There's various reasons for people's ups and downs. Whether dealing with their own pasts, or the things they face in life.. sometimes people just need to hear they are loved. Despite how dysfunctional my family may have seemed to others we told each other I love you consistently. It was something that wasn't even thought about because it was brought up to me that my husband noticed that I always said I love you with a phonecall whether to my brother, mum or dad. It was a decision I had made years and years ago after hearing that someone lost someone they loved unexpectedly.. though it could get fiery in my family at times.. I always wanted the last words they heard to be I love you. You never know when that isn't an option to say anymore. They were meant though.
