MC only cut off Gaston's Mana to stop his regenerating ability when he cut off his hand. From what I could understand, he used the same sword to cut off something, could be mana or spiritual power of his cause the sword's ability hasn't been explained, to make Gaston's power comes back to him and regenerate again. He didn't kill Gaston, he almost killed him but when he saw Gaston's memories, he stabbed his own hands with his sword, hence I think he did the same thing to his ownself to return Gaston's power as he'd stop his mana from flowing.
