Treasure Planet was called “the most underrated Disney film” by so many people that it’s no longer underrated. And as someone who watched it as a child, I love that its getting appreciated
One thing! Just one thing! Please tell IT to me: WHY tf do I have so many fans even though no RU-vidr is unprettier than I am? WORLDWIDE!!!! WHY??? Tell me, dear don
Because we see a man die while babbling about how he's terrified of this guy whose been pursuing him. It's an intro to a character that immediately builds them up as a black hearted fiend.
If they made Silver a regular, run of the mill Disney villain this movie wouldn’t have been nearly as good as it was. He’s a complex character. He’s intimidating when he needs to be but overall he’s a good hearted person who got lost in his passion for looking for Treasure Planet.
I Found Hans In Frozen To Be Quite Interesting . Really Did Not Expect The Plot Twist . I Felt Bombarded With Everything About The Movie And Kinda Grew Bored Of It , But That Twist Will Always Be Interesting To Me . You Never See It Coming .
I’m so sad we never got a sequel to this movie. The story ideas and concept art looked incredible . I mean we would have gotten Willem Dafoe as the villain named Ironbeard. How awesome would that have been?
@@1cheezyboi31 agreed BUT if you look into the plans for the second one, it looks reallllllyyyy fucking cool. Disney would have probably fucked it up, but it could be sooooo cool if someone made a fan version
@@Andrew-fi1sd Unless of course they hurt the character of the characters from the prior film. It's hard for me to watch the Star Wars OT nowadays, since I know what kind of person Luke is going to become.
One thing i loved about this film was the symbolism with Jim. Being when we first see an older Jim he wears black clothing and is rebellious, but working with John he starts wearing less darker clothes suggesting he is less rebellious and is changing, then at the end we see Jim in an all white captain suit and is happy. John became the father-figure Jim needed to live a happy life with a promising career
I never noticed that, but you’re right. It’s also because John became his father figure that we got such a natural and organic change of heart from him, seeing him chose Jim over his life long dream. “Oooh, Damn me for a Blasted BOAT!!!”
@@timafterdark3759 No I didn’t forget that one. I think it’s enjoyable for sure. But like I said, Treasure Planet is the best interpretation of the story. For me personally.
My sisters art teacher once said “treasure plant failed because they put an absent father in the movie and people couldn’t handle it”. My father abandoned me and I also noticed growing up this was the only kids movie featuring the topic. The director really nailed the scene where he leaves for good.
That makes no sense that they criticize the movie because the father left, like in almost every Disney movie the mother is absent or dies so why did people judge it so harshly when Jim's father left? Doesn't make any sense to me, and yes, it was one of the saddest yet probably a very accurate representation of it. I wouldn't really know since my parents never left but I can see why people might find it relatable if they have experienced this.
@@thesurrealist8588 Villains are evil in their intentions and doings. Antagonists are an opposing force of any kind to the Protagonist, and they dont have to be necessarily evil. In a Sports movie, the opposing team is the antagonist, but they're not villains. Venom was not a villain in the movie Venom, he was the secondary Protagonist. Poor example. John starts out as a Villain, then he stops being one later in the movie.
Silvers animation is even more impressive when you learn that he was a mix of 3D computer animation and 2D hand drawn at all times his arm and the eye are 3D
@@scapegoatmiller9110 there’s a conspiracy that Disney tried to get it to fail on purpose but I don’t remember why I remember it had something to do with making sure cgi doesn’t succeed or whatever
@@zzodysseuszz it was because Treasure Planet was the most expensive animated film ever made. Could be that Disney didn't want future films to be that expensive because they were having a rough time in the 2000s and their last few theatrical feature films weren't making money (Emperor's New Groove, Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, and Home on the Range lost money; Lilo and Stitch was an outlier). They saw how well Pixar was doing, and how DreamWorks struck gold with Shrek, so they thought CGI animation was the only money maker, and tried to make their own Shrek-like fairytale satire with Chicken Little, but clearly didn't understand why Shrek worked. Chicken Little made Disney money (also because they used it to showcase the newfangled Disney Digital 3D, which as we all know was an extra surcharge on tickets) after half a decade of losses, but reviews of the time and its current legacy are largely negative.
As a kid who loves SciFi and grew up without a Father, this movie is INCREDIBLY important to me. I cut my hair like Jim for like 4 years Also. Morph is a Ditto
A little thing I would like to add regarding the songs, is one in particular: "I'm still here" was different in the French version and focused not on the fact that Jim was feeling lost due to the lack of a father figure he slowly recognized in John Silver, the French song "un homme libre" (= a free man), was instead focusing on Jim's growth as an adult through his desire to explore the world, making it a little more hopeful than the original version. Yes, this was a fun fact nobody will probably care about, but I still thought it was a nice little fact nonetheless!
Really it's because it's based off of the classic literature novel "treasure island". Like it has the complexity of character of stuff they made you read in highschool like "To Kill a Mockingbird" or "Their Eyes Were Watching God". Maybe not quite as serious or as much as those books but still fairly close.
My favorite part of the movie was when Silver actually had a clear shot at Jim, when he was running away. He has the perfect sot, but then puts his arm back down. I always love that in movies. Shows he's really grown to care for Jim. Fulfilling my love of redeemed villains.
The CGI, the Animation, the CHARACTERS THEMSELVES - beat any cartoon I've ever seen from disney - god this movie is beautiful, and the song is just a cherry on top XD
In my opinion, It's the peak for Disney in every way possible except for the animation. I think Atlantis: The Lost Empire's animation is a bit better then that of Treasure Planet's. Just my personal opinion, nothing special.
@Middle brother because Greeks have good dubs only for the Disney movies , trust me they are good but if you want to see anything else from a different company……you are gonna cringe , H A R D and before you say something, yes I am Greek
One of my favorites! The ocean is a vast and mostly unexplored void full of creatures we’ve never seen. The ones we have seen look so alien. I think the comparison of the ocean and the universe are awesome, and it’s such a creative twist on the original story!
Also Treasure Planet was gonna get a squeal with a villain played by Willem Dafoe and I’m still mad it got canceled because that would have been amazing to see.
What’s cool about johns silver is his body is 2D animation and his cyborg arm is 3D animation. So silver take up 2 different animation styles to design this character Also the song playing during the Jim and johns montage is an original song made just for the montage
I will never accept treasure planet slander in my household. I truly believe that it was so fucking innovative, rewatching it as a kid made me feel so happy and good, it’s a good father/son thematic movie which we don’t see very often from Disney.
I think that Ben being outed as just a comedic relief character truly is ignorant. He is just an insane man that lost his memory and was isolated on a planet long enough for a man to turn into a skeleton. Not only did he have a reason to be a lil goofy, he is a more integral character in the story, being the guy who leads jim to the treasure.
Said it before and I'll say it again, I like listening to people talk about stuff they like as much if not more than stuff they think is garbage. Glad you enjoyed making this one Pig, it was neat.
I remember my ex gf from like 7 years ago, I was deeply in love with her, but never as much as when I saw her baking and doing what she loved. Just fell for her all over again, then a couple of weeks later she dumped me😔😂
Yeah. Hating trash movies with 10% rating because people who made them were uninterested or incompetent got bore real quick. At least with such videos, you get good recommendations and if you like the movie, it’s great to hear others liking it too. And if you hated it, it’s interesting to see someone else’s perspective who did like it
My main tattoo on my forearm is a Treasure Planet tattoo. Easily my most favorite movie. If you watch carefully over the whole movie, you'll notice a dark bar across Jim's face representing his angst and guilt that slowly dissapears by the end of the movie, leading to one of my favorite quotes, "Look at you! Glowing like a solar fire. You're something special, Jim. You're gonna rattle the stars, you are!"
@@Whatsabird actually marvel movies would probably still be a thing because avengers was the first movie distributed by Disney every movie before that was made by marvel studios and distributed by Paramount they might not be the same as we know them but they were still being made before the purchase of marvel studios
8:57 That notification bell... took me a while to figure out it wasn't coming from my apps but from the vid xD I watched Treasure Planet not long ago and noticed i enjoy it much more now, compared to when i was a child. There is just so much depth to the main characters (and their father&son relationship is just awesome). And omg, the animations, this dynamism ! Just amazing
This is legit my fav movie ever! Captain Amelia was my first platonic crush. The giant spider was legit my invisible friend for many years (dont ask me why, I have no idea). And the relationship between Jim and Silver... Those two are the reason why ”Gruff older person suddenly finds themselves adopting a teen in need” is my favourite trope of all time!!
My dad used to get animated movie dvds for me and even in iran this one passed him by. And it couldn't make me happier. I'm glad i watched this one when i was a bit older and got to appreciate it more. This is one of my favorites 😊
18:45 I have been saying this for YEARS! Most people don't initially see the similarities between Silver and Jim but can't unsee it after i tell them. That's why we love Silver so much, it's because he's just like our hero only he went down darker paths, but then helped a boy who was like him go down a brighter path. God I love this movie so much
Treasure planet was one of the most inspiring movies I have ever seen, everything about it is absolutely amazing and the introduction to their universe is incredible
"The Captain and Dr. Dopler end up hooking it up and having babies. That was a side plot" Ironically, their relationship was the only thing I remembered about this movie.
Honestly its disneys own fault that this movie flopped as hard as it did. Look it up they screwed up the marketing for it on purpose because they didnt want it to succeed because they had something against the creators.
As cool as the visuals and science fiction elements are, the reason this movie stands above the rest is because of the relationship between Silver and Hawkins.
John was literally the best character in the movie! He had a very compelling arc. The villain turning good and being a mentor/father figure. There is nothing better in a story than a grump with a good heart ♥️. And just his whole design was badass!
I don’t think that John was intended to really be a villain villain he was more so intended to be a complex character whose kinda a gray area. He did also happen to be the antagonist for a bit but then he kinda got redeemed
This movie actually comforted me many times throughout the darkest moments of my childhood. The vibe of the movie was just so heartfelt and genuine. One of my favorites of all time.
"I don't know why people are bringing up science" Because people on reddit and .tumblr need to shit on literally everything and anything other people enjoy.
I still get so fired up that they were literally about to start recording for Treasure Planet 2 when they decided to cancel it because of how bad it did. They should’ve just made the second one as well I would’ve loved to see William DeFoe as Iron Beard!!
I would love for you to watch The Prince of Egypt. I'm not a religious person or anything but the music and animation was absolutely beautiful. I cry at the end every single time I watch it
The movie came out while I was a rebellious young teen and the song I'm Still Here was my theme when I felt misunderstood from the rest of the world. The movie still remains a gem in my heart to this day.
If they had used the entirety of Atlantis's original screenplay/script, it would have been like 2 and a half hours long. They had to cut out a lot of the journey to Atlantis and a bunch of the creatures they would have encountered, such "squid bats" and "lava whales". You can find storyboards of some deleted scenes on the original special edition DVD release or on RU-vid most likely.
One of the things I remember from this movie is when they're trying to escape the ship and Amelia has given Doppler a laser gun, and at one point he shoots a bunch of hanging barrels or something down and wipes out a group of pirates and Amelie asks if he meant to do that and he replies "You know what, I actually did!" but in like this surprised tone and it's hilarious. XD
(Sort of) Recently rewatched this movie for the first time in over a decade and I remembered why it was my favorite as a kid but I love it even more as a adult because I can fully appreciate the story and the artistic aspect of it and it made me wanna rebuild the relationship I have with my dad. Everything about this movie is wonderful and I’m glad it’s getting recognized for what is, a masterpiece.
This movie was like a fever dream to me as a kid and after all this time i just thought it was a dream but the fact that I dont belong in an insane asylum and didn't think this twisted master piece up is amazing.
The trailer is proof enough of that. They outright say in the trailers that Silver is the bad guy! That would be like if they straight up told us Hans was the villain in the Frozen trailers!
@@insertclevernamehere1186 bro this is made from a book that is like 100 years old and the movie is also really old. and the book was read in highschool for a really long time. long john silver is a household name for anyone over 20 and everyone already knew the story when this came out. since its such a known story is actually one of the reasons no one went to theaters. they thought it was a kids movie about treasure island
@@zyourzgrandzmaz You just said "anyone over 20" as if Disney's target audience isn't predominantly children. Just because a old story is being remade for the newer generations doesn't mean that everyone knows what it's about. Let's use your highschool reading example. Imagine your teacher assigns your class a classic book to read that you haven't heard of before. You're excited to read it, when suddenly he just starts talking about major plot points. Sure, they might have been super familiar with the book, but you weren't. Now reading it for the first time won't have the same impact because now you know what most of the plot points are...
You've been absolutely KILLING IT with your video line up - The chicken movies , Atlantis and now Treasure planet too. What next? The Hunchback of notre dam? Ichabad crane the headless horseman and Mr toad?
Apparently, some at Pixar believe they killed 2D animation after Disney’s early 2000’s 2D films flopped so badly (after Pixar made 3D animation popular with the public).
I rewatch this movie every year. Last year I noticed just how amazing the character animation was; everything is so seamless and the acting suits the characters.
If you like all the animation in this movie I’d recommend you’d look into it, there’s so much cool stuff that this pushed forward with most scenes using multiple types of animation. Even John’s animation was done with two different programs in every scene that he’s in.
1:08 Hey, that's breadsword's video on treasure planet! I know the title calls it a mistake, but it's actually a really big love letter to that movie and explains the development, why it flopped, and even talks about the planned and scrapped sequel that was supposed to star Willem DaFoe as the main villain
Bro I can't believe some of those people thought that this movie was bad, this is a master piece. treasure planet and Atlantis: the lost empire are my long time favorite Disney movies as a child up to a young adult.
Treasure Planet is one of my favorite Disney movies. Unfortunately was hated because it wasn’t the standard Disney format. I honestly wish Disney would bring back its 2D animation studio
This movie is spacepunk, and it’s amazing. If Disney didn’t basically sabotage the advertising it would have probably been sold out in the box office. The writers had an entire script for a sequel ready, and from what I know it’s equally amazing. This movie was done dirty in so many ways
I love this movie it's right up there with Tarzan mulan the lion king and Atlantis the lost empire as well as the hunchback of Notre Dame as one of the best Disney movies man
This movie was my whole childhood, and my fiancé had never seen it so we watched it together the other day, and holy shit. It’s amazing. I’m so glad you like it.
Thank you! He’s not even in the whole movie, so he it’s not a constant annoyance If people don’t like him! I thought he was pretty funny, and still do.
Not gonna lie when the montage between silver and Jim started playing with that music in the background I started to cry for some reason,I don't know why the scenes hit hard for me
This movie holds a special place in my heart. Jim and silvers relationship makes me cry each time. The score is amazing and i could listen to it every day.
Love it how both childhood favorite movies were underated. I still rewatch them every now and then and it never gets old. 'Ye-yeah.. Ki-Kiragashnaga.... hey do you go by anything else???"
As an animation dork, I love this movie. Some of the CG hasn't aged well (the space whales) but the mixing of 2D and 3D animation is just stunning. And if you want another really great underrated movie, Dreamworks "The Prince of Egypt". It's the biblical tale of Exodus, changed but still handled with care. The music is great, the animation is fantastic, and it just feels like an epic film.
I grew up without a dad in the 90's. John was such a complicated villain for me because he became an amazing father figure to Jim. I know hes a bad guy but i dound myself kind of sweeping that under the rug just because he took Jim under his wing in the way he did. To this day, that montage where hes teaching Jim and the end may or may not still gets my eyeballs leaking a lil
I watched this movie on vhs as a kid and it is still my favourite animated movie till this day 😩 the sound track slaps and the animation/creativity is amazing. Space pirates, its insane how this movie flopped but I'm so happy its coming to light now
I totally agree with you here. Amazing movie, very underrated. But the whole reason they flopped was not because everyone hated it, it was because they used very expensive animation for the entire movie! The cost of the movie was way more then what they earned and that's what almost ruined them. The ship is entirely 3-d, the planet is 3-d, and everyone else is 2-d. I also have a theory between John silver and Jim. I know this is based off a movie which was based off a book, but what if John is actually Jim's long lost father? His father ran off for presumably treasure and he had a book about treasure planet. Years later he comes up on a voyage to treasure planet, the thing he's been searching for his entire life, and poses as crew. The reason him and Jim get together is because they are actually family. And the cyborg/different look, advanced surgery. He was able to get the cyborg parts after a lost battle and somewhere in life get a different look to keep hidden as best as he could. That's why Jim never recognized John as his father. And everything John does in the movie supports this theory
Fun fact: this movie was actually SET UP to fail! You know how there's those 3d looking backgrounds and props in the movie? That was actually some technology called "Deep Canvas" that would have been very useful to new businesses that wanted 3d animation, but couldn't get good 3d animators, or spend the time making 3d props and environments! On top of that, it also allowed for 2d animation to be drawn on top of the 3d! Disney however, being capitalist scumbags, didn't like this tech because it was cheap, and could possibly allow upstart businesses to overtake them, stealing viewers from Disney shows, making them earn less money. So what did Disney do about this? They made this movie using Deep Canvas, and didn't promote it. So when the movie released in Theaters, it was a total flop! This made Deep Canvas tech look like the reason the movie had failed, and discouraged other companies from using it.
I agree with the fact that Disney wanted it to fail, but I feel another huge reason was the marketing was atrocious, spoiling huge twists and putting emphasis on the worst parts of the film.
Just earlier today, as I was playing The Outer Worlds, I was reminded of this movie and thought how awesome it would be for more studios (whether film or video game) to explore this theme of space pirates. Though Outer Worlds doesn’t much, something about being the ‘Captain of the Unreliable’ makes me think how cool it would be to have a pirate-themed game set in space.
I had the biggest crush on Jim. Lol ESPECIALLY the opening scene where he’s hover boarding & starts free falling. That cemented my little kiddo heart onto him so quickly hah
VERY sad that you didn't mention the amazing father-son bonding moment silver and jim had after mr arrow died. "and when the time comes where you really test the cut of your sails and show what youre made of, I hope im there, catching some of the light coming off you that day" makes me cry every time
This was one of the few Disney projects that succeeded in making a world that I'd actually want to live in. Everything about it was interesting, and made me want to know more. How did Flint find Treasure Planet in the first place? All this advanced technology and they're still using gold, gems and such as a currency? What are the planets these people come from like? Did Jim invent that solar surfer thing of his or is that a known sport and he just jury rigged his own? This movie deserved more than it got; I know I'd rather have a pet Morph than a Porg, that's for damn sure.
I read somewhere that the science in this movie is actually based on the knowledge that people had of the nature of the universe duiring the time Treasure Island (the book) was published. Like, the space is filled with mystical element called ether (or aether) and other stuff. I found that interesting.
