Back in the late 90's 2000 I was trying to put together my own ramps and rails. Hell I've watched redbull backyard build off 100 times😂 this dude gave me confidence to build what I loved. Now I own a stainless steel fabrication business 20years later.
I was born in ‘80. I started bmx/ freestyle by 6 years old. I worshiped Mat , Dave Mirra, Jay Mirron etc. They were actually not bad role models and I can still rip on anything from dirt bikes to horses.
This hits me hard. I'm putting the bmx bike that I credit for saving my life 15 years ago back together. I really feel what he says about his connection to bmx.
I rode, and snowboarded with Nate in the early 90’s. He’s always had an eye for building these gnarly jumps, whether it was dirt, or snow he was always building. Loading up 6-7 bikes in his trunk and driving out to the Super Shops. A bunch of crazy ass young men. RIP Mikey Barry.
"Just push with your arm" - Nate Wessel, circa 1999 Ride BMX Toothpick stall how to article. Best advice of all time!!! Nate is a true hero and a huge part of what made BMX what it is!
Nate Wessel was one of those dudes I couldnt help but idolize as a child. I learned to fabricate, I learned to make ramps, and I took that "JUST FKN SEND IT" mindset to heart. This is a dude who was so inspirational to me, I even named my first born child (Nathaniel) after the legend himself. 31 years old now, and I still get a rush when It comes to BMX
being a kid from Compton California bmx streets out the hood change my view on life my aggression and attitude was on 100 got in trouble at 14 watched RAD! then was sent to stay with a cousin for a summer out the hood ridind a beat up dyno out of place diffrent element but by the end of the day i was fitting right in been hooked since my first bunny hop attempt up a curb and pop my tire from that point on until now its ride or die 2020
Nate is my spirit animal. Not because of of how I fist saw him in the props vids... his attitude toward life, hard work and ingenuity. That is a man of legend. He sees what cannot be seen and makes it reality. What a true craftsman and overall total badass
I think its worth mentioning, this guy is a legend outside of BMX as well. I worked at woodward for years as an inline counselor and have been involved for a long time. Everyone knew his name and knew he was the one dreaming up the next level ramps you can find at these facilities. In many ways, he changed my life. Thanks for everything Nate!!
I can totally relate to finding peace and clarity in action sports. Since my TBI 3 years ago it's been really difficult not being able to ride or do much anymore. Having no purpose or 'chase' in life is very challenging.
I had the privilege of meeting him a few times the first time was in 2000 and i was a punk kid and he was super nice and just an all around awesome guy. Always looked up to him!
I just recently started getting into bmx so don't lynch me Vets it's the first I've heard of Nate Wessel but I know a legend & pioneer when I see one!! This is such a great a piece & gives him at least a piece of honor & recognition he deserves!
I was at woodward camp in the summer of 03. Popped a tire in lot 8 and Nate gave me a lift back to my truck to get a tube. Just a super nice guy and talented as hell to boot.
I'm a brasilian bmxer, I ride for about 20 ears now, ,,, Nate allways was one of mine inspirations because he allways ride in his particular way, have his own stile, for shure one of mine influences,,, at etinies foward he chose Obituary for his video part,,,, dying !!!! I will be glad if he see this post !!! I hope some day meet you personaly just to shake your hands and thank you for make part of my bike riding!!
Dude is a total badass. In Road Fools 8 he did the most incredible gap in bmx at Kona skatepark - popped out of a bank and landed on top of a pavilion roof and rode off. It seriously looks like it is 15ft tall out of the bank . Still unbelievable 20 years later
I'm lucky enough to live in a town where Nate built a skatepark. All the local skaters and BMXers turned out and spent four amazing days together with Nate and his crew helping them out as general labour and then a fifth day riding it with him. One of the raddest guys in a sport full of very rad guys.
i can relate to him. he was a well known rider in mid school. my era. i snowboard and ride bmx all the time and i am 47 years old. i am a patriot. i love our country and our military. i love our freedom. i wear red white and blue and camo. i make bmx and snowboard videos. i can relate to this dude so much. what a great video.
Ik, dude's a legend but it kinda made me sad that he holds that in higher esteem than all the stuff he's done for kids & us old bastards that refuse to grow up..
I can understand Nate. I raced a local nascar track for a few years and it was better then any drug there could be. and when i won a race i was high for a week.
Still remember seeing the photo sequence of the gap he jumped from shed roof to shed roof in ride bmx mag back in like 2001/2002. That really blew my mind. It was a big sketchy gap that was going to be an ambulance or helicopter ride if he didn't land it. He had to haul ass across a parking lot and used the ground level angled roof on the first shed as a launch ramp to jump to the second angled roof with at least 20ft or more between them not knowing how the roof would throw him. True badass
Because Nate and Mat were big before RU-vid. We bought and copied VHS tapes to watch them, and we were buying magazines to hang these guys posters up on the wall.
