This road trip is a treasure hunt for sandstone formations, dinosaur tracks and Plains Indian rock art in the hills and canyons of the Oklahoma Panhandle. This video is part of America's Most Scenic Roads, the series that led to Beautiful Byways. The drive starts in the Texas Panhandle before crossing into the Oklahoma Panhandle on US 385. What’s remarkable about the remote western part of the Sooner State is its geological and paleontological importance. This is where prairie shortgrass meets the Rocky Mountains. And a lot of dinosaur bones have been unearthed here - 18 tons, in fact. An ancient volcano exploded in present-day Colorado and one of the lava flows ended in Oklahoma. This slow-eroding real estate is called Black Mesa and as the eastern-most extension of the Rockies, it’s the highest point in Oklahoma, elevation 4,963 feet. As the area where the mountains greet the Great Plains, plants and animals are at their westernmost and easternmost ranges. The rocks are impressive, too. Sandstone formations named “The Old Maid” and “The Wedding Party” are scenic representations of millions of years of erosion. And just across the border in Colorado is an unexpected oasis with more great hiking trails and ancient rock art. For more scenic drive inspiration visit Beautiful Byways: www.beautifulb....

A short film that says a lot. Oklahoma is a very under rated state, and this film has highlighted a region that rarely, if ever gets the attention it deserves. It is amazing to think that at the other end of the state there are Alligators. Many thanks from England.

Thanks for the comment, Mike! Sorry for the long-delayed reply. Like the U.K., every part of the U.S. has something beautiful to offer. Another one of my favorite routes in Oklahoma is the Talimena Scenic Byway. Check it out if you haven't already driven it!

I’d rather die than be in Tulsa okc is like why. The only cool parts of the state are on the fringes of other states like Colorado and Arkansas.

Great video! Brought back childhood memories. Lived in Boise City & Felt when I was a kid. We explored all that area. We found in one of the canyon arms of Picture Canyon engraved in the rock with a post nearby that it was the surveyed 3 Corners from the early 1900’s. Sad to see that Lake Carl Etling water is so far down. Before you had to walk to the top of Black Mesa you could drive across from OK to just near Raton, NM.

Okie-Tex Star Party is held in Camp Billy Joe under some of the darkest skies in the US. I need to get back out there again, though I have been there five times. Such beautiful country.

This area was where I was born, where my parents grew up during the dust bowl and WW2 years, where both my grandfathers homesteaded and built ranches. It is a place dear to my heart. Your doing a great job of showing how beautiful area is. Keep up the good work!!

Southwest of there about 100 mies is the Capulin Volcano. There are trails to hike around the crater and Maps of the other volcanic mesas and mountains in the area that are very clearly visible. It is very interesting.

If you go through Boise City, stop at the museum, part of it is in a house designed by Bruce Goff. There is no charge to tour the museum and you will not be disappointed!

Great video. We've been wanting to explore that area in Oklahoma and New Mexico from Colorado. We wrote about Picture Canyon on our book, the Hiker's Guide to Colorado, first published in 1984 (later changed to Hiking Colorado). We introduced many Coloradoans to the beauty of hiking on the plains. The closest we got to Oklahoma back then was the barbed wire fence marking the state boundary. Thanks for posting.

LOL! Great note. Thanks. Yes, as a native Coloradoan, I know how our mountains dominate but there's a lot to see on the plains, too. The rock art, trees and sandstone in this little corner of the state really reminded me of southwestern Colorado. So unexpected and enjoyable.

As an English person from the NW of the tiny British Isles who finds the flatter south of England strange the miles and miles of flat land you drove through at the start seem weird. Same when I see film of the Asian steppes or Siberia. Felt more at home when you got to the hills 😊

I couldn't agree more. I'm always amazed at how volcanic the area is, too. Volcanoes were active in that area, particularly in New Mexico, not that long ago, geologically speaking.

Thanks for this compact summary of what to so and see in the OK panhandle! I'd love to check out the rock formations along Hwy 325 (e.g. The Wedding Party). Do you happen to know if this is public land and can be accessed?
@BeautifulByways

Thanks for watching! I think both formations are on private land but I’m not sure. I took pictures from the road and I think there were fences. I’d call the Cimarron Heritage Center in Boise City for the answer. They should know: (580) 544-3479. Have a great trip!
