I decided to throw the hand carved version on the thumbnail so everyone can see there isn't much of a difference. Thanks!

Fast and simple way to make nice trees that allows easy hand access to the miniatures fighting in the forest. You could put a magnet at the top of 2-3 of them and make seperate canopies for when you need a canopy to illustrate obstructed vissibility from towers/walls/cliffs/etc. And the canopies themselves can double as bushes when not on a trunk.

That's an awesome idea. I make some like that.

Quick, easy, looks nice, could be a basis for a more complete, complex tree if you wanted (with leaves or whatever, or fungi, or a hole with a bird, etc.), can put minis on top, very nice!

Thanks a lot! I like the hole with a bird idea.

As always, you seem to do things differently from the mainstream of everyone else and I think that is incredible! Whatever compels you to do that, please keep doing it. I love it went you say you want things done fast and don’t want to have to wait for lots of extra steps. I think the trees without branches and leaves is an incredible idea and they look incredible for game play. I am willing to bet that your creativity is so advanced, that you can find a way to make optional tops of the tress with interchangeable pieces that you can go from a tree like you made with no tops, to trees with different tops that can easily be added by fitting them into place. Hopefully this makes sense.

Thank you so much for the kind words! It really does mean a lot. I'm definitely considering taking a tree with interchangeable tops. It could prove very useful.

I'd actually made several of a similar look, though in a very different method. I used a lot of toilet paper rolls, sealed the ends with card stock from the packaging of soft drinks, but added a few washers to one end and stuffed them with crumpled up paper before sealing, then used tissue paper with thinned white glue to work on the larger parts off of it and covering the surfaces save the underside, and used hot glue for the actual texture overtop of everything else. Without adjustment, they look great as redwood type giants, but you can adjust the size by cutting the roll and coiling it before some more hot glue to shrink it. The consistent height of them tends to make people see it as a mental shorthand that they extend far upwards.

Great tutorial! I do have a question though: I’m currently playing through the Icewind Dale campaign, so I’m wondering if you have any recommendations for making the tree trunks look like they’ve endured an extreme winter?

If I were doing more weathered tree trunks I would scuff up the bark a lot more. Maybe use the wire brush first then add some larger streaking and gouges with a cheap serrated knife. Also, a more dull paint job. Maybe more of a mottle of grey and brown rather than solid brown. Then add a dusting of white at the base of the trunks, or even some snow flock, to resemble the cold environment. You could also add some smaller hollowed out tree trunks, possibly covered in holes, for flavor. It would be more carving but as long as you texture them like wood people will recognize them as tree trunks.
