Another option is BAHA fyi if others are wondering my audiologist told me I qualify for BAHA not the cross
@DrCliffAuD
@DrCliffAuD 8 месяцев назад
They are not mutually exclusive. If you qualify for BAHA (for SSD) you ALSO qualify for CROS.
@ChristyD97
@ChristyD97 8 месяцев назад
Were they possibly talking about insurance? As Dr. Cliff said "If you qualify for BAHA (for SSD) you ALSO qualify for CROS." Based on that the only reason a person might not qualify for a CROS, but they do for a BAHA might be because many insurance companies WILL cover the cost of the surgery and the devices, when they WON'T cover the cheaper option of providing for a CROS. This is not the case with all insurances, but it is with some.

I underwent surgery 2 times for an Acoustic Neuroma Brain Tumor. This tumor destroyed my hearing nerve and I am now SSD on the left permanently. Its been 2 years since my hearing was taken away and every day my quality of life is deeply impacted and it gets worse. I have gone in for evaluations and consultations and I feel completely left out. I live in a life of isolation bc I am overstimulated with the one ear and its affected my judgement, my confidence, my cognitive understanding and my social interactions. I'm angry bc i dont fit anyones mold of if there is an option tl help me or not. When i went for the BAHA consult, they had nothing for me to even similate and i was told my insurance doesnt cover it and it was almost 7000. I am in my 40s and bc i have an ear people assume i dont have a disability. This invisible disability makes life even harder. I get tired of the frustration of asking someone to repeat themselves or pretending i can understand. Im so stuck in this loop that i dont even know how to help myself.

Wow. Very interesting information. I know I always try to position myself with the speaker on my better hearing side but i think i would not be able to understand conversations if i was trying to get all my information from one ear.

TBI 6yrs ago crushed the vestibular cochlea nerve and I have a permanent 80% hearing loss in my left ear. Been told it's totally inoperable and cochlear implant is my only option. If they were subdural I'd consider it but I'm vain as hell and holding out for Dr. Bones to walk in with a medical tricorder and repair the nerve in 60 seconds.

I have been suffering from hearing loss in my right ear since I was young. I am now 28 years old, but one day I tried to wear traditional earphones to listen to music. I closed the side of the ear that I hear with and played music with the earphones in the ear that I do not hear with. I noticed that I hear with it at a very low rate, but it is clear what are the treatment cases for such a condition?

As someone with SSD, is it possible if i use bone conduction hearing aid instead?

New to your channel, do you have a video for unilateral mild to severe hearing loss? To add to that complexity, do you have a video for unilateral mild to severe conductive hearing loss (reverse slope)? Because that’s me. I’m on my second change of dome hearing aid and would love to research more

Hi Dr.Cliff, How can the audiologist test and confirm the CROS transmitted sound & conversations won't be blocked out by normal everyday noise (traffic, kitchen fan, vacuum cleaner etc.) coming into your good ear? As you mentioned, many feel they can get by without a HA in quiet environments even with the head shadow handicap, but not where there is competing sounds.

By testing your SNR Loss. If your SNR Loss isn't good, you will need an additional accessory like a remote microphone.

Hello, Thank you.. Can you do a video on how a person hears with hearing aids and cochlear implant? I mean, the way they are hearing it.. Like any exoerience from people who have further generated HL in their life and got hearing aid or cochlear implant

Honestly, a lot to unpack here, and I'm often not that articulate but here we go: I had sudden hearing loss about 6 years ago with 24/7 raging tinnitus. Your channel helped guide me initially realize I had to advocate w/the audiologist as best I could for my best health. This sincerely feels like a sponsored video and not much more. I know you are clear that it is a sponsored video. The Phonak Cros System I tried for about a year was nothing better than a paper weight. A very expensive paper weight. It was simply not effective. Of all the fellow SSD people I've met (which is a startling amount actually) none of them had any success with a Cros hearing aid system. We all have had exceptional success with a cochlear implant. You don't mention that at all in this. I hope for many people this newer attempt at this technology can work but I still feel uncomfortable with the way you have presented this.

CROS hearing aids are used successfully by many people. One unfortunate aspect of CROS or any other hearing treatment option is that it only works as well as it is programmed and not many professionals are experienced info fitting & verifying their performance.

My little nephew is having severe HL from birth. She is now using hearing aids. She is responding with it. But we dont know how she is hearing it whether clearly or not. I really wanted to know how it feels to hear with a cochlear implant. I think you can help me as you had the sense of normal hearing and the hearing with cochlear implant. Your reply might help ua in taking a decision. Hopefully

@@rashak1298 a Cochlear Implant will be her new normal and she will likely hear very well with it if hearing aids aren't working optimally. Cochlear Implants are the closest thing to a medical miracle I've ever seen.

I did have all the programming checked numerous times by the very capable audiologists at Mass Eye and Ear but it just failed to do much at all and trust me I wanted nothing more than to avoid surgery. Also, one thing to point out: a CROS hearing aid cannot bring any relief to tinnitus but the Cochlear Implant immediately solved that for me as long as sound is traveling through the cochlear into the electrodes and my brain is too busy deciphering the electronic code to be bothered by it, so, from the start I began to hear better as I was my brain wasn't fighting the ringing. Also, a CROS cannot give you back sound localization but the CI has. Another benefit to my brain is streaming directly to the my cochlear so that the "dead" ear is being exercised so to speak. @@DrCliffAuD

Here is my question; with a single sided hearing loss, at what point or level of hearing loss would you benefit more from a cross solution than a ordinary hearing aid in the bad ear? (edited for spelling error)
@ChristyD97
@ChristyD97 8 месяцев назад
A CROS device is used when there is normal or near normal hearing in one ear and the opposite ear cannot benefit from a hearing aid.....at all for whatever reason as Dr. Cliff described in the video. So, the point at which a person would benefit more from a CROS device (devise sends sounds from bad ear side to a device worn on the good ear) than a traditional hearing aid (which provides amplified sound on the bad ear only) would be when that bad ear is unusable. I do not recommend a CROS device if the person can at all benefit from a traditional hearing aid. And the point at which an ear is determined to be unaidable can be different depending on the person and their hearing system as a whole. Hope this helps.

I have SSD from an acoustic neuroma. I currently use oticon cross. Do you recommend custom ear molds for the good ear or an open dome? Thanks!
@popperfrozy
@popperfrozy 8 месяцев назад
I have one-sided deafness from Meniere's disease. I have an Oticon cros hearing aid setup - it's ok, but really not a great solution. I find that when I up the volume, it tends to drown out the hearing in my good ear, and hearing is still bad in noisy situations where all the sounds get jumbled. Better than nothing, but not the solution I was hoping for. I want to avoid surgical solution.

Great video! I wonder if you could provide more information on when and if the Resound Nexia will be compatible with Cochlear America implants. We're told that they 'eventually' will be, but clearly they've already launched without this compatibility. Cochlear America implant users are ReSounds' most loyal customers- we literally can't switch companies! Treating us as an afterthought is a real disappointment.

I'm sure it will be soon. Just know that the Omnia is still an excellent option for Cochlear Americas CI users.

You'll likely need a CROS, Bone Anchored Hearing Aid, or Cochlear Implant.

After surgery for a vestibular schwannoma I have no ear function on one side. Even with a Bicros hearing aid it is next to impossible to locate where a sound is coming from. Also balance is not good and when I turn my head is dampens the vestibular system in the opposite ear. Making balance even worse.
