Today we work on the Traxxas MAXX Center Diff as it's just a continuation Part 2 of the original video where we took apart some things to expose all three diffs.

Yea, really the most detailed video out there. My son has been wanting to pull his Maxx apart and clean everything up and to check on everything. I had him watch these two video’s as he did it and just left him alone. After a couple of days he was done and everything was great. Thank you very much!

That's a tough one to answer and usually is just learned based upon experience as too many variables. You will be the driver and just need to determine based on your driving and what elements you drive in.

Very informative video. I am still deciding whether should I buy the Maxx, Outcast 4s or Granite as my first RC to get back to the hobby after more than 10 years out. These type of videos are the ones that I appreciate the most in order to made a decision on which I will be buying next month.

The MAXX out of the three is probably the more expensive BUT my wife as am I are very pleased with its durability. It is being touted as the traxxas flagship vehicle of 2019 going forward as of now.

@@rcguygarage Thanks for the prompt response. I am sold on the Maxx in regards to design, performance and durability departments, however, handling... I think for the price tag it should included what Traxxas calls the Widemaxx kit. That is really what is holding me back. Because of what I saw from videos from you, RCDriver, RazorRC and others is that the drive train seems bullet proof.

@@mrallende007 Without the wide maxx kit it causes you to DRIVE the maxx and later maybe after decide if you want or need the kit. Don't just assume that it's no good without it. When you are inexperienced it's actually good to have a tight smaller footprint truck to bash around and as your experience grows so will the MAXX. just my 2 cents

I have a lot of arrma stuff notorious 6s kraton 8s Mojave 6s infraction to name most but I absolutely love my maxxx and I added the wide kit and it is back to my top 3 favorite vehicle to run it’s the best all around bang for the buck fun and these videos just make it thst much better to see how amazing this machine REALLY is brother

i was also out of the hobby for ten years, coming from a nitro revo 3.3, savage, tmaxx 3.3, and jato.. i decided to get the maxx and have no regrets. thing is a tank, ive only broke a driveshaft so far and i launch that thing 15 feet in the air on the daily .

Thanks for the video! I was just wondering. the blob of silicone that you put back is in the diff is all brown/blackish. Isnt that dirt and grime buildup that got stuck in the silicone? would it be better to replenish it with fresh diff fluid/silicone?

The discoloration is the friction material of the gears and components. Similar to an oil change in automotive. No need to change at that point as the 20 mill still has more service life to give. It's like giving an oil change every 500 miles

Yes I have but not for the maxx though as I don't feel it needed it 20 million seems to be right where it needs to be.

Just got a Maxx! In general, how often should I be doing this? By this I mean how often should I at least take this apart and clean / maintain in order to make sure my Maxx is in tip top shape

It kinds depends on how much you run it, do you run in a clean environment or do you run in sand, water, mud. If you don't feel you run it daily or even weekly then either do it after a year or if that makes you too nervous to wait that long then do a partial break down and see how dirty things look as you work your way in there. If things don't look too bad then reassemble and wait a little longer. In time you'll get an idea how often you need to do it based on how you run your rig. I'm kinda busy these days so I'm good with annually, heck I could probably go even longer.

It's dependant on usage vs abusage but I believe it's somewhere between 15 and 20 packs

Does a centre diff come standard for the maxx? The way mine drives I can’t imagine it does.. On the Traxxas website it describes ‘Torque-Biasing Center Drive’ which I assume is it.. however that seems to be the trademark name for the Xmaxx replacement part rather than the accessory centre diff part for the maxx (which again confused me as it’s listed as an accessory and not replacement). Thanks in advance!

I know I'm a year late, but to access the center diff in an xmaxx, would it pretty much be the same steps? I've found some good vids on front/rear diff but none as well as this one to access the center diff on xmaxx.

Hey bud how hard is it to replace the upper bulk head which also hold the trans gear and what would be the best way to approach this to remove from top or bottom? Fairly new to rc and trying to learn

I know this is the diff , but I had my maxx my stock driveshaft got twisted , with the widemaxx kit on , is there anyway to avoid this ? Besides buying the aluminum widemaxx shafts ?

Everything that I'm about to say causes future problems but here you go. You can fill the Male side of axle to reduce twist. This will then put strain on the U-joint loops and it will also put a certain amount of stress elsewhere in the RC such as the wheel hexes and in the differentials. Traxxas definitely does do their homework in the design for a number of reasons 1 first and foremost being making money on upgrades. The axles are definitely considered a consumable part

Great vid as usual, I’d love to hear your opinion on center diff fluid weights. I serviced my maxx this weekend and tossed the 20m putty and went with 50k. What have I traded off? Should I do it over and go back to 20m? I also went with 50k up front and 10k rear, so any feedback is appreciated. I did this to reduce diff out / where one front corner lifts under WOT.

You will be possibly what's called diffing out your front by discarding that 20Mil and losing rear drive traction. But you have to start somewhere. Trial and error and learning is what it's all about. 🤙💯👊

You could use a ultra sonic cleaner I think but that might be expensive.
