Yes, if the guy knows anything about grip releases, when he starts the technique you won't be able to let go because your fingers are wrapped inside the sleeve and you get your fingers broken.

I swear I thought Shintaro was at least 6 feet. That's a singular and quite clever grip, but I would feel guilty.

I'm not familiar with the rules of Judo and was wondering what the reason was for the rule. Just curious, as I feel like some rules are absolutely necessary (for example: not arching the neck back to prevent ippon) and I consider others to be an attempt to drive the direction of the sport (i.e. not allowing touching of the legs).
@sway71
@sway71 4 года назад
@Jay Lee Thank you! I'm always a little concerned when I see rules that have huge impacts on a martial art. Taekwondo caused the loss of countless techniques in Korea because the sport was designed around kicks, and Kyokushin used to be one of the most devastating martial arts in and out of the ring (they used to go to Thailand and beat Thai kickboxers) until the sport decided on making head punches illegal. Sometimes I think these rules can be helpful for protecting competitors, but I feel like more research needs to be done on the real effects. In the case of this grip, I feel like it should be illegal for lower level competitors (like leg locks in BJJ) or have a limitation like you mentioned to avoid stalling. However, as I used to be an EMT, I do think that the the neck arching to avoid ippon should be an automatic loss, only because it has no real word application and can be dangerous in both the short and long term. That being said, I've done several different TMA since I was a teenager, so I'm probably a bit biased haha :)

My position is that you cheat and hide from the referees because your not good enough to defeat the oponent and because you are not strong enough to accept that your technique is not there yet. So, you cheat and steal and life goes on. If you are in a street fight or to protect your life there's no problem to try to do lots of stuff, but when you are in a competition and you are expected to be fair play... well... if you cheat that's bad character from you. But everyone is free to do whatever they want to do :).

I hate it when judo idiots explain how unethical your behaviour is just because it's not exactly according to rules that change every 6 months. Challenging rules' limit, has always been part of competition judo. Even in Japan, where they're meant to be the cleanest judo players, competitors keep doing "nasty" forbidden stuff. Putting your fingers inside a gi is nothing bad or dangerous.

@macgyver1358
@macgyver1358 4 года назад
The other competitor raises his hand to show the faulty grip and he puts both his hands to put it back down... Two things can happen, first, the referee sees the grip and calls the shido, second, the other sends him flying across the tatami and wins the fight. If the other is a slow one, you can pull this once or twice. Not a good advice. Good judo is always better.

@jrmbayne
@jrmbayne 4 года назад
Just shido if you leave the fingers\thumb inside.if you twist enough is the inside becomes the outside and TECHNICALLY it's no longer a grip inside the sleeve as the end of the sleeve is inside out. Koreans are doing this last tweak some
@jrmbayne
@jrmbayne 4 года назад
@Jay Lee I've been doing judo since 2005 and was always told you cannot take a grip inside the gi. If you can cite your source on it being legal for the grip reprieve of 2017, I'd be happy to read the rules. Pistol grips were allowed during that time, but as I recall, not with fingers or thumb inside
@jrmbayne

@Jay Lee I've always been told fingers in is a safety issue. I do appreciate the citation. 👍

@@lauri6052 incorrect. Teaching illegal techniques for the sake of knowing them is one thing, teaching specifically how to apply them in competition without the ref realizing is purely a way to incentivize cheating. And I would expect more from a respected athlete.
