Traynor YGM3 amp mod Part 3

Some simple tweaks to a Traynor ygm 3 result in some pretty good tone. At around 20 watts these amps make the prefect club, rehearsal, studio or gigging amp. The low power allows you to crank the amp at a reasonable volume and achieve a BIG AMP Grind with the need for attenuation. The amp takes pedals very well and it completely touch sensitive and responsive. It's a complete hoot to play. The modded YGM3 made its debute at our most recent gig and performed amazingly well. We stuck with the original Marsland speaker and it sounds great with the tweaks ... If we wanted more volume we might switch to a havier magnet speaker, but the goal is live volume control, without sacrificing TONE. Look to the 3am and Take it easy 2009 clips to hear the amp in action. Most of the night my "overdrive" was my guitars volume control.

I've got a Traynor 300 Power Amp ready for disemboweling. Going to try to make a Frankenamp. Between these vids, D-Lab, and a bunch of books I done read, should be able to come up with something. Many thanks

Yes 100% reliable ... the biggest concern is with modern el84's some are very bad In the reissue they bumped the first power supply resistor to 1.8k, this also serves as the creen grid resistor ... I have now done this on all my old ones I use Red Fang or EVM speakers in my gigging YGM's & they smoke most 50 watt amps

Oh yes also added a 10k bias adjust over a 15k for R39 Matched JJ El84 replacing unknown vintage Mullards. May also try matched TADs later. Sovtek 12ax7s and a nice Mullard for V1. All tubes were working, but best to have a good reference first, before returning them. Only weak part is the reverb 'clanks' in use. I have a Marshal tank and Fender coupling trans and might try that out. Reverb is barely listenable now.

Only the filter caps? If those are the only two that need to be replaced, I will do it tomorrow. Thank you for being so helpful. Other sites make it such a mystery, beating around the bush about safety, and you are straight forward, spreading the knowledge. Way to go!

yes higher voltage is no problem also you can use any value from .02 to 500pf ... 500pf will give more of an ac30 chimey sound but any of them will work

I don’t see where you modded the tone stack. Is that part in any of the videos?

I just bought a vintage traynor. I really enjoy it's tone, but feel a few minor mods could tighten it up to be the beast that it is. Thank you for all of the post. Your videos give me everything i am looking for. Keep your posting format exactly the same. Congrats on a job well done

I found one of these on the island with some hack job mods and a Rola Celestian. Yanked the idiot mods, swapped in a new Celestian G12 Heritage, and have done most of your mods as shown. Finally I found a lost Mojo Vit. T .01 and put that in before the tone stack, really perked things up. A 102k replaced the fizzy, and presence cap long gone. I do have a 150uf cath cap on V1b, and that screams, but might go back to a 50uf. Thanks, cool stuff. I'll gig it out tomorrow.

Wade will make you a set of these but they are only for the hard core gretsch and Fender fans... all my live humbucking guitars use 6.3k to 7.0k neck pickups and 7.2k to 8.0k bridge pickups... the lower k you can live with on the neck pickup the bigger your neck pickup tone will be ... on my #1 strat the neck pickup is 5.4k ... this works brilliantly when your amp is very beefy like these old traynors or vintage fenders and marshalls
@patfurlan
@patfurlan 11 лет назад
not sure what to think I use a tele all the time and have no problems getting distortion from this amp. I also have custom made humbuckers made for me by Wade at Motor City Pickups... the Blackbelt 2 is one we worked out together to be on the cleaner side of the humbucking spectrum... based on a buddies 59 lp ... then I had him make me a bunch of special pickups as low as 6.3k in a humbucking.. and they sound brilliant, but most people would NOT get it ...

So a capacitor at the inventor and a resistor at the tone stack? Thanks again for the notes. I appreciate it. Rob

I am more familiar with the classical Fender/marshall TMB tonstack, and the vox top boost tonestack, in regards the effect of their placement in the chain, and their center point of the mid dip. Blackface Fenders mids scoop at ~500hz and the VOX topboost scoopes higher at ~900 Hz. THe marshall and its father the bassman has a cathode follower tonestack with more gain stages in front of it and more mids intact. The traynors YCV series use a blackface type but their "Baxandall" is unknown for me

You can use 120pf 47 pf or 300pf ... personally I use 120pf in series with a resistor 100k or 220k

Pat, My Traynor is in the shop for servicing and scheduled to have the upgrades in your 3 videos. The repairman needs to know the value of the resistor you added last to the tone stack....you just stated a higher value. He needs the exact value. Thanks, Rob
@patfurlan
@patfurlan 9 лет назад
wc ray the only resistor changes are 4.7 k in the feedback loop swapped to 2.2k or 3.3k to taste at one point I played with changing the 47k resistors in the tone stack trying 100k but after doing a number of amps concluded that this was not important ... of more importance is to swap the .0056 or .0047 or .01 pull down bass cap to .01 or .02 if you want clearer bass and a more fender like tone, looking at the schematic c5 is very influential and I now use .01 or .02 it feeds both the next stage and bass cut control so a large value adds more sweep c6 should be .01 per the schematic though .02 is cleaner still .0056 as used in some gets more dirt .... if the amp is still too dark r9 becomes 100k (but I use the c6 to .02 change instead now) I've done quite a few of these and they are all slightly different and may not be significant changes compared to the #1 removing c11 #2 lowering the screen filtering & upping the choke resistor to 2k #3 changing c1 from .1 to .02 or .01

@freshcaughtbass if volume is very low you may have a bad coupling cap leaking DC ... although 99% of the time Tubes are the cause of tube amp troubles

@tubeamplification I suspect a screw up as I have never seen that Value ... if you want contact Yorkvile they are always super helpful, but if it was not in any of the schematics they may be stumped too the clue that its a screw up is the color code that purple 7 stands out

Enjoyed the 3 part traynor mod videos. Could you discuss with me the 2 last tweaks you did at the end of video 3? A capacitor was added in the power stage then one in the tone stack!? I appreciate it. Rob
@patfurlan
@patfurlan 9 лет назад
wc ray there is a 47pf suppression cap across the back half of the inverter...it can be changed to 100pf or 100pf can be added right over top ... this may not do much unless you have too much fizz ... in the tone stack there is a .01 or .0056 that pulls down to ground ... changing it to .02 cleans up the lower mids by pulling some mid bass out

are you referring to filter caps ? those are the big things that look like sticks of dynamite they are dual 40mfd at 500 volts I replace them with F&t Or JJ 32/32 or 50/50

Hi pat.. I see you have the traynor darkhorse: I looked at the schematic (available on their website). Do your hear a big difference between the darkhorse in US setting and the ygm3. They both have the traynor "Baxandall" tonestack, allthough the darkhorse have a 470pf bright cap bypassing the gain control, and slightly altered values like 100k TB pots instead of 500k pots. The Darkhorse is a non-NFB cathode biased 6v6 stage, and the ygm3 a fixed bias EL84 stage with NFB and a presence cap.

What speaker is in your amp? Mine came with a Fane that's probably ceramic judging by the weight. The odd thing is the speaker frame is chromed. I can't get over how quite these are considering the long wire runs and not one piece of co-axial wire to be found.. Do you feel those resettable fuses Traynor used are reliable?
@dancingrizz

It seems to me like your pick noise went up with almost every mod until the last one. Not a bad thing as the amp sounds great.

If I wanted to tame the treble boost, has anyone got suggestions about what value of a cap I should use? I find it a bit sharp, especially when a mic is in front of the speaker.

higher or lower .... 410v is from memory i may be wrong
@gazriff8337
@gazriff8337 11 лет назад
If I change cap, that changes the frequency cut off. If I use a cap and resistor in series that changes the amount of boost. Is this correct. I'll go with the 120pf and resistor
@patfurlan
@patfurlan 11 лет назад
no simply replace the power tubes with good quailty JJel84's if you have anything done have your tech change the choke resistor that feeds the screens from 470ohm to 2k 2 watt this will do more to make the power tubes happy and protect them than playing around with the bias 99% of the poor sounding amps I see have had people messing with the bias ...

Hi Pat: That's very informative. Thanks, I will be doing it in my YGM-3. What capacitors need to be changed to solid state on those amps (because of leakage)? Could you post, or send me a picture of the board with the caps circled/highlighted and value of them? Yes, I know how to stay safe while working on it. =;-) Thanks, Eric

Great vids thanks for posting. I have this amp too. A 1977. The thing stays clean almost all the way up the dial. It actually has too much clean headroom for me and I'm not sure why. I did have to change the marsland speaker as it has some voice coil rubbing happening. I have a 75 w celestian in it and I guess that doesn't help the headroom thing. I don't mind doing a little snipping and soldering but I'm not about to because I don't know how to discharge the caps and I like living lol. Do you so these mods for other folks? If so what do you charge. Cheers. Great playing btw!
@patfurlan
@patfurlan 10 лет назад
the headroom is related to the power supply caps.... I lower the pre amp ones a little in value to soften the amp up
@patfurlan
@patfurlan 9 лет назад
***** to get better power amp "distortion" raise the choke/ screen resistor from 470 ohm to 2k or 5k if you want a real grindy old school low wattage tone AND reduce the screen filter cap from 40mfd to any value as low as 8mfd ... a 5k choke and 8mfd filter will get you some loose tweed deluxe hot sauce

Hi. Do you know where I can find a good layout for a 1972 ygm2 so I can locate the components you referred to that have a "C" and a number. I've done the first 2 mods (1st coupling cap and Presence cap) but would like to achieve the tone yours has in this video. I also swapped the Marsland speaker for a Warehouse ET-65 speaker (celestion G12-65 copy) and changed power tubes which helped a bit but it still seems to get flubby when I turn it up. Almost no gain...nothing anywhere near what yours sounds like. Wondering if I should recap it too since the two Mallories seem to be original. Thanks!

looking at the ygm1 schematic the amp has a 100k plate load resistor for v1 and v2 has no cathode bypass cap change the resistor to 220k and add a 25m/25 volt bypass cap & it will pick up some gain

just got ahold of one of these; it is very clean but it has a major issue: the sound is squashed/compressed/clipped on the peaks, and it gets worse as volume goes up. sounds like a ratty torn speaker, but it is not(i confirmed that). also it is not a tube issue. it looks like the NFB capacitor was snipped out, and also a boutique lower value cap (Auricap 0.01uF) was installed in 1st interstage coupling capacitor position, just like you did in this video

@shawnmazzei4331
@shawnmazzei4331 5 лет назад
patfurlan it really truly doesn’t break up until it’s on like 8-10 ish. Your mods made that breakup way more musical however I still can’t get good lower volume break up. It’s stiff and stuffy (foggy sounding lacking character.) filter caps are replaced. Maybe a tube thing? Still has original tubes

Shawn Mazzei get the schematic and go through it 100%. You will find a wrong part or voltage way off. A mod, factory error or old bad repair. Obviously you can ignore the bits you modded, but double and triple check that work.
