I can't believe you post all of the drum transcriptions of all of these songs man. I've really never seen someone so gracious to want to share their work like that for free! You truly inspire me. My leg is still struggling to keep up in Icarus Lives after all these years that have gone by since you made that Juggernaut video.
Dude the two 19" crashes sound so good I almost don't want you to go back to 19/18 haha. I'm so glad you're still doing these videos when you get the time. They're such a valuable insight into your evolution as a player. Seeing how much you led with your left food and chicked the right side hats or the way you composed fill-ins compared to your more recent playing is very interesting indeed.
Thanks pal! I'm really feelin' 'em. With session stuff it always depends on the music, but as for solo work I'm thinking this is gonna be the setup for 'Finite II' -- might trade out the china for the K, we'll see.
Oh yah, forgot to mention the first time I tried it is when I started recording the second DIG full-length last year. Adam and Paul (bassist) came down from NYC and did some experimentation. We ended up using the 19/19 on quite a few tunes and I grew to love it from there.
Love that you're pumpin out more of the P1 covers..... I can't play any of 'em - but been patiently waiting to see how it's done. The ~2.50 section particularly for omf. Looking fwd to the insomnia release
Travis! I'd just like to know....would you be part of Periphery again in the future if you guys wanted? Some years ago i remember reading something like "if the band would not have gone so famous " you would've kept on going. Why? I'm sure they also love what you do, i mean...I'm pretty sure that you could take them into a whole next level! Give it a shot!!!! :D!
I've never said that. I've been asked this question a host of times and my response, invariably, is if the band's dynamic has changed and they've embraced a more collaborative spirit then I'd certainly consider it.
I focus on tuning and playing my ass off. I'm fortunate to have a close friend in Taylor Larson who sets me up with badass templates. I'll mess with leveling and some minor EQ from there, but a lot of it is in his (capable) hands.
It's funny, Periphery 1 totally changed the way I thought about and approached music. But listening to these old tunes, they feel incredibly immature compared to anything the band has done from Periphery 2 on, despite the insanely tight and creative drumming (as always)! As much as I love Matt Halpern for his nonstop tasty grooves, I really would love to hear a parallel universe recording of Periphery where Travis stuck around. Especially with Nolly handling the production.
Speaking as an outsider, it could be due to the fact that the band embraced more of a collaborative spirit post-debut. I'm pretty certain every song on the debut was written by Misha, excluding "Racecar" (Misha/Jake). I'd love to work with Nolly.
The old songs have a special feeling that the new ones don't, a special vibe. Travis's drumming is a big part of it. Plus the original songs didn't have any filler riffs for repeating vocal lines. Just pure instrumental freedom
Hey Travis, what's going through your cans while you track something like this? Are you hearing a whole mix of your drums and/or the song, or just a click track? Maybe both? great video, thanks.
With my current routine I do 10 sets (6 containing supersets) of isolation movements before I even get to presses, so not much as I'm quite pre-exhausted; I max at 70lb dumbbells. I have clean and pressed (twice) 185, but I very rarely do that motion.
Hey Travis, amazing playing as always. I wanted to ask something about the way you hold the stick... I always notice you've got a fair bit coming out the back of your hand... do you do this consciously or is that the way you've always played? Or do you have really long sticks?
