Site set up is important. Use plywood instead of tarp. Dig stairs as you go down. Take turns in the hole. You buried your friends boots. Never undermine and brace your walls if you go deeper than 5 feet.
A tarp is actually much more practical because as you remove dirt you can pull it in. Stairs can undermine the walls and make collapse more likely and yes. Deeper than 6 feet (especially in wood liners and when it’s wet) we brace the hole. I agree though, site set up is extremely important.
