasons as Emilie: great for carry-on + personal item combo for plane travel. It's also my main bird photo bag. The 300mm F4/OM1 will fit across and can be accessed through the side door, even with the 1.4TC. Also the thin profile is better on my back because it keeps Center of gravity close to the body.

Wow, Emily, thanks for the advice about using the app to actualize the camera. I didn´t know that option. I also have a Mac and I turned crazy, but finally got it. Maybe you could do a video explaining how to actualize with the app. I have seen no actual video about it.

This is a great configuration for two-bag carry-on travel. My issue is how to organize a wildlife photography kit for one bag carry-on travel. The Peak Designs 45L bag is just a little too big for many airlines, and so far I haven't found a 40L configuration that works. I'd love to know your thoughts on this issue.

The 40L is too big for me, that is why I went with the 11L. It actually can carry everything I need. The 31L used to be my go to bag but I just really like to carry a few gear and go simple so it works for me.

Thanks for this video. I will look into that backpack. I pack similarly, without the dividers. I use lenscoat covers for my camera bodies and lenses. I was wondering about the carry-on bag you found. I've been looking for one with four rollers, but not the hard sided ones that are more common. What brand is it?

Hi, I have the same bag and like it a lot as a personal item for traveling. Works for most airlines but have to be careful of weight-many airlines have weight limits too. What did yours weigh with all that stuff?

You are so right. Not just a question of the backpack and large wheeled trolly which hogs a large amount of space in the overhead lockers on a plane to the detriment of other passengers but most definitely the total weight.

I own both a hoodie and a vest from SCOTTeVEST. They have a huge number of large pockets. When I have been concerned about an airline weighing my carry on, I have put lenses and my iPad in the SCOTTeVEST, and then returned them to my carry on before going through security. Of course, because I took these precautions, no one seemed to care about my carry on’s weight🤷🏻‍♂️

Great video. I’m planning a 10 day trip to France. The airline allows small carry on and a personal bag. Will this backpack fit my EM1 mk2, 40-150 plus a 12-40, chargers, iPad, small bag of prescription drugs, personal papers, ereader, sunglasses? The carry on will take shoes, clothes etc. Thanks!

For your 150-400mm, couldn’t you flip the lens hood around to keep it together. Also, I always keep the tripod plate on ball head to keep them together. Thanks!

You could keep the lens hood. I didn't for weight and because I was carrying my laptop but it does fit in the bag

I'm primarily a wildlife shooter. When I'm traveling for photography, I seem to have two requirements that conflict with each other. First is that I want to be absolutely sure that all my camera gear goes as carry-on. Second, I would like to reconfigure whatever backpack that I take so that when I'm on site I can carry one body with the 40-150 attached, and a second body with the 150-400 attached. Both these cameras need to be easy to access when I encounter good wildlife situations. Plus, I would much prefer not to have gear swinging around on my body while hiking. Would this small Wandrd backpack be able to be re-configurable to hold both bodies with lenses attached for easy access?

Mike, I think it probably won't work attached- not for easy access anyway. My 300mmF4/1.4TC/OM-1 rig fits tightly across the bag where I can get to it via side the side door - around 11.5 to 12 inches altogether. But the 150-400 is 12 inches by itself plus the body would be too much I think. Then you would still have the 40-150 attached to another body. The only way these two would fit attached I think is verically side by side in the bag - and that is removing the bottom diivider of the upper compartment. Then you could get to both by opening the clamshell flap or from the top of the bag through the roll top compartment. I think everything would fit detached in the main (padded) compartment - that's 11.5x9 inches. Hope this helps.

I agree with @mcfl1 having two body with easy access is hard. When I am in the field, my camera is always out of my bag. That is the only easy access for me. I also like to carry my camera on my belt so it is another option

Thanks Emilie! I travel from NY to France quite regularly as well. My issue now is not the volume it’s the weight. 12 kg total for carry on is impossible for me for my photo gear, a laptop and minimum of clothes. How do you keep it all under international regs?

When you have a chance can you give us an approximation of the combined weight of your bag and suitcase with what you brought? I am trying to see if I am going to buy another suitcase to be able to checkin.

I had no issues and actually nobody ended up checking my bag. I just carry light things. My gear being an OM SYSTEM photographer is very light so i am lucky. I don't own a scale so I am not sure how much my bag is but will try to find one in the coming weeks to tell you

Thanks for your reply! I am all Olympus as well and to my surprise it is very easy to get to 12 kg when traveling internationally with only carry on and personal. They consider 12kg for all items combined…
