That sucks man BUT …you are helping a lot of people understand what can happen with these electronics. The fact that you posted this is a blessing if it prevents just one fire or mishap occurring to someone else. Thanks for posting REAL rc vids.
Ahh no worries I once killed a brand new crate 350 sbc. Unseasonably warm December day. I put water in the engine to check for leaks. That night the forecast called for the temperature to fall below freezing and so I removed hoses and drained radiator. I awoke the next day and went out to see water leaking from the block. Upon a closer look freeze plugs popped out, yay. I removed the engine and upon further inspection the water jackets were cracked as well. Bummer, my bad, duh. At least your turkey and ham was a win. I've scorched a turkey one thanksgiving as well. Thank God I haven't had a massive grease volcano. I just learned this year your suppose to turn off the burner before dropping the bird. 47 and still learning. Have a great and safe day Mr. M.
Damn dude, glad you didn’t get toasted, I’ve only had connectors melt, those venom Traxxas adapter plugs, luckily I’ve never had a meltdown. I nicked a battery one time with a pocket knife and had to throw it out the door, Roman candle in my back yard
Sorry for your loss Early.. my anxiety is such that every time I do anything with batteries or esc I grab both of them and set aside to triple check that I'm doing it correctly since I use 8mm bullets for most of my rigs . You kept a lot cooler than I would have.. and thanks for being an educator, even if it's not always the intended lesson
I just whipped out volt meter today to make sure I made series wire I made was correct . I only solderd one connector to Maxx 6 figured I just use adapter to run 8s , different for you knowing going in 8s rig , s@$$ happens
This happened to my friend on his zelos 36. Owner of our LHS accidently soldered a connector backwards on it. Luckily he was able to unplug it fast enough to not weld the connector to the battery.
Done the very same thing on one of my new Arrma 3s trucks, made a connector up to use batteries with different plugs on. Soldered the wires on the wrong way around, immediate smoke on a brand new esc.
Earl wth man!!! I literally came back to see the reply to my “you have all the problems” comment and now I see your ESC has gone up in flames lol (sorry not funny) I almost did this on my XLX2 ESC in my OUTCAST EXB. I know this sucks but just know you will help so many people by leaving this video up. Thanks for putting out the content and 🍻 to better luck.
Before you turned it on I thought I saw something wrong with the connectors. You’ve given me a very good lesson, although it was a bit expensive to teach
Im glad you kept that in the video ... mistakes happen to everyone in this hobby and the only way to help others learn is to show them ones you've made. I have almost done that before . luckily it was just the ESC and not the whole thing that went up
Round side is always 'ground', and flat is always 'positive'. I did something similar several years ago, but I've ONLY done it that one time. It was the first race kit I ever built...a TLR 22 5.0 DC...and using 5mm bullet connectors w/ batteries having inboard connection. On my fourth pack testing the buggy, not realizing the battery was upside-down, I accidentally connected the ESC backwards. Thankfully, Hobbywing replaced the ESC...no cost to me. Under 'normal' circumstances, they would have placed the fault on me (as I had caused the damage), and I would have probably had to purchase a new one...but, "luck" was on my side, as they actually discovered a manufacturing error, which led to my free replacement.
I just did that shit last week, wasn’t quite as bad, but the battery connector and ESC connector were burnt. Thanks for the video. Awesome learning experience!
Cant say I've ever done this, but I have learned through out my years that replacing stock electronics is not always the better way to go. I have a few trucks that I have kept electronics stock one of which is my X Maxx and in the 5 years I've had it I've only had one problem my pinion gear came loose once. My buddies have all changed out there electronics and seem to have constant problems. It's one of those trial and error things but I tend to give a little more credit to certain brands and I've had good luck so far trusting stock electronics. The XRT seems to be having many issues just like the X Maxx did when it came out. Some people bashing the Hell out of them with no problems while others break right out of the box. Also way to many aftermarket electronics to choose from, most of the time I don't know where to start. I've been happy with Castle Creations on the trucks I have replaced ESC and Motors on but if stock is working I stick to that
Yes I’ve had a few fire at work on cars catching fire with fuel leaks car battery exploded but the flare up could have popped the battery quick if I didn’t unplug them 💯🔥👍
Is it fire safety month already?!! 🔥J/K! I'm glad you and your home are ok!!👍 Thanks for showing us all what can happen and how FAST it can happen!!!💥Holy crap... Scary stuff! 😵💫
Well besides the ESC fireworks, I truly hope you and your family had a great turkey day! I love all your videos dude, always honest and upfront about everything. Cheers brotha!
Happy Thanksgiving Earl, this is why I stick to watching your content honest straight forward content. Happy your safe after the oops. Great content once again.
om gosh Earl ..thank goodness you ok ..sure glad that flame went out right away and did not last long ..also glad you didnt melt up the XRT in process ..we all been in situations like this..again glad you ok Bud 👍✌...wow that went up fast on that ESC
Dang Earl. That will make for a not so Happy Thanksgiving. That could happen to anyone i guess if you're not paying close attention. Glad you didn't get burned and didn't set off your lipo's.
Thank goodness that was not worse ...but shows it can happen and easy to overlook something. Now time to make an eBay listing for a slightly used ESC only one hole and slight smoke damage !
Man....I've done the exact same thing (more than once i might add) and I've been in this hobby since 88. But you said it, "everyone makes mistakes and you just gotta move on". That's a great attitude. This is why I use independent Y harnesses on everything but my speed cars.
@@williamnutting9369 that's what the video looks like to me. If I'm not mistaken, he even said he plugged it in backwards. The hobbywing escs are normally very good escs. what happened would ruin any esc.
@@TruggyDude thats awesome that he put it out there like that. I got mad respect for him for doing that and saying what he did wrong. I also have hobbywing esc 1 is a max 5 1100kv in my X-Maxx basher and 1 is a max 4 with a tp 1440kv motor in my xrt speed rig. I havent installed either bc of situations like this. Im also adding qs8 connections to both but ima pay a hobby shop in my area to do it bc i have a hard enough time keeping screw sizes and locations straight lol i have to put them in baggies and label like literally exactly where they go or the next day I'll forget lol
Nice to see you join the ESC MELTDOWN GANG 😱 Looks like EARL needs a RC GUY GARAGE " Team #not1pack t-shirt" to commemorate the fact of what just happened 😎
Whoa that was scary to see in person too. And that sucks I had my mistake putting the esc wires to the battery and was moving around and sparked. And fried the esc in a castle creations sidewinder micro 2 5300kv. Which I reordered it. I was excited to turn it on which I messed up bad.
Hey Earl! That's not the Smoke Show I was looking forward too Bro! I'm glad your okay and saved the truck from from total melt down or worse! Thanksgiving was just alittle more expensive then usual that's all!🤔 It looked like you had some Awesome grub to fall back on anyway! Thanks for showing it all like usual!🤔😉😯👍💯✔️📹👋👋👋👋
So glad it was just the ESC Earl we all know how much more worse this situation could have been.. wow...... I seen in the first vid as well what is the spray you use after you applied the glue to the power button?? 🤔. Thanks for showing ALL of the action again reminds us all these rc's just aren't toys. On an up note dinner looked delicious and happy Thanksgiving bro.
Damn man when I had my max 8 catch on fire it wasn’t my fault but I bet it still felt about the same way. Hated buying two of those dang things. Thanks for the honesty. You’ll think about it next time for sure
Damn brother...happy that nothing worse happened during this incident. Thank you for sharing the good, the bad and the ugly. This is what makes your channel "real" and why so many people tune in. Sorry about the monetary loss but again, happy it wasn't worse.
You were way more calm than I would have been. I'd have been at least cussing myself and probably just unplugged it and thrown it in the driveway for a while...... lol. Happens to the best of us. Happy that's all that was damaged.
Man that sucks but it is good nothing else happened like a lipo fire things like this happen sometimes like when you buy a 20$ wheel nut to loose 5 seconds in because you forgot to tighten it lol or have 2 of your tires going forward and 2 in reverse
Damn bro don't feel too bad as it happens. I can see being distracted or trying to rush can cause that to happen. Whenever soldering it takes me forever cause I spend so much time triple checking. Tough break but at least it was just some money lost and not your home or God forbid your family. Glad it wasn't as bad as it could've been. I also keep a fire extinguisher in my back room, my hobby room for charging lipos
Earl, sorry about your ESC going up in flames. A word of caution when programming a Hobbywing ESC. I found this out the hard way myself. The running modes printed on the programming card, are not all accurate. According to Hobbywing you have to go by the programming guide in their instruction manual. I found this out when I was trying to set up my Max5 ESC. I forgot the mode I was trying to set. But, the ESC would not respond. After contacting Hobbywing they explained that I have to go by the manual, not the modes on the card.
Really cool Earl...Great job in not editing out the fire mate. It just shows how easy it is to make mistakes. Thanks, I really enjoyed this. Take care bud. Jimbo, Australia.
ya that why i hate soldering for that mistake but glad you showed it all bro as some need the info since like you said we all forget keep your self safe bro between you an kev talbot the info is much much appreciated
I used that solder gun for 2o years but I bought one on Amazon for like 40 bucks with a station you can't beat it for the money gets alot hotter 800 degrees ..I feel better I'm not only one makes expensive mistakes 😆 what going do we always pay if take shortcuts oh I'm glad you just Said need smart card , I was trying use hw card and box messed up factory settings , like you said rebranded but spectrum and these companies always doing pritoratary stuff .
Yes I count the settings as the back of the card has 6 settings and 4 settings chart if it lights up the card should work if not maybe look at the owners manual chart and change them mine won’t even light up just dashes show up 🤔
Understand, we all have made mistakes 😔 At least you showed what happened. It was Thanksgiving and you fixed the xrt and I hope had a great Thanksgiving dinner .
I've had the worst luck with my max 6's. I've had two go up in flames only on 6s in my way under-geared Arrma Mojave. I think the moisture is tough on them here in Illinois (snow is too fun with the big trucks lol)
@@earlmoorhead5555 I agree i have the scorched inner liners and the mesh net that keeps 95% of the snow out. The original spektrum set up has been under water multiple times and still runs strong. Almost makes a guy mad 🤣
Well that proves It can happen to anyone bro!? Don’t beat yourself up about it Earl? “Happens to the best of us.” Ain’t just a saying my friend. Anyone that’s followed you for a while knows you take safety very seriously. Now that food!? MMMM!! That looked perfect! 👌 Thank you so much for sharing. Hope it was a great thanksgiving sir. 🍻
Most Unfortunate that earl, dam shame, but we are all only human and make mistakes. I fried the ESC on me felony 6s 😬 had the spectrum programer plugged in and wanted to see what the batteries were like, without disconnecting the card from the esc and put the battery leading wrong way, pooooof. Smoked it . Was about 200 quid and upgrade to 8s.
✌🏻😎🏴That sucks. Thanks for sharing Earl. That would have made me run out of my house like a little girl 😂. I can’t smell any electrical smoke, I think I can smell toast though but I may have a tumour because nobody is actually toasting anything 😂. I honestly didn’t know what you done until you actually pointed it out to me. Seriously, Even when you said “I should have noticed the issue here”. I still couldn’t see the issue.
I reversed the 5mm battery pinns on my hw xr10 g2 luckyli it has reverse polarity protection the cap pack doesnt. Cost me like 20 to put in the reverse polarity proof cap pack from hw. I felt like an idiot too. They shpuld all make the reverse polaritu proof... try to have a look if its only the capacitors...
