Personally speaking, while I am glad people are happy with this figure I prefer the Siege/Kingdom mold due to its armor gimmick. "But when would you ever display it in white Optimus mode?" Probably never, but I find the act of suiting up the smaller figure a fun experience in of itself.
This, the armor gimmick is literally my favorite thing about the “white Optimus” versions of Magnus, heck, my holy grail for 3rd party toy purchases when I can do it will be one of the versions of fansprojects city commander armor for the classics prime mold, tho real tall, the siege version is better than the kingdom, I’d probably get this version for a proper g1 Magnus

I too appreciate the bright blue (cyan?) on the stark white. I myself however find myself displaying him in armored up mode as then I don't have to keep track of all the parts.
I got Nova Prime recently, my first encounter with the Magnus/Galaxy Prime mold and agree here. The central robot really is just Optimus Prime but in White instead of even getting a new head to make him look like Nova Major, so there's little appeal of displaying him like that. But the act of slapping the extra bits on him is quite pleasing so I find myself removing the armour and putting it back on. There's a similar vibe with loading a Macross toy for bear, but those guys are big and finnicky and a bit fragile so it's more of an ordeal than this.
While I'm not exactly the fondest of CW Magnus as a figure, his visual design and character in the comics remains as possibly my favorite incarnation of the big guys, and maybe even my favorite Autobot. I'm awaiting my copy of SS86 Magnus, and I'm hoping I enjoy it as much as I saw in this video!
It’s so crazy how similar us collectors/fans of Transformers are in terms of our love and appreciation of the different media (comics, shows, toys) yet how polarizing we can be when it comes to our favorite. This is especially true when discussing our favorite characters. I have NEVER been a big fan of Ultra Magnus. I think I just hated his toy as a kid and that sullied his reputation ever since. It’s the traditional design I dislike the most I guess. I hate those stupid plain “missiles” they never update for some reason. They’re always just the boring red, barely pointed pieces of plastic that don’t even try to look intimidating or like anything at all. Magic Square has really been the only design I’ve ever really liked. :/ Also, let’s go 10k!
The last few seconds of the video really nailed down the idea that we are all, even perhaps inadvertently, item collection pack rats. Anyone up for a wee bit of cheese or styrofoam?
I had the contrary feeling towards a figure I got recently. I got my hands on the comic colour Grimlock from Newage and it felt great to have a figure that just ticked every box and was the be-all end-all version. Problem with some of these studio series figures is that what they do, they do great, but what they do is a little boring.
Ultra Magnus is my second favourite Autobot, behind Elita-1, so getting this MAJESTY in hand was a moment. I almost cried because it's everything I ever wanted and meant I could finally, FINALLY, get rid of my Siege Magnus that rotted behind SS86 Wreck-Gar for almost 2 years. Unless we can ever get a TFA Elita-1 that BECOMES Blackarachnia, Magnus is my favourite figure ever. But come on Hasbro, give me Cree Summer's magnum opus, GIVE ME ELITA-1 TO BLACKARACHNIA NOW
Wasn't too sure if I should dip into SS86 Magnus down the line, especially while I do have Kingdom Magnus, but I think you've convinced me. At least if I come across him when I can get more toys or found him less than £90.

Great review. Well aside from the trash talking of God Magnus, I adore my grump emo child. I will say that I am honestly super happy for people who wanted all in one, but between the chest width and the lack of White Prime means the 86 Magnus is one of the weaker versions of him for me. Still worth the money though, all Magni are.
I have both 86 Magnus and kingdom Magnus and i resolved the issue like this: 86 goes to my "death of optimus" shelf with all the caracters that were in that scene Kingdom Magnus goes in my "multivers" shelf were most of the non G1 legacy stuff goes. And i LOVE the inner robot so i removed his armor. Honestly, it more a question of what you want out of your Ultra Magnus. 86 is the Magnus I ALWAYS WANTED when i saw the movie back in 2004. Ps: neat video ^^ i like to see how people organize their collections.
First figure that started collection, Beast Hunters Magnus, first commander class, first ever BBTS preorder, gorgeous figure and almost sold my Siege Maggie but that Siege Maggie helped me get through an exam. What a way to celebrate being a fan & collector of 10 years and counting! Lovely big boi!

Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus has an optional upgrade kit to swap out the truck for an actual white prime that is full transformable, some knock off company made it. I enjoy the full Ultra Mag treatment and got rid of the silly cab w/ mini-figure. I bought long ago of a OS KO Siege Ultra Magnus on ebay that is almost the same size in height as the 86" Ultra Magnus.
I'm pretty sure those annoying tabs at the top of the white spokes are supposed to go up when in robot mode to help keep the arms from swinging apart if you don't move them at the shoulder, but that might just be how I rationalized them (they aren't super effective at it, if that *is* the case).
The first saw this toy, the first thing I noticed: "WOW! THOSE ARE SOME WIDE SHOULDERS!" So... Great review of an interesting addition to your Ultra Shelf. (That sounded lile a Japanese superhero. SORRY)
This one's making me glad I kept my Siege Magnus and never got the Kingdom one. Now I have the Siege who owns the mold and its weirdness better, and Kingdom's looking like an half-assed mid-point between that and SS86.
The main thing putting me off getting this lad is I got the Takara version of the combiner wars fella back in the day. It's the one with red pants, like the long gone original from my childhood that's also long gone, and it's one of the first ones I got back when I started collecting again... so I've a lot of affection for it! So it's very unlikely I'd replace it, and if I got the new one I'd just be switching back and forth between the two. He does look great though...

On the plus side, at 1:44 the back if his shoulder cannons look like they're giving you a thumbs up. Oh and he doesn't have a butt flap like the Masterpiece.
He really does look good. I like SIEGE Ultra Magnus because he was accurate to the original. But this new SS Magnus looks great and is animation accurate. He is really bulky but i do like that about him.
I looked for so very long to get an affordable Fansproject City Commander, and then even longer to get one of the obscure alternate faces that made him look like the real thing. And this comes out. Sigh.

The only Ultra Magnus I've owned is the RID version due to his combination with RID Prime to form Omega Prime. I wonder if I should get that SS '86 Magnus at some point
Glad to see some white Optimus defenders in the comments, I love it too. To me that's what "the toy is" by that I mean the G1 original and my nostalgia. Also I enjoyed Dreamwave comics, yes, I'm that guy. My issue with Kingdom Mags is actually just that shade of blue, on this video especially it just looks wrong. Oh, good video Gavin etc. well done again I guess.
I don't have as many Magnuseses (Magni?) as your good self, but the ones I do have are satisfactory; CW Magnus IIRC he was a bargain on Kapow, Kingdom just because. (Excluding the FoC one). Surely a shelf/shrine of Magnuseseses should be known as a 'Meeting of Magnuses'? Or a Murmuring? An Ultragang? Excellent review/reviews, sir.
SS86 UM is great and (for me) is worth the hefty commander class price tag. All I need now is a Galvatron in Marvel UK comics colours about the same size as him and I will be as happy as a pig with a bucket.
I’m the same! Ultra Magnus is my favourite Autobot ever besides Optimus Prime. Besides MP22 I think SS86 Ultra Magnus is the closest to the G1 cartoon as you can get. I wish the shoulders could have been designed so it could have compressed a bit better, but it doesn’t take away how great the figure is. Also some peg slots so the guns can be hidden away. Rather than on the arm/pylons which makes it looks cluttered in truck mode I’m considering even buying another just as a spare in case something happens to my first. Or am I just being paranoid or finding excuses to buy another?
I have very few of these toys but still have opinions. RID Magnus does have a distinct vehicle look that I prefer to the original wide open carrier design. Siege Magnus has this really interesting transformation step in which a particular part slides away from one section and onto another section, and it's like something Mr Rubik might have invented. The Combiner Wars Magnus (which never really had anything to do with that play pattern) has a unique look from back when Generations was still about giving things a fresh twist. And, yeah, I dunno about Monsterpiece Theater Magnus, I feel like Studio Series might have topped him.

I love ultra Magnus but I honestly don’t know if the new Magnus is for me, I really enjoy the inner robot, but the WFC one missed the ball. Maybe he’s for me, but my next purchase at the price point will (hopefully) be Armada prime. If I can find one. I guess MP Magnus takes the shelf for the time being.
I really thought Prime Ultra Magnus would be departing the shelf. The Magnus who isnt bad, but is also so unassuming, I always forget he's in the show until he pops up without warning during my rewatch.
To be fair, though, I don't think either of us are alright at this point. I bought a Titan-class robot with Optimus Prime's face that turns into an adult-sized sniper rifle. I mean, who does that? ME, THAT'S WHO.
I love Uncle Magnus to bits. He's no Star Saber, but he is one of my All-time Autobots. Sadly I think this toy looks pretty awful (and way too big). It's like someone who'd never seen Uncle Magnus designed it while having the character described to him. Which, given what happened with Legacy Black Convoy, may well be the case. I'm glad, however, that so many people seem to love it. That's why restaurants have menus, after all. No Iron Factory Maximus Ambus on the shelf, though?
No matter how expensive it may seem, stick with throwing toys into that gaping emotional hole. I switched to cars and...well, let's just say it's a bit more financially challenging.
Seriously what is with SS86 scale? Ultra Magnus should be as tall as Galvatron, no taller! Cyclonus should be the same height as Scourge and Starscream! Yet somehow these two are taller than they need to be, Ultra Magnus taller than Grimlock, really! Also in my mind Ultra Magnus is a white Optimus Prime wearing armour as far as I'm concerned Kingdom got it right.
i really like this guy, but i already slightly overpaid for kingdom magnus not that long ago, and like, i want him, but i dont 165 canadian dollars after tax want him. maybe if they do a diaclone deco, i dunno.
The G1 Magnus with all rubber tires will always be the real deal. He’s a brick with ok arm articulation and a swivel head if you ‘modify’ him, and has weird hollow eyes, but the animation model is so close to the toy that it feels right. I would like a reissue in movie accurate colors using the new G1 articulated prime and actual hip and knee joints on the trailer legs and lateral shoulder articulation. Who knows if that will be even more expensive than the new prime and trailer tho.
I'm glad they managed to pull off a proper car carrier Magnus, but I'm kind of turned off by how much more massive his bot mode is as a result. Kingdom Magnus, while not perfect, scaled well and didn't have the huge wideness... Still I'm gonna get it anyway, and as always, the review is great, mate!
