I enjoyed your video. I do want to share my story. My little mini Maltese Chicklet passed away in our home 5 days ago😢. She was just shy of her 13th birthday. Chicklet hah trachea collapse since about 2 yrs old. It was stage one so very manageable, however even at that young age, she still had a few scary "breathing attacks" that's what we called them. We would comfort her by lightly rubbing her ears as it seemed to calm her. So this was life for many yrs living with a pup with this condition. We did much of the things mentioned in this video...keeping dust low etc. This past Dec 2023 she had developed new symptoms and one days had an attack that was far worse then anything we or her experienced before. It was louder and lasted longer where she couldn't breath properly, and she panicked. We took her to the vet that day as she was having this attack. My vet checked her over and said there was not much he could do, however he said she could have inflammation in the trachea, which is common. So prescribed an anti-inflammatory. It seemed to be working, so for about a month everything was good....until she suddenly fainted on evening (I came home from work to excited dogs- her brother Maltese too) she fainted I picked her up and started rubbing her tummy trying everything I could think of knowing it was probably from lack of oxygen. She was blue...but then came back slowly breathing! Color came back, and she seemed fine...to the point of picking on her brother and eating. It was surreal. Called the vet next day was told this is symptoms of stage 4 tracheal collapse. I was told she will probably faint again and not come out of it or may never faint again. That's how unpredictable it is. Well another couple weeks go by with no real issues, she old but acting like a puppy. Then it happened again...fainted, came out of it, all good again. Then a week later, this past Tuesday my son wakes me in the middle of the night saying somethings wrong with Chicklet! Brings her to my room, I hold her only to see her poor condition....I knew she was going to die. Rapid distressed panting, excessive drooling, knocking in her chest with fluid in lungs..and her eyes darting independently side to side. All I could do was tell her she's a good girl, the best dog, mommy and Jaden (son) love you so much, and how sorry I was she had to experience this end. 😭 She died within an hour...in my arms. There was no open vet in the middle of the night to take her to. If it happened during daytime business hours I would have ran her to the vet, not to save her, but to have them take her out of the suffering. She was old, had other health issues such as spinal cord disease, and blind in one eye. She lived a good life. The reason I told my story is I never want anyone to go through what me and my son, and mostly my sweet Chicklet went through. She died not only from trachea collapse but congestive heart failure. This is common with the trachea collapse diagnosis however many vets minimize it's severity. Many vets also minimize the severity of trachea collapse. Had I known her heart was affected, I would have taken her in to be euthanized after the first fainting. The only peace we have is knowing she had a very good day before her death. She ate her favorite treat, shrimp, played with her brother, and her favorite person, my adult son and her mom (me) comforted her in the end. RIP my sweet girl.❤️🐕

Hello, thank you for sharing and posting this video. Just wanted to share that I use cbd for my Yorkie ( partially collapsed trachea) at night. I also put him on a diet, went from 10lbs to 8lbs which helped alot. In the morning, once during the day, I give him a teaspoon of honey ( finger fed a lil at a time) this sooths the trachea. I also give him some chicken or beef broth every morning, just before i give him pureed food( add a 1/4 teaspoon of olive oil). I excersize him lightly( chasing the ball) once a day . Keeping it down to 4 times. I also take him for a slow walk in the afternoon. He only "hacks " about 3 times a day. When he wakes up and twice during the day. I pray over him too. I also invested in a $600 air purifer. My Gizmo is 15, I'm grateful that he's only had this for 2 years. My plan of action - God- Me- Vet. Will send prayers up for all pet parents and their fur babies💜🙏

Such a good mom. Just took my baby girl yorkie honey to the vet (13 yr) and she has this . I just wanted to cry, they prescribed medicine and I'm looking all ways to help. I was already giving her honey when she would cough to help her.. and we have an air purifier but I most protect her at all cost. She's my angel on earth ...❤I hope it does not get worse.

My yorkie/chihuahua suffered from this for 3 years before it became so severe and untreatable that I had to help him cross the rainbow bridge. One big tip of mine, get them a humidifier, don’t let them chug water for too long, and protect the air they breathe at all costs. No smoking, no incense, no strong perfumes or air fresheners. Once my Boi passed, a level of worry I did not know I had just disintegrated. I was holding so much anxiety from constant worry for the last few years and I definitely get the irritability that comes from your dog constantly making that noise. Remember the more they cough, the more irritated it gets. The worse it gets.

My yorkie, EverMore, also has CT. Beef or chicken BONE broth is chock full of collagen, which is the main component of the trachea. I give her one tsp per meal, being careful not to give too much. In this case, more is not better! Also, the membrane between the shell and the whites of eggs are also high in collagen. (I let them dry out and cut them in small pieces so they don't stick in her throat.) I give her all natural honey to ease her throat, and it is anti-bacterial. 👍 Thank you for your video... I relate to everything you've shared and learned other things I can do for EverMore.

@kevint5793
@kevint5793 2 года назад
Turning on the AC might blow dust and pollen around the house. Make sure you are changing out the air filter. Also, AC reduces the humidity and make the air more dryer when the air gets colder. Get a humidifier and a humidifier level meter to make sure the humidity is between high 40s to 55. Too much humidity 60 and over is bad for your pet, as well as, causes an environment for mold.

My standard Pomeranian is 16. I hear that's top of the life expectancy for them. The last few months she's started honking. The two vet visits he insists she doesn't have this condition even though I've asked both times or heartworms. He gave us cough tablets without any name on the paperwork or the pill. He said she has bronchitis and allergies. Two doses later she had two seizures for the very first time. I immediately quit giving them to her and seizures stopped. She's still coughing and hacking . I found a vet video he said bronchitis give tinctures of Licorice root and marshmallow. That really helps after few minutes. But he said it's temporary so only give 5-7 days twice a day. Now the I'm trying figure out what to do next.

My vet told us nothing was wrong the first few times we took her. Doctors are only human so I'm all for doing my own research, monitoring, and taking that info back to them. I'm glad you have found something that is helping the coughing. I say speak to your vet again or even try a new doctor. I just recently switched vets because our original wasn't taking my concerns seriously. Best of luck with figuring out what's going on with your babe.

One of our Japanese Chins I suspect has collapsed trachea. The vet is taking conservative approach because she is 13 years old and put her on a cough suppressant; started yesterday. I found a RU-vid video that recommended (and has tons of good reviews) on Pet Well-being Throat Gold. It was expen$ive and arrives tomorrow via Amazon; about $70 for 4 oz but we want our old girl to be comfortable and breath easier. Another video with a vet suggested 1/2 tsp of natural honey twice a day which we started today. I’m picking up a humidifier after work too. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be one-end-all-be-all remedy. It’s a combination of things. But I’m willing to try for her sake 😢.

@@MaxxsMom it’s only been a few days and although I’m sad it’s not the results others had, she seems a little better; like if her goose honking was a 8 out of ten before, she’s like a 6.5 now… but she’s still currently on the prescribed cough suppressant which I’m not sure is helping… 🤨 She seems in better spirits. She came upstairs for the first time in a lot of days! She honked/coughed a lot from her activity intolerance afterwards but I’m looking at her willingness to even come upstairs as a positive sign! How do you give the fish oil? A pill or liquid? I read that a little olive oil can be okay too to coat her throat in small quantities.

Update: Our old girl was initially given a prescription for a cough suppressant. We did that for about a little less than 2 months. We stopped when our vet told us they no longer carried the cough suppressant and would have to get it through an outside company that was going to charge us $200 instead of the $20 our vet was charging us!! Ridiculous right? The whole time though, we were also doing the Throat Gold. We saw improvement but thought it must have been the prescription for the cough suppressant but to our surprise she didn’t have the honking even after we decided to stop the cough suppressant; we were, and are still using the Throat Gold and I believe it was a combination of the two things (starting both the prescription cough suppressant and the Throat Gold & continuing the Throat Gold). She seems years younger. The only snorting she does occasionally is her typical Japanese Chin shnizzles. We don’t do honey anymore to make sure she doesn’t gain weight unnecessarily. We are still using the same bottle and have about a quarter left so although it is pricey, for her size, it has lasted us a good amount of time. Just thought I’d give an update in case this info would help anyone else to try this product.

My 4 lb Yorkie just had an episode last Saturday. Ironically, this was 4 days after being to the vet and getting her regular shots, as a heartworm, mite, kennel cough, and flea shot. I thought it might be a case of get a flu shot...and get the flu. So, Monday we went to the vet. But, the vet said she wasn't coughing consistently and kennel cough doesn't just go away after a single day. She said due to her tiny size, it was most likely collapsing trachea. She suggested honey, no collar when at home (or at all), something called Rescue Remedy, and a humidifier or even that AND an air purifier if it continues on. Also something called Alveenie (I apologize I have not really looked into that one yet as ut was mentioned if she's consistently coughing...which she's not yet ..thank Goodness). But, she's only 5 years old, not overweight, no smokers in our home, and not a heck of a lot of excitement since we live in the country. So, in your discussions has anyone matched similar symptoms/scenario? I appreciate you catching your pup in a video. It did confirm that it's the same sounds that we heard. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I had 2 prior Chihuahuas & they came from shelter so they had no idea or didn't tell me anything. It is very dry here in winter. I got Humidifier which puts moisture back in air. B4 I got i wld take them both into bathroom & let it steam up. I've always adopted senior dogs & somehow the cats find me & adopted lol. So the 2 I had 1 was allergic to grass so she got half benedryl at nite. Started getting worse, he said give half early & bedtime. She slept all time. So then changed to Claritin in day & benedryl at nite. She had an enlarged heart. Was hard for me to catch her on video. She passed out on Sunday nite (stopped breathing) got her back, I sat up with her all nite. Took 1st thing, they wanted xrays. They were always with me - car, outside, wherever. Took her from my arms & out of my site & she had heart attack. I lost her there. I had to take her brother home without her. Hard! Then about a yr later he started gaining weight it seemed. He had Congestive heart failure & had fluid on his stomach. Btw, I was feeding both Freshpet roll. They loved it. Then with his CHF no sodium. So, suggested I feed chicken boiled (I put in crockpot). They liked green beans & carrots (which was in Freshpet). So I mixed it up. I wld get either a whole chicken or frozen chicken none seasoned. Crockpot, then cup of rice & either carrots 1x & beans next. I got to spend another year with him after he was diagnosed. I didn't want him to suffer & I was giving pills & they were draining fluid once a month it seemed. I took him on Friday. She said I needed to make decision & he will let me know. On Sunday, he crawled in my lap & stared in my eyes & he let me know he was tired. So I took him for 1 last order if McDonald's nuggets. Then a month later, a friend called said they had 1 big, & 2 little come in together. Big adopted right away. Little girl was blind & boy had 3 canine teeth & 1 toward back. Since 2 Chihuahuas needed special homes, I took boy Beau who is 12 yrs old now & I was already cooking. I just kept thinking this was why I was there, he needed someone who would cook & take care of him, I had been doing this all along. But he has severe separation anxiety & he's started cough when I got him, gave same meds as u, seemed to clear up over summer & started again last week. But good luck & if u need to ask me anything as well, I'm always around. One thing, I had my CHF dog & we had gotten so close bc feeding & meds on time (even my cat knew when it was time, that's a whole other 1 (15 yrs old, 19 lbs). I thought I was preparing myself & knew 1 day I wld have to make the decision which is never easy. But you are never fully prepared even tho u know.

My ( Lucy) Yorkie,is 14 years old soon. Trachea problems got worse about 2 years ago. What really helped in the beginning was a product on line called ( Throat Gold). Helps lubricant their throat. We now have her on a mild steroid,in her food morning and night. She’s doing pretty well. Drinking water,seems to be her hardest,she coughs a lot. Other wise,she is active and happy.

My dachshund/Chihuahua has had this for years. I use a humidifier next to her bed and it does seem to help for the most part. She 16 and has epilepsy. She needs dental surgery badly but I'm terrified to have her under anesthesia, I know it can damage the trachea even more. I know weight loss can help, and in her case it has

Thank you so much for this video. My 13 year old peekapoo has this and we are currently waiting for more diagnostic testing so he can hopefully get the right meds. It is heartbreaking hearing him cough. I’ve noticed the same thing, it gets worse when the temperature changes and it gets colder. This summer he was fine and now that it’s October it’s coming back. I also bought a purifier and it helped slightly. I make sure to vacuum regularly. I don’t use candles anymore. Looking into humidifiers now as well. We started using throat gold supplement and that has helped a lot, but he still has at least one coughing fit at night. It’s hard for us to sleep. Once I wake up I have a hard time going back to sleep. Does your dog get worse at night too? What do you do to get a better nights sleep? I hear you on the AirPods thing, I feel a little less guilty now.

Hey, Sarah! Thanks for sharing. Same here. Roxxi is starting to honk again and it makes me really sad, but she's generally a happy dog so I know she's in good spirits. I've also stopped using candles and purchased a few WINIX purifiers to place throughout my house. I really like them. We also give her hydrocodone at night when the honking is persistent and makes it hard for everyone to get to sleep, including Roxxi. We picked it up from the vet. It's a controlled substance so you'll have to give a written doctor's prescription to the pharmacist every time, but it's SO worth it. It calms Roxxi down and helps her sleep throughout the night.

Then I got her a kennel cough vaccine because her groomer that would come to my house retired, so I made her an appointment with a groomer and felt like since she has this and is going to be around other dogs that she needed the vaccine… in 3 days she started coughing.. I rushed her to the vet.. X-rays showed no heart or lung issues.. blood work was great. The vet is only giving her hydrocodone. I bought a humidifier today. Karen, 👋 I will make this short, I have a Pug that is 14 and just this past few months she started doing the coughing and gag reflex and noticed especially after drinking and the cooler weather effects it worse after a trip to her vet a thorough exam was performed by him, having leaving her because of the Covid restrictions I received a phone call from the vet of his findings other than his thinking that it could be her trachea collapsing his concern was a lymph node on one side of he throat was enlarged, so with that she was given a antibiotic by injection & in two weeks bring her back to examine, after the sixth day the lymph node that was swollen had all but disappeared and was normal in size from what I could feel but this was priority first, I was also told about the steroids and hydrocodone too. But! Here is where you should seriously think about trying. First thing is get rid of scented candles or anything that is aerosol in room refreshers or colognes and purchase a humidifier and the hepa air cleaner is a good thing, smoke from cigarettes or any smoke is very bad. But! What I really want to tell you about is a product that I was told about from a friend and the product is called “Throat Gold”, it is sold on Amazon and it is all Natural, also chewy has it on there Webb site also, I ordered it a week after seeing the vet and received it in a couple of days from Amazon, I can confirm it does work for my Pug, I read a lot of reviews on this product just to get more thoughts on the results, I was going to order and try it anyhow, after receiving it through usps I gave it to her right away, I will tell you this, I took a taste test myself before and Will say it does taste sweet to me, I seen no harm in it so why not? anyhow, I immediately seen results and I highly recommend it, for the price of her next visit to the vet in the following week why not purchase and try . Your decision though

I give her a natural cough suppressant which helps … I am starting to give her CBD and it seems to calm her down which helps a lot! But mainly try not to get her excited, because that is what makes things worse …And clean air for sure will helps a lot…. I am a little scared because mine she is 18 years old and having problem breathing will affect her heart.but thanks God she is still going … 😊

Now he has trachea problems yes the cough. We are asthmatics and use inhalers albuterol inhalers and flonase both over the counter ask pharmacist . Yes he came to the right house. We have prescription ones for ourselves and use them on our dog and voila stops cough pronto. I would suggest albuterol 1st, then steroid inhaler and if needed lastly steroid pill. Steroids,thin bones. We always use a harness imagine your neck being jerked and pulled . Sadly many dogs suffer from this.

Ok Yes the cough is similar to my dog but yours seems to not stop and my dogs is odd occasions. Vets are not an option for me as my last two dog died of the same issue and vets have no option to treat this so I looked at what if a human had these symptoms and if so this would be diagnosed as asthma which means inflammation. I cured my son with the herb thyme for asthma so I added that to my dogs diet. 2. A spoon full of honey ( high quality orgnic) with 1/4 teaspoon of organic turmeric powder an added to that 2 sprays of Propolis & Manuka Honey Spray. 3. My dog had constant ear infection so I clean my dogs ears with colloidal silver solution and if infection returns I use Canesten topical cream. In my opinion the dogs have asthma if the weather changes like in humans it makes the asthma worse and that in why you dog is worse with change in locations. My dog is definitely getting better on this treatment. i am so happy this time round my dog has an option to this issue.
@MaxxsMom
@MaxxsMom Год назад
Roxxi's cough is not chronic. It all depends on the weather and other external factors. Generally decreasing excitement helps the disorder. There are medications that help to calm the coughing as well. Natural remedies such as air purifiers, humidifiers, generally clean air, and a healthy diet also assist with this disorder (just as with any other disorder). The only "fix" for a collapsed trachea is surgical repair, which is an absolute last resort for this condition. Hope your dog is doing well!

An x ray showed severe collapsed trachea but my dog doesn't have severe cough. He only coughs sometimes at night or after drinking and it's not a honk. Just seems out of breath but is also fat and old so it's hard to tell if it's just normal. He was in a state of a full blown hyperventilation panic attack during the x ray so I wonder if that's why it showed it. He literally won't loose weight. He's only one 1/4 cup weight loss food twice a day and won't loose weight. He's 10.5 lbs and was 8.5 lbs when I adopted him
@MaxxsMom
@MaxxsMom 19 дней назад
Roxxie had stubborn weight a few years ago. I discovered that she was actively searching for crumbs in the kitchen and sneaking food from the other dog bowls! And the panic attack is most likely why they were able to see the trachea collapse. Scans will only show the collapse if it's active (panting). Everyone responds differently. Roxxie used to honk, but now it's more of a soft pant or I'll notice a difference in her tongue color. Hope your dog is well!

Hi, Brandy. So sorry your baby is struggling with this condition and you're having a hard time finding assistance. US vet prices vary by location. A typical vet visit for me is about $60 plus the price of medication or exams. There are also financial assistance programs/payment plans at most vets. Roxxi's on 1 ml of hydrocodone when needed (maybe a few times a month). That's about $30 for 30 ml. I also use an air purifier at home, which really has helped decrease her coughing. I make sure to keep her in smoke-free environments and only offer her healthy treats to maintain a good weight since she has a breathing condition. I hope this helps.

You can also buy anti anxiety drops from the pet supply store, online or from the vet. I have a really excitable Shih Tzu - Maltese mix and when she is coughing it’s really scary to me. Holding her close and soothing her sometimes helps to lessen the coughing and work as well as the medication that I give her. I pray that your little fur baby manages to overcome this bout. 💪🏽🐶

Hi, Michelle. My dog Roxxi can be snappy if she's not having her way so I have to include food at medicine time! I mix her hydrocodone with a super small batch of wet food and she eats it. If she's using a pill steroid, I cover it with a bit of peanut butter.

I identify with you here! My dog does the same!! I wonder if it's because they are more calm in front of the vet because they don't want to be there.

What kind of air purifier would you recommend?
@MaxxsMom
@MaxxsMom 5 месяцев назад
There are a lot of really great ones nowadays. I think any would be good. A lot of companies got their act together during the pandemic. My favorite is the Winix 5500.

Is she is coughing more at home then somewhere else it maybe allergies or air quality Try a dog inhaler
@MaxxsMom
@MaxxsMom 5 месяцев назад
It may have been allergies along with the collapsed trachea because she has stopped honking since we reported a neighbor for smoking and moved.

My pombaby 36months has been honking 7days now, been twice to the vet n now has a collapsed trachea 😢, refuses to eat anything and when I do attempt to force feed through a syringe she attacks. I do give her honey lemon mixed in warm water through the syringe which is also a time to attack me.. how do I feed her and what can I feed as she refused all food

I'm so sorry that you and your baby are dealing with this. I'm not sure what foods to suggest if she's refusing to eat. I recommend asking your vet. An IV at the vet's office may be necessary.

Hello. Sorry for your little dog. I have just lost yorkshire terrier Gina. Not sure if she had collapsed trachea and bad lungs. My other dog Jack Russell cross is on cardisure and the diuretic frusemide. Frusemide will help. They are cheap tablets. Good luck xc

Would Roxie losing weight decrease her coughing and honking?
@MaxxsMom
@MaxxsMom 8 месяцев назад
Roxxi is at the smallest weight she should be at. I'm not sure of her weight at the time of this recording, but she is at an ideal weight now and her weight has never had an impact on the honking. It's mostly been weather and excitement/energy levels. Also traveling into the mountains has aggravated it in the past.

Hi. Thanks for asking! I've noticed she coughs more during temperature changes. The vet says it's probably mucus drainage. We've bought air purifiers to assist her breathing by providing cleaner air. She's doing well!
