Can someone explain the point of purchasing a TRD Pro, which is an off-road suspension package, then taking it to a shop and have all of those special components removed and replacing them with all new/different components?
Forget just an overland rig, this might be the coolest (and most useful) truck on the road. This was one of the best videos I've seen on RU-vid in a while. One thing though - get that dog a nicer cage! lol
wow...this guy utilized every available inch of space...and it is seamless and efficient....I know people say there's always room for improvement, but it would be very difficult to improve the setup of this rig...absolutely immaculate rig..
The overuse of the word "rig" with regard to these vehicles cracks me up. Why's it a "rig" and not just a vehicle? Because you bought a bunch of stuff for it?
Hey Erich, growing up in Humboldt County, my family had a logging company in the Willits area. We began referring to any logging truck or yarder on a landing with a lot of rigging, rigs. When I say, "we began", I'm referring to the generations of loggers in my family growing up outdoors, working (not just me and my friends). I naturally started to refer to my rig, as a rig, because of the amount of hardware and well...rigging, on the vehicle. I'm certainly not trying to cause any confusion. I still think it is an appropriate title. It's closer to the rigs we used in the woods than a standard pickup.

Why didn't you go with the land cruiser? Besides the price.. I mean if I'm gonna throw on that much weight and equipment and money why not the land cruiser
So confused as to why he bothered dropping the extra 6-7 grand on the TRD-PRO if he was going to strip everything that package has to offer off of it and do his own thing...could have got an SR5 or a TRAIL if he wanted the crawl features and done all of this at lesser cost
Im having a hard time trying to figure something out. Its either like taking my wife with all of her luggage on vacation, or the person who buys all the bread and milk, boards up the windows and the hurricane doesn't ever come close to your house.
And the best part is, if you're not into this sort of thing, from the outside you'd think this guy is a doomsday psychopath and wouldn't bat another eye at his rig. Sweet stuff but holy moly that build cost.
Jeff Pacheco As someone who has crated his dog since day one on the road, safety is unparalleled. I protect my fuzzy family member, and honestly she really enjoys being in the crate (as far as I can tell). Even if I leave the door open (it has one facing the front seats) she'll come out and then when the car moves she'll head on back in and pass out. It's all a matter of perspective....
To some people a dog is just a dog, a wife is just a wife, kids are just a result of copulation, life is simpler for some people, besides it keeps his fancy off roader clean and tidy for Costco runs and showing off to his boyfriends
That Xventure trailer is the best! I’ve had mine over some very tough off-road tracks. Find more reasons to like my Xventure XV3 every Overlanding trip. Made in USA! @muddyruttzz
This is the best looking front bumper I have yet to see for this gen of 4runner. If anyone has a suggestion for better I would like to see. Have a friend that has a 2014.
I just put a Magnuson supercharger on my new 4runner, and when people ask my favorite, or best overland mod, i always say the supercharger.. I transforms the 4Runne to what it was meant to be.. I now dino at basically 350hp to the tires (almost 100hp gained).. I can now pass on highways, even when fully loaded for overlanding, and can do technical rock crawling and get over obstacles at lower RPMs, so it has made my average MPG better.. It only increases MPGG used uf you have a heavy boot.. I highly recommend it to anyone with 6 grand to spend on an engine mod... Magnuson and TRD made it together, so it bolts on and aside from need minor calibration, your rigs computer knows what to do when it's plugged in, and requires no other mods Edit: Why spend extra on the TRD Pro if you were modding it?.. I went with the TRD Off Road for the KDSS and bought the Pro grill myself lol.. I saved a lot of money
Bryce Anderson This setup is cool when money is no option. You can easily set your 4x4 up for overland travel and easily stay out for a month no problem. I can pack my Adventure touring motorcycle and stay out for a few weeks easily, so you don't need all this gear to enjoy a great over landing trip!
I don"t understand these vehicles. I don't understand overlanding. my 86 excab has 80 series Land Cruiser axles(won tons), 40s, dual cases, and a cage. It doesnt need anything else. The goal is simplicity, lightweight, strength. I feel like these overlanding vehicles are the exact opposite.
What don't you understand. These vehicles are designed for extended off highway trips. You have a rock crawler, built for day trips or maybe one day on the trail. Most likely you have to trailer your vehicle to the trailhead if you are more than an hour away. Different vehicles for totally different purposes.
Pelfrey's bumpers are actually pretty damn reasonable for what you get. Of course, Skeeter could probably make one for next to nothing with scrap metal from out back, but for a pre-made piece, the Pelfrey stuff is quite "affordable".
Can you message me, or comment what specifically he did for his long travel? I want his stance and look, and want to know exactly what I need to order. It doesn't look like her has new fenders and everyone is telling me Ill need those, can you answer that also?
Really nicely put together and the electrical set up is mint, but I really think you guys need to check out PATRIOT CAMPERS or RONNY DAHL's channel from here in Australia. Rough and tough outback worthy rigs with camp set ups that will make you drool.
Dude, I live in Portland too! That is my absolute DREAM 4runner. I'm currently in the process of outfitting my.... (drum roll please), 2015 Subaru Outback 3.6R for overlanding. I would LOVE to possibly meet up at some point and shoot the shit about the rigs and receive some outfitting wisdom. I'm only 21 years old, so there is MUCH to still be learned. Just today, I installed my ARB 12v High Performance Compressor, and just about ready to put in my custom 3" suspension & body lift, so it's coming along steadily. Anyway, fantastic video and awesome vehicle!
I miss my 1985 solid axle 4Runner rig, should have never sold it. Working on a similar Landcruiser and a friend has a 70's Ford Bronco. Got Dad's old International Scout in the back of the garage too, he beat the hell out it though.
Lawndart being one of the other original inferno TRD Pros on the 4Runner forum and talking to you in depth while getting my build sorted out as we and a few others where the first with the Pro. It is good to see how everything came together. I havent seen what you did for at least over a year. I slowed down as I am hesitant since with a service dog that I may have to change my platform, if I decide to keep her I will do more as my FJ was setup the same with the TC as you have. Anyways looks good bud.
Man, you guys need to check out the MSA brand drop slides we have here in Australia that has been out for quite a while... But we do need those rigs here, id have one in a second. Love this !!!!
