Great tree with one serious flaw as stated in this video - those dang gumballs that drop by the hundreds, if not thousands, each year. For that reason, I would never have one in my yard. It's a shame, too, because they are nice trees to look at, especially in the fall. Very colorful.

In Louisiana these things grow in any soil type. On the tallest of hills whether it be compacted or sandy soil, good soil or bad, in the wettest of swamps and even the cleanest of gutters. They also spread like crazy with root suckering and 15 trees can be all part of the same tree.

Nitrogen fixing tree as well even though the Black Locust gets all that credit the sweet gum is probably a better option

Liquidambar styraciflua is no longer considered to be Hamamelidaceae. It is now classified in Altingiaceae.

Is it related to black walnut?

It's not a walnut. The wood looks like the walnut tree that he mentioned but not the black walnut

It behaves like a sycamore. Loves water, poofy seeds, grows fast, wood has good looks, but not great for construction, lives a very long time.
