I put together two more pits, copying the same design from my first pit, but with slight variations on materials. I also planted trees into the pits during construction.
Layers from bottom to top on pit #3 include:
Prickly pear cactus pads
Mesquite branches
Soil
Bag of leaves
Mesquite branches
Coffee grounds
Soil
Donkey manure
Mesquite branches
Soil
Cover crop seeds
Light layer of soil
Light layer of sifted wood chips
Layers from bottom to top on pit #4 include:
Prickly pear cactus pads
Mesquite branches
Expired meats & broths
Bag of leaves
Soil
Mesquite branches
Donkey manure
Soil
Mesquite branches
Coffee grounds
Soil
Cover crop seeds
Light layer of soil
Light layer of sifted wood chips

Few drylands have this much love poured into them.

Hey ROT, I am trying to bring this place to life, though it definitely isn't easy. Happy to document my journey along the way. Thanks for your comments, they help!

Those Old Meats finally got the dignified burial they deserved. It's all thanks to one of them wearing a gold earring, donated by the _Old Meats Dignified Burial Trust._ Forever in our hearts, there will live on a greener pasture of middle Texas known as #OldMeatsWaldPit A moment's silence, if you will. A toast to Old Meats! Shniffle! :') #BurialsForOldMeats #NoOldMeatsLeftBehind #OldMeats19

Great work ! Let me ask you something, when you are shovelings off the wood chip layer, did you notice if your native soil is significantly more humid than if it hadn't been covered with wood chips ?
@WestTexasGardenExperiment
@WestTexasGardenExperiment 3 года назад
Hey Mateus, thanks! I haven't noticed the soil really being more humid, but we haven't had much rain in a long time. I do notice that the soil to wood chip interface is darker compared to the soil that is deeper down. There's also lots of mycelium at the lower wood chip layer, as well as the upper soil layer. The lower level of soil is parched and lifeless for the most part.

Great video sir! I would love to see a follow up video showing how things are progressing. I do have one recommendation, I would add mycorrhizae fungi to the soil to help breakdown the organic material faster and make it more readily available for your fruit trees. Check out mycorrhizae fungi, they're powerhouses

Hello, thank you for the suggestion. I’ll give an update on these when there’s something worth reporting. A continuous plague of grasshoppers have wiped out most of my plants this summer 😢

Looks great! I'm curious though, what's the reason for leaving the center untouched?
@WestTexasGardenExperiment
@WestTexasGardenExperiment 3 года назад
Hey James, I do that to allow myself something to plant the tree into. I figured the tree will do better in pure soil in the beginning, then as the roots start to reach out, they can tap into the good materials in the pits. That two foot wide center mound is plenty of soil for the smaller sizes of trees that I typically buy. If someone wanted to plant a bigger tree, they would probably need to leave a larger circle of soil in the middle.
@jamesmorris9520
@jamesmorris9520 3 года назад
That makes sense. Might explain why some of my trees didn't do so well being planted into low hugel mounds.

Hugel donut, like it! Do you think you'll have to add soil, as all the stuff you chucked in decomposes and presumably gets smaller?
@WestTexasGardenExperiment
@WestTexasGardenExperiment 3 года назад
Hey Thomas, I might have to at some point. When I’ve built compost piles, they usually shrink quite a bit. Maybe the wood and roots will help to stabilize it somewhat.

Btw @@WestTexasGardenExperiment amazed how green things are looking your way. Here (Hidalgo, Mexico) the rains are yet to arrive. I've put loads of locally sourced cover seed down, and nothing showing just yet

We haven't got much rain here either, so I've been watering everything with a hose. Some plants are getting some worm tea on the weekends. Most of my veggie and flower seeds have yet to germinate. Are you watering your cover crop seeds?

@@WestTexasGardenExperiment Maybe you can integrate the depressions with the rest of your earthworks so they can fill up with water.
@WestTexasGardenExperiment

Hello, that's a good idea! I'll have to think how to route that since they are uphill from the swales a little bit. I'd also need to figure out how to calm the rain runoff enough to where it doesn't wash out the pits. Maybe I could have one the house gutters drain into the pits first, and then go into the swales afterwards. I'll add this to my "figure out how to do" list. Thanks!
