I know that my '05 Sienna Limited 3.3 vvt-i minivan 240hp has racing inspired performance requested by the chief Japanese designer at the time. Thank you past Toyota💙
Naruse is one of the reasons why Toyota got back to racing and he was part of Gazoo racing along with Toyoda which they started together. Gazoo is part of his legacy.
@@albonfilms Albo, isn't TRD still very active in the USA with Nascar, Formula drift and various offroad activities? I would say its still very much alive here, since Toyota USA hates the "gazoo racing" name. I think this video is a little misleading
@@ciello___8307 great,i hate the gazoo name, unfortunately we got bugger all TRD models in Australia if any at all. As soon as i souped up my imported surf with better suspension and engine mods i stuck TRD 4x4 offroad stickers on it and TRD windscreen sunshade and badges on it. Looks better than gazoo poo,and everyone says so too.
@@basithph8958 I love Toyota and am a fan for their sheer reliability (Camrys get way too much hate for being "boring" imo), but their future Gazoo Racing plans look promising. It's honestly refreshing to see them go for more fun and performance based vehicles for people that want engaging cars, like the GR Yaris (which I still think is a crying shame for the fact that it's not being released in the U.S.). There's definitely a market for fun rear wheel drive and rally cars, and I hope Toyota sets a precedent for it and expands on it.
Check out neutral drop, they were just as small maybe a month ago. Another car channel but... Of a different type. Think you other car dudes would enjoy it
TRD is alive and doing well, just not the street sports parts we saw in the 90's. TRD USA is primarily focused on supplying engines to NASCAR Cup Series since 2007, and has won several manufacturer's and driver's championships. You failed to also bring up TRD's open wheel history, with Toyota winning the 2002 CART Championship, taking the Indy 500 and the IRL Championship in 2003. I'm proud to say I've worked for TRD USA since 1998 and we've only evolved with every new venture. We are far from gone in motorsports... but street superchargers are no longer our priority.
How could one go about getting a job with TRD? I'm in the Army currently but don't plan on staying in and working for a company like TRD would be the dream.
@@mentals555 back in March of 1998, I literally just dropped off a resume at the front desk. 6 months later, I got the call. People say when you love your job, you don't work a day in your life. It's been an awesome 23 years so far
@@musskeeterbump yup, that's our chassis development facility. It also houses our state of the art driving simulator that our teams use to setup their chassis
When your CEO ditches you and starts his own brand of racing aside from the company in which was named after his family name, should say everything about your job in terms of the confidence he has in you.
Not only that but how companies work, with so much administration and focus on profit, this entitys became an afthertough, and akio being raicing enthusiast knew that if they wanted to put sports cars again they needed a leaner, secret team away from the corporativism, no company would make a Gr yaris competitor as toyota did, completley from the ground up, expensive materiars, awesome engine, lightweight drivetrain, coupe form, price at a resoable price but with more punch that whats spected
Yes, the true "TRD" is already dead. But the sadder thing is, In Indonesia, Toyota still sell some cars and accessories with "TRD Sportivo" Badging and most of them are only cosmetic changes, does not improve any performances. So Indonesian Toyota dealers just sell riced out cars from factory.

The Vios GRS, looks a meme for me. And one Guy tries to defend the GRS Vios (despite it has some changes in suspension,10-speed CVT with pad del shifter, exterior looks), it’s completely a joke and nothing near with a race car counterpart.
That is in the US too. The last thing TRD did here was the Tundra supercharger from factory. They ended that a while ago. Now its all for trucks and suspension.
@@Joolz1982 I watch them too. Sometimes the odd pronunciations (like HRSPRS) and screaming make it a bit distracting. This was so calm and to the point.
this was a donut media level video in terms of story telling, editing, research, presentation, and even music. amazing video bro you really deserve more recognition!
I've loved Gazoo Racing since they started racing their cars a few years back, but I had no idea their history was so rich. This is an awesome video, great job man.
Awesome video, very informative. Japanese automobile companies use to change their sub-brand names time to time. To me, TRD is just another page of the history book, and GR is the opening of the new chapter.
that's intelligent of your part, i didn't know how to put it in words (at least not in english lol), but for me the GR division is THE new TRD, with upgrades over regular vehicles as well as original creations for motorsports
Blame government and epa standards with not wanting “ unsafe” cars or cars that put out too much emissions, they want everyone driving the same boring stock economy car. Suspension mods are deemed unsafe and power mods are deemed to put out too much emissions over the stock variant
This video made me cry in so many ways. The fact that I own 2013 FR-S (86) and I know it was one of two cars which re-stimulated the fun back into Toyota and the passion people in the company have.
In this category of car content, Albon you are second to none. Japanese motorsport teams like TRD/GR and NISMO to name a few have a special place in my heart. The underdogs that go onto completely dominating all classes and segments they enter. This is definitely worth a re-watch in my books; keep up the great content as always! When the pandemic is over, I hope to bump into you if you're ever in Japan again :)
The quality of every video this channel puts out is beyond impressive. It’s like a more serious donut media. Keep it up, I’m looking forward to seeing that subscriber count climb
@@danielcluley870 yes, TRD still competes in NASCAR winning the 2015 cup series championship with Kyle Busch the 2017 cup series championship with Martin Truex Jr and the 2019 cup series championship with Kyle Busch not to mention TRD's Daytona 500 wins all with Denny Hamlin in 2016 2019 and 2020. TRD are also top Competitors in the Nascar Xfinity series and truck series winning dozens of races and countless championships with multiple drivers.
@@jessicataylor4071 Thank you! I love TRD and Toyota in general. What they do for performance and also safety in their lower price bracket cars are a benefit to humanity.
Toyota ALTEZZA need in reboot like to car in GR ALTEZZA .New Lexus IS this like to Crown, but not like to Altezza or toyota jzx. For me ALTEZZA this legend car too, like to Toyota JZX. In 90-X Toyota created legends toyota sports sedan, ALTEZZA, MARK II, Chaser, Cresta, Aristo, Verossya, they cars need reboot now.
In the South East Asian and some related markets, Toyota even have another division of TRD, the TRD Sportivo. They made additional bodykits and small accessories like carpets, mudflaps, fuel cap, for their economy cars on this market.
I think those 2 things are very different. While TRD producing more like performance part based on Japan, TRD sportivo (regional based) made only oem package such as bodykit and emblem.
@@CorollaChronicles their decision though has nothing to do with what it sounds like. Lol. From what sources say a lot of Toyota inside people prefer TRD over GR. GR is Akios brainchild. But either way it’s cool, I’m glad Toyota is still doing big things with Motorsport.
@@MaddNomad1015 Toyota USA doesn't like the Gazoo racing name since it is very japanese, and TRD USA still does nascar, offroading, etc. It is a very confusing relationship between TRD and GR right now.
@@ciello___8307, they don’t like that a Japanese auto manufacturer named the racing division something that sounds Japanese? Dumb as shit but not surprised
Nicely done commentary. I worked at Toyota Racing Development in Costa Mesa CA. from '95-'03. That was the heyday here in the US. We built all the race engines for Toyota and developed all the street performance kits like superchargers, suspension, exhaust, etc. Went to all the CART races, and the SEMA shows. Was fortunate enough to meet all the drivers such as Ivan Stewart, Rod Millen and even Dan Gurney. I had a supercharger, suspension and body kit on every car and truck I drove those 8 years. It was the best job any car guy could have asked for. Let's hope TRD isn't dead yet.
I have a Pontiac Vibe (Matrix with a Pontiac styled exterior and built by NUMMI in Freemont California). I started wanting to do something to it, and found that Hellwig no longer made anti-sway bars for it, however the TRD kits for the Corolla (which were actually Hellwig parts) was still available, and since the Corolla and Matrix (and Vibe, and Geo/Chev Prizim) all share the same platform, the bars fit. I added those and a bar that spans the top of the shock towers. That was TRD's contribution to my car.
I loved my TRD Matrix. It was hilariously underpowered and loved to drift on dirt and snow with little speed required. Going up a lengthy hill I had to take the truck climbing lanes in 3rd gear being passed by said trucks.
This is one of the most Thorough videos Ive ever seen on the TRD history and heritage.Take it or Leave it, put it all out there. I really enjoyed it. Subscribed.
Bet many Toyota enthusiasts don’t remember the 1988-91 Camry AllTrac(full time 4WD) sedan. Super rare and with the appropriate TRD goodies it would’ve been like having an All-Trac Celica with four doors!
Just brilliant! What a fabulous mini doco & overview of a legendary team and company. Hats off to you for compiling so much engaging information into a mere 23 minutes. Respect! 🙏🏻
TRD is only dead if you're a supra loving fan boy. TRD is transitioning itself towards the overlanding, rock crawling, off road trail driving side of life.
Potentially! But of course, brand consolidation may eventually take over every division. It's difficult for dealers to explain to customers what all the different acronyms are across all the models in their range. So consolidation like this happens to unify branding from development down to consumer.
Ah yes, the first thing I think of when I hear the word "racing" - a truck given a 1 foot lift and adorned with a bull bar and rally lights slowly climbing a rock wall.
@@angrytigermpc TRD did a 1400 class build to a 4Runner and ran Baja with it soooo idk where you live or what you consider off roading but here in Arizona bull bars are on vehicles that mall crawl or pound pavement LOL
Well made quality video. Good job with editing, seems well researched with a well constructed script. And good narration, from a very listenable voice. Thanks for the video.
@Albon I don't know I think your wrong see TRD is still alive and well in Japan and Asia in fact Super GT cars are all built and by TRD they help teams run the Super GT cars they also help out customers throughout Japan and help with racing operations across Asia TRD handle the Lexus RCF GT3 cars and support internationally as well in Japan before they're sent of to private teams for competition so I'd say your point of TRD being dead only counts for Europe, North America and South America TRD is still alive and Kicking in Japan like an old Japanese Retired Sensei.
Very true, TRD Japan is still the most lively of the group, but with the rate that Gazoo is taking over every medium of motorsports, I feel it is only a matter of time before GR becomes the singular brand identity.
Working for a US Toyota dealer as a tech for 20 years there has never been more TRD vehicle trim packages available. 4 runners have several levels now, Tacoma, tundra, sequoia, Camry, Avalon. Sadly not as many performance part add ons but I think more popular then ever with the average customer
I think this guy don't know that T.R.D still one of the best racing engines builders, in the nascar cup I work for T.R.D in costa mesa and I'm very proud of it!!
Thank you for the content and the well researched information! Even your Supra video was incredibly informative! I've always been a huge Toyota fan since my dad had a company landcruiser J70 back in Dubai. I will never forget the embossed Landcruiser letters on that truck. Almost two decades later I now own 3 Lexus's that still have the same commitment to quality and excellence I observed as a child. In business school I studied Toyota's production processes, logistics methodologies and approaches to build and design. Suffice to say over the years I've learned so much from their approach to quality and study of efficiency at each level. They have built a system around ensuring efficiency with fault tolerance, and still do not observe planned obsolescence within the build parameters of their vehicles. Its exceptionally challenging to ensure a steady level of quality within a manufacturer's line up over this much time and yet with effective practices and adherence to strict quality they've managed it. Not trying to get philosophical but Toyota has a book on TPS (Toyota Production System) that is well worth the read. Really being able to apply that system to your own work flows in life increases efficiency tenfold. Its well worth understanding how one can engineer every facet of a process. When the system works well and can be fault tolerant, the natural tendency will always be to return to center and self correct even in the worst times. Applying that to daily chores, home management, vehicle repairs, working out, eating, and more in life leaves one with a lot more mental bandwidth. Continuous improvement only works if one observes, attempts, fails, reflects, learn, then improve.
As an employee of TRD USA YOU SIR ARE DEAD WRONG IN YOUR FINAL MINUTE CONCLUSION. TRD is still alive and well and does racing all across america from the three nascar racings series' to NHRA to midgit racers and everything in between. A simple look at Toyota racing on instagram would prove what I am saying. TRD and Gazoo racing will be living in harmony for years to come as TRD will be the brand of north america with the GR here and there on production cars. TRD from a production sense will be mainly in the off road market mainly because of how strong it is. I can keep going but I will stop there. Great history in the video but very wrong on your take of it all.
On boy. I had to watch the video a couple of times. There's a lot of good info in here. A lot of deep cuts i didn't know. Another great video. Very entertaining. This will def be one of my go-to vids to rewatch. Thanks another one. Keep them coming.
Might not have been the Y-49 curse but I knew what was going to happen when that piano music came on while you said “he took his YELLOW LFA...” R.I.P Naruse
Great video, Toyota then, now and forever! Had to subscribe. Gonna share now. I'm a Toyota person forever. GR is greatness. I personally think 2026 Toyota Gonna build there own Supra's and build a 3.8 litre engine called the 3JZ😁👍 2JZ the god👑of all engines💥
I wish they brought back the supercharger kits which gave some decent performance to the camry and the suvs/trucks. Even if it was just 40-60hp on autos it was a noticeable mod.
Really good well prepared content... it seems i can t ignore any of ur videos anymore... this was a great and informative video abt the development of Toyota s racing division throughout the years... keep it up guys!
Great video , but you have downplayed what TRD has been doing in the late 2000s and forgotten that TRD offered supercharger kits for the Tacoma and Tundra. While TRD Australia released the TRD aurion which was the worlds first production car to have a supercharger with the new at the time Eaton Tvs rotor group produced by Harrop Engineering in Australia.
Thanks a lot for this video. i learnt so much about toyota that i didn't know - very informative and good production style. I'm currently for the first time doing up my 2013 toyota etios, with a TRD body kit and was trying to find a good video about the history of TRD and engines and how they went about their racing and you nailed it. Keep it up!
Great vid, The only thing I thought you may include other than “pretty much everything else” 😉 was the TRD Hilux and Aurion from Australia released around 2008-09. Both with water inter cooled, supercharged V6’s, Bilstien suspension, bigger brakes, leather interior etc. I had an 08 TRD Hilux, with TRD plate 247 and it was heaps of fun. Keep up the great work 😄✌️
Had a TRD Supercharger on my 94 Camry V6 (same engine as the 97-01) and it was a blast. Gave a much needed push to the 3L. It also had TRD strut tower, sway bars and lip kit. From a time when TRD was giving power bolt-ons to their cars
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!! One of the best documentaries I have ever watched. Gave me chills at the part where the race-dirty LFA racecar lives in the Toyota museum - with Hiromu Naruse watching over it . . . . . And what a fantastic motto: “There will be no progress if you fear failure“
Its very hard for companies like TRD to make "performance" add ons when the cars they sell have to meet stricter and stricter emission regulation. therefore suspension, brakes and visual modifications are easier to sell for the cost of development
Why would anyone give this video a thumbs down? Great information on one of Japan's leading auto manufacturers. How I would love to have that beautiful 2000 GT. Now on to the Datsun/Nissan 240Z, successor to the 1600 and 2000 roadsters back in the 1960s. I had the 2000, super fun car to have and drive in the mountains of Northern California.
That was a good documentary, but TRD is certainly not dead. There are TRD packages for 8 different Toyota models in the US alone, and as the creator said they are still racing in NASCAR, NHRA and U.S. Rally. I do agree that they are not the TRD they used to be, but like how Honda races HPD domestically, and technically Mugen internationally. I think Toyota should keep TRD as an American product because of the strong brand heritage here, and give GR the international spotlight. Whatever they do I just hope they run a factory Baja program again.
The quality of your content is outstanding. I’m a big fan of Akio Toyoda, he really gets the enthusiast spirit Toyota gave us back in the 80s and 90s and he’s a true car guy and a legend. I’m happy Toyota is finding its groove back.
Came apon this vido by coincedance and oh My! What a video it is! Such a beautyfull insight into TRD and Toyota racing history! What an amazing video and channel! Cant beleave Ive never seen it before! Subscribed!!!
Great video. Loved it start to finish. I just wish to point out that the Mark X has less in common with the Camry. They (and the Mark II before them) are rear wheel drive platform, and the older ones were available with JZ engines (think supra, Lexus IS). Those are NOT Camry configurations. For those old enough to remember the Cressida, they lived on in Japan despite being cut from the US lineup. That is the Mark X of today.
