Come along while we treat one of our ponds for filamentous algae, OR hair algae, OR string algae. We're gonna use a copper based algaecide, known as Cutrine Plus, in both liquid and granular forms. We'll show you how we use a common garden sprayer, as well as hand broadcasting, to deliver a knockout one/two punch! Please remember to comment below, as well as like and subscribe!

The floating mats will flower, then floating filaments flood the water dropping to the bottom. Pond dying is also effective.

We've added dye in the past, but we try to avoid doing so due to the dye suppressing the phytoplankton. When your goal is to grow the biggest bluegills possible, every little bit helps! Thanks for commenting!

New subscriber here, how did this work for you?

Hi, thanks for subscribing. The Cutrine Plus works very well on floating algae, but I should emphasize that algae issues are caused by excessive nutrients in your pond.... meaning that unless the source of the high nutrient load can be reduced, the algae control will most likely be temporary! Sorry, I'm sure that's not what you were hoping to hear. Basically, algae isn't the problem, it's a symptom of the problem... excessively nutrient rich water is the problem. Good for growing fish, but also good for growing unwanted vegetation and algae. So yeah, Cutrine will knock the algae back, but it will most likely be temporary. Thanks for the question, hope this helps!

Well, to be honest we've never tried Cutrine on blue/ green algae. I suspect it might work, but I really don't know? Sorry!

would this works for duckweed

I'm afraid not... sorry! We use -Sonar AS- to eradicate duckweed, but please be aware that sonar is non-selective, and will kill most other plants in your pond also. And it is very expensive! Good luck!

I used Flumigard on my duckweed and it worked great. Now all I have is the stringy mess like the video.

Doesn't that product kill all your wildlife, fish, frogs, turtles, etc.?

We've never had an issue with fish kills, amphibians, etc. I suppose if used incorrectly it might have a negative impact, but then again, that holds true for just about everything from Cutrine Plus to Coca-Cola. Chemical control is an extremely useful tool in the pond manager's arsenal, but it's not a "fix all" for every situation. Appreciate the question!
