Trek Domane AL DISC 4 review: an astounding and affordable all-roader

I simply love that some of the most interesting and versatile road bikes on the market currently sit at the budget end of the spectrum. And that’s exactly the case for Trek’s new Domane AL Disc, an all-road-esq bike based around a budget-minded aluminium frame.
Much like Trek’s more premium carbon fibre Domane offerings, this new aluminium version aims to offer plenty of versatility via combining (super-)wide tyre clearance with a comfortable fit and a sporty road-bike feel.
Put another way, the new Domane AL Disc slips snugly in between two other aluminium drop bar bikes in Trek’s range. There’s the more expensive, road-focused, and performance-oriented Emonda ALR; and there’s the road-leaning gravel bike that is the Checkpoint AL. And I truly believe a bike like the Domane AL Disc is the right choice if you can’t decide between these two. That of course assumes you can actually find one to buy.
At our recent Field Test the Victorian High Country’s endless alpine roads and gravel paths were the perfect place to cap off our testing of Trek’s latest affordable road bike. Let’s dive in.

@@zoso73 Unfortunately like 2 days after I picked up my bike from the store it started to snow and it's been very cold ever since (like from -5 down to -15, with wind). I got some 45km of riding in and so far it has felt great! I should clarify though that this is my first road bike so I am not a serious cyclist! But I actually took this one to a hilly gravel roads and it survived pretty well even compared to my previous bike that had suspensions and wider tires. I will probably need to adjust the handle bar position and saddle a bit since the frame is slightly too big, but otherwise I am very happy about the purchase. Luckily the cold weather seems to be warming up a bit (I did not invest on winter tires) and so I can go for a ride soon again!

Thanks for reviewing a reasonable bike that many can afford. I think simplicity like this should be a trend in 2021 at all price points. I'd love to see a return to more external cabling, threaded BBs and round seatposts with traditional clamps. Even at the higher end, field serviceability, reliability and durability should be higher priorities than they are today. The more you ride, the more you appreciate a bike that's ready to go every day without a lot of fuss.

I got a Trek Domane AL5 disc since 2020, absolutely loving it! The only thing I had to replace after two years was the handlebar-tape, and recently I bought tubeless 35mm skinwall graveltyres from Schwalbe. The handlebar tape I use now is thicker and more comfy than the original one. Plus the tape is red now which actually looks crazy good.😎

I have a 2017 Domane ALR with Iso Speed. I love it. It clears a set of Panaracer Gravel King SK 35mm tires, which measures closer to 38mm actually. I did Grinduro and Set Grvl on that bike and never felt underbiked... only under skilled haha... I've even done some light single track with my mtb buddies. As long as it's not muddy, it holds its own. I guess this new model would be even more capable, although it's missing the Iso Speed. I managed to build mine down to 20 pounds with Zipp Course 30 wheels and Apex 1 drivetrain.

Got about 200 miles on mine great bike I love it. Weight maters most on rotating mass like the wheels like on a race car. I'm 69 and have been doing 12-25 miles daily on some crappy roads . I'll be hitting a new asphalt bike path soon. Drop some gears and it gets me through some mowed grassy areas when I need to. Shifts smoothly also. Was going to get AL 5 but tried this at trek dealer and liked it. Bought a bunch of accessories and it was 2303.00 OTD with 8.76% tax. I like the hydraulic brakes better than the AL 3 but they were both good.

Another great review guys. Aluminium bikes are very attractive especially as model-types are similar across a range, the only big difference being the material. Aluminium is a great frame material and provides a different type of ride to, say carbon, but at a more reasonable cost therefore presenting great value. Would an alu frame such as this Trek easily fit with a more flexible carbon seat-post, I wonder? Bikes like these are robust and not that much heavier than similar carbon models & I'd rather take an alu bike out on a gravel 'blast' than a more expensive carbon one where I'd be fretting about possible scratches or possible expensive damage. Good also to see manufacturers focussing on & improving models at a lower price level.

I have been riding the Trek Domane AL 2 Disc as a winter/commuter bike for a month now and I am very pleased with it. The AL 4 costs twice as much as the AL 2 in Germany, so I ride the Claris R2000 8-speed groupset for 1-2 years and then replace it with a GRX or 105 groupset, which funnily enough is much cheaper than buying the AL 4 or 5 directly. I'm 175 cm tall, 82 cm inseam and I also ride a 54 frame, just swapped the -7° 90 mm stem for a 105 mm with -17° and changed the 42 handlebar for a 40 cm short reach compact bar. Oh, and of course I slammed the stem. What I have problems with is the paintwork, which is very scratch-prone and I had already partially re-painted it. The colour Purple Abyss is identical to the Volkswagen LA4X Ultra Violet Metallic colour.

@7mpowerd
@7mpowerd 3 года назад
@@assadmoney color difference, the AL4 uses formula Rx-142 rear hub bearing vs AL5 is bontrager alloy both use shimano free hub, the AL4 uses comp VR handlebars vs the AL5 uses the bontrager elite iso zone VR-SR. Now the big changes is that the AL4 uses shimano Tiagra groupset including bottom bracket vs the AL5 uses all shimano 105 that just got released recently. So the Al4 is a 10 speed cassette vs 105 11 speed. The AL5 is 22.5 lbs vs the AL4 23.11. This due to the 105 vs tiagra and the lighter better handlebars. For how little more the AL5 is over the 4 I went AL5 to have the full shimano 105 vs tiagra. This way I don’t have to upgrade. 105 offers same ultegra/dura ace offer just a bit heavier is all. Vs tiagra you’re down a gear.

I've had 3 Domane's (2 Alu, 1 Carbon) but all had the rear isospeed. The alu Domane's no longer have this; that would be my only mark against this bike. Otherwise it's a nice bike; an ideal winter/ light gravel bike.

Would you say if you are looking for long term investment then a carbon version with isospeed is worth the value? Any issues with hydro discs rubbing?

@@PhiyackYuh I have sl5 and don’t find the isospeed to be a significant difference, i and 28 c tires but coz of bad roads it was still awful till I put 32c on. Frame compliance is marginal and is largely marketing. Makes very little difference in comfort compared to tires, saddle, etc

Disappointed official clearance is only 35 when the carbon version has 38. Was considering of getting the al version to save money and be able to put suspension seat post since it has a standard post as opposed to carbon options. Don’t want to get the checkpoint because I mostly ride roads and don’t want a bike that’s too sluggish or slow
@matskarlsson924

Is this because of the gear groups? I believe AL5 handles 38 without any issues though (Shimano 105).

This doesn't slip between the emonda and checkpoint... It's more like previous domanes and checkpoint, Emonda is a lightweight road bike, 1100 grams frame depending on frame size, aimed at being the lightest at each price point, domane al series is entry level alloy from trek, wide tires, disc brakes, endurance geometry or all road geometry, so it's going to be heavy... If you ride the previous domanes with disc brakes, this one is similar, not a very different bike... Scott speedster 20 disc

Heave is a relative term. Heavy in terms of marketed bike weight? Yes. Heavy in practical terms? No. You’re not going to go much faster with a few extra kilos. Still light enough to carry if that’s a concern and light enough to ride. Shed that weight from your body

I bought Domane al4 disc a year ago! I upgraded both front and rear wheels to carbon wheels! It helps to improve my cycling speed and knocked out quite a fair bit of weights! However climbing is still a bit of challenge perhaps emonda AL series might be better for climbing? I don’t know 🤷‍♂️ Anyway riding on the flat terrains is very comfortable with 28c tyres front and rear

Anyone could advice me some decent lighter wheels, i don t plan to spend the amount needed for carbon wheels, so the budget is 300-500 euros for the set. I I saw the DT swiss G 1800 spline but may be mavic allroad could be better. I plan to mount 32-38 width tires. It is for 80%"road"( but very bulky ones destroyed by SUV and endless digging for optical fiber and other networks).

Quite expensive for that weight and what it offers. I bought a Cube Attain with 105 weight is about the same for under 1400,- €.

Trek offers lifetime warranty on frame sets, Cube only 3 years. That alone is worth paying extra for
@captainLoknar
@captainLoknar 3 года назад
It's Trek though. I get it. Cube is the best value based on specs. 1800 for a Trek isn't that much. Now look at other brands offering the same for 3000 and 4000. *looking at Salsa, Davinci, Niner* nobody can explain Norco also offers good value. I got a Scott. Basically any of those are good if you have it in stock.

@captainLoknar

@@roland4507 yeah that's my question. but I measure same weight and groupset, the Trek seems to have much better wheels and I think tires, which are expensive. Plus the frame is warrantied and renoun. I'm not a huge fan of Trek value/price but it's really not bad at all. Those other brands I mentioned however... and specialized is halfway there... ;-)

@@roland4507 the real question is not the price but does the geometry of the bike suits the individual’s functionality? Newbies and veterans always looking for best specs, lightweight etc. endurance bike for the most part works for majority of the consumers.

@@VeloVeloVeloTV right and so I was wondering just why didn't Trek used the Alpha 300 that they use to make the Emonda ALR and turn this into a Domane ALR. This really is an intresting bike; 27.2 round seatpost, English Threaded BB, wide tyre clearance, fender mounts, a black paint job that looks good. The only thing that's kept me wondering is the use of materials; Alpha 100 (heavy) over the lighter Alpha 300
