John Bird. I think he would have made a great Arthur Daley if George Cole hadn't been considered.

Certainly intriguing to imagine how he'd have played it. Contender for a remake: Nigel Farage! He's already got the mohair overcoat. Would need to work on his Cockney accent a bit though, granted.

The Episode Hustler Guest Star as Katie Played by Kelly Lawrence. Would go on later to star in Granada Television's Short Lived Soap Albion Market. But she is best known for playing The role WPC Claire Brind in Thames Television Drama Series The Bill (1988 - 1989) 📺💖

38 pence for bread seams reasonable; I remember 20 cents for a loaf of bakery bread in late 70s NZ. Have been in Army surplus shops just like that one. Shame he had to throw his gloves and a perfectly good helmet away though.

Early canal tunnels were built without a towpath as this would require a much larger bore [for the horses], and hence cost more to build. Prior to the introduction of motorised boats, legging [the act of moving a narrowboat through a canal tunnel, while lying on your back] was one of the few options for getting a boat through such a tunnel. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legging_(canals) The engine might not have been turned on due to poor ventilation, not sure. They spoke of smoke stains on the roof. Steam engines were often fitted to boats that had previously been drawn by horses. Steam powered narrowboats were often used on longer routes, travelling non-stop day and night. They needed larger crews but the engines could be run non-stop, unlike the horses who needed food and rest.
