Traxxas TRX-4 professional review 

I'd say you're spot on here. Been into RC since the 80's, sponsored racer late 80's into the 90's with my first crawler in the late 90's ( modded Clodbuster), and this is one of the most enjoyable RCs I've owned. Got mine a couple of weeks back and am having a blast! It's amazing what our RCs can do these days, and straight out of the box to boot. It's nice to see the interest and all the new drivers totally into my favorite hobby. Keep up the good work!

I think Traxxas has set the bar pretty high with this one, i really enjoy all the features it has to offer. Hoping Traxxas comes out with a "light package", i think it would really set it off. Another great video. Thanks

I really like the trail mode. When you start down the hill or rock, just use from a little to full break and you are going to have excellent holding power.

I remember watching this review 2 years ago maybe, When i decided to go with trx-4 Defender. Now i leave thumbs up here 👍🙂

This video is excellent, I'm teetering on the brink of entering a new aspect of the RC hobby, this Land Rover caught my eye and your review was the first I watched. nice video. I have done a unboxing of the truck and am only 3 months into the hobby. I was just letting everyone see the truck. You are definitely a pro. wish you got this out a week ago so I didn't burn out my servo on the rocks. lol. I'm one of the ones with the burned out servo. lol. had no idea, it was really my fault. thanks for the info. hopefully I can watch some of your videos and keep learning. live and learn. thanks.

Axial is my go to brand when it comes to crawling, but when traxxas released the trx4 i knew i should get one. And i got one, but i chose the tactical unit. It is lighter than the defender. When driving it felt like i was driving my traxxas summit. Overall it is an awesome rig.

Awesome little review. I forgot about Harley's teardown video. (Going to go watch it now) It kills me how many people bash on TRAXXAS. My first "hobby-grade" rig was a TRAXXAS Sledgehammer some 27 years ago. I really wouldn't mind having this TRX-4 as my second TRAXXAS rig.

And now you know why I like the brushed motor + 2-speed transmission setup in my scalers. ;) Yeah, if I were competing I'd go with the simplest possible solution, but brushed + 2-speed just feels good.

Love the truck, especially with a lower lighter body. I do wish they did a dig unit over the 2 speed. Brushless takes care of speed.

You are a modest individual . Your servo is the best on the market . Hands down .

Very nice review! I will be installing a Holmes Hobbies Puller Pro standard 2200 kv motor and Trailmaster BLE Pro ESC in my TRX within days, since it has already shipped. Looking forward to that combo. I currently have a Mamba X and 1900KV Castle motor in it which will be moving to my new Marlin Crawler. Also interesting that for this video you went all stock except for your servo running at 12 volts!

I bought 3 motors from this man. Two crawlmasters and a lower end 6 years ago and they all still run awesome. I have the crawlmasters in my Xr-10 and my friends hate me lol

Nice review. Just got mine yesterday. While all the features you mentioned are impressive, what I liked the most is steering angle. This thing can turn on a dime.

I like my trx4, except for when it breaks, which is nearly everytime i run it!!! 300 deep in replacement parts already:( expensive hobby but so much fun!!!!

Bought 2 of these today for 150.00 each. Unfortunately our local rc shop is closing and everything is a must go on sale.

I was expecting more from a ‘professional’ review as you got the models name wrong and no idea on the accuracy of the specifications of the controller. Love the Traxxas Land Rover though and it looks good going over your rocks with ease!

This is kinda cool. I started building 40" series crawlers 15 years ago and went on building scale rigs a few years after that and Holmes is a brand l started using ver early. The TorqueMaster was love at first sight, and l have had a few years with the rigs n the shelf now but you my man just made me thinking... The trx-4 looks very interesting wih its portal axles with lockers and a 2-speed. I compete with a 1:1 rig with portals so l can finally build a 1:10 version of that one. 🍻 Cheers Mr Holmes!

Great video! You get alot for your buck, but its over priced, and its gunna break more. İ dont like traxxis due toa previous traxxis i had. İ still like my SCX10 lll over this truck. İf you like it buy it. İm not a scale guy. Crewling is more important to me. Just my 2¢ worth.

Curious now that another 5 years has passed from when this video was released if you have found any appreciable differences in the body and how it affect crawling. I hear a lot about certain bodies being top heavy and wondered if you have found that to be true, too.

So if you plug the servo into the esc and not the receiver it will have more power? Or is there two plugs on the servo ?

What motor would u recommend John?

Hey John, great video and great rig! You’re mentioning at around 10:45 that a 540 motor will “burn out real fast” in the Bomber/Wraith. I’ve just ordered one of your 13T CrawlMaster Expert 540 motor for my RTR Bomber as it is recommended on your website and will be considering one for my Wraith down the track, they will be running with the stock AE-5 and AE-2 ESC’s. I know that the 13T Crawlmaster is rated closer to a 27T but it is still a 540 motor nonetheless just as the stock 35T that is in my Bomber at the moment, and I’m under the impression that a 35t will not burn out as fast as a 27t would. Should I go for a Traxxas 21T 550 motor for the Bomber and put the 13T Crawlmaster into my lighter scx10 or will it be fine in the Bomber? Cheers

What is a survo? Is it the moter? & having the steering turned 1 direction for long duration sucks up battery power? If so can u manually steer the wheels to take photos, without battery usage?

I love this video, great info, and very in depth. Only thing I must say, please please please get a different camera person. The shots are very close most of the time and need to be backed up alittle. Also, the exposure (I think that's the word? Haven't used a camera in awhile) was alittle low since the footage was pretty dark. Other than that, great video!

Question do you still have to pull the red wire out of the steering servo lead into the receiver

How does this one stand up to the axial sxc 10 II kit version? I will go for the sxc10 II kit version just because it is a kit version. Even if this is better. However, if this one was offered as a kit version I think I would go for this one. Thing is, I want to put the thing toghether with my kid, that is going to be half of the fun.

i noticed you said the 550 can is about perfect for this RC, well i swapped my motor out to the Tekin 45t HD motor. Do you think that motor will "burn" up? Should i go back to stock or go brushless?

All reviews of the TRX4 mention that the extra features add to the risk of failures, but are there any common issues with the extra servos failing? I don't think I've read anything about the lockers or trans failing.

I just started getting back into rc cars and crawlers look fun to me, i was just wondering what your would recommend for a newbie. Ive looked at every crawler between $200-500 and im just not sure if having a 2 speed transmission would be worth the price but its sounds cool to be able to have 2 gears and locking/unlocking differentials. I almost bought the trx-4 sport then i started looking at the $500 models. Was even looking at cheap crawlers on banggoods for $200.

Can I run the Trailmaster 550 45t motor in this my rig weighs around 9-10 lbs depending on battery, body & accessories I used to run 55t motors in all my rigs, I'm looking for more low speed than high speed. And high torque 👍 Biggest thing I'm looking for low temperatures ! I'm running 9t / 45t w/Hobbywing 1080 brushed my motor gets very hot after trailing 2 hours

Can you do a comparison between the axial scx10 ll and the traxxas trx4 ? My thought is that they are both very good, but more moving parts usually means more problems. I probably wouldn't keep it stock ie tires , motors and such. Any advice I haven't seen a real good comparison video yet ... thanks

hi iam new on this and this is my firts truck for crowling and i got a traxxas slach ultimate edition with the 3500 velunion motor from traxxas can i change that motor brushless to my new traxxas trx4 ore just live it like it is. is coz iam learnig more about this hobby and i really like this .

personally your motors are awesom. The vehicle I don't care for. Like you said so many little things that could break and in my opinion, this vehicle is not a good choice for someone getting into this. they should definitely choose axial. My main concern is that it's new and things will break. second the body..I can't wait till they stop putting these land-rover bodies on them. how about a 70s hard body pickup? Chevy dual shorted? Dodge camper special hardbody? the idea is great but I'm tired of seeing all these land rovers and gelandes

Good looking car. But i don't think this is really a crawler it is too top heavy and it is all made of plastics . Once you get it under load you will be popping drive shafts like there is no tomorrow. Have a look at Losi and you will notice how thinks are done. You are a good salesman but as you said the servo lasted only 15 minutes and you had to change it on day one. This really not made to last or crawl it is made to be driven on a trail .
