As I was preparing the boat for its initial shake down run I wanted to do some last minute fuel filtering of the port tank. I always felt as though that side has excessive water and issues. But I imagined that cycling some fuel through an external filter I would be able to clean it out. When I hooked up the external fuel pump to cycle the fuel from just before the engine drive pump and then back into the port fuel fill it was apparent I had high vacuum (restriction) on that side. After some basic troubleshooting it was quickly narrowed down to the pick up tube. That meant I had to get access to the INSIDE of the tank to figure out the blockage. This video documents all steps and parts used to add an access panel to your fuel tank. The only access panel I can recommend is the one that was recommended to me by many people in the know. The Sea Built access panels seen in the link from Fisheries Supply.

Its a long video. I kept it long just in case anyone had to do the same procedure and was hoping I covered all aspects of the job. Since it is so long I added markers in the timeline so you can find the section you need. Just hover over the timeline for a description of each section.

First video from you, high quality with proper level of details. Can't wait to see your watch list. I am sure I will find very relevant videos for my trawler! Thanks, subscription added. You should have way more subscribers!

Thanks Daniel. Much appreciated. These videos are to hopefully help the newer boat owners navigate some of the issues you may encounter with owning a larger boat. It can get quite expensive if you have to pay someone to do all your Mx. You can save thousands every year by learning basics and tackling these jobs.

All these videos are like a Master Class in maintaining and improving an aging trawler. Many, many thanks for taking the time to produce the valuable content. Also, very good editing which is often lacking on Tubes.

That's very nice of you to say. I often think the videos are not good enough. I have much to learn about the process of video making. But I always hope enough detail comes through to be helpful to others. Thanks a bunch.

Good job with that video. Have no problems with my tanks. But sure nice to have inspection ports.

It sure is. When I get a few other projects done I plan to do the other side. Being able to gain access to the pick up are should be a standard practice IMO.

I'm sure I need to do this as well. Great video. Can you link that pump you were using to suck out the last few gal of fuel into that bucket on the topside plz

It is in the description section. Its a basic Amazon diesel/oil pump. Works damn good too. I used it to transfer all the fuel in the port tank for leak checks and then back to stbd until even.

Wonder if that would leak over time. I don't usually see access ports on the side of a tank, usually only on the top. Not saying it's not uncommon though.

The type of access port is called Seabuilt and is rated to be installed in the sides of tanks below the fuel level. Its what all the professional tank companies typically use if thats the only way to get it. A properly designed and installed access panel will not leak over the long term. I work on aircraft for my day job and you might be surprised to find out fuel tank access is almost always on the BOTTOM of the wings and on some aircraft they can have dozens of access panels on the bottom of the wings that are a bit more engineered, but essentially the same thing. And airplane wings are subject to extreme temp differences, shock loads on landing, and flexing during take off and turbulence and maneuvering.

Do you have a pump that transfers fuel back and forth to each tank to keep things even?

I do have a pump and I could use it to transfer fuel. I have a 4 way selector valve for my return lines and individual selector valves to draw from either port/stbd tanks. With the fuel pump running a small amount of fuel is returned at the Perkins injector pump and a slightly larger amount returned at my Westerbeke generator. So if I got down in the engine bay and selected those valve appropriately and turned on the key switch I could transfer fuel from one side to another. But it takes HOURS to just transfer 50 gallons. I have done it. As a matter of fact thats how I did it after these repairs if I remember right. I would like to eventually make a separate transfer system that could operate much faster. It really would not be that hard to do.

Great video. I have a 1985 CHB, Senator 35 that is very similar to your vessel. I have learned a lot from your videos. My original steel tank has a single inspection port, centered, on the side of tank. I want to make 2 more inspection ports (far left and far right) to get to the other sides of the tank (2 baffles divide the tank into thirds). Have seen other videos where they make their own plate and backing. My question is about the backing half rings, and how the bolts are in them. Are the just loose in the half ring, or are they threaded into the ring? Did they use some kind of sealant so that diesel could not follow the threads to the outside? Concerned that diesel will travel from the head of the bolt along the threads, then out to the nut, and outside. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Great job on your videos.

Sorry I missed your comment. Yes, the backing ring has the studs pressed in with thread sealer. That and the gaskets are a very tight fit. Its the only access panel I know thats rated for side install that I know of.

@@mvintrigue-trawlerdiy1101 Thank you. I had the plate and inner ring made at a sheet metal shop. Had them weld around the bold heads so no possibility of diesel coming out via the threads. Thanks so much for your video - it gave me confidence to have these plates made.
