I just ordered one of these today in the graphite gray color from a local Trek dealer. Can’t wait to get it and ride it. Is there a way you can just have the rear taillight on and not the front one? I noticed when you turn the lights on they both come on.
Congrats on the new bike! Not quite sure how to do that, but I’m sure the local Trek shop will know if that is possible. They were very helpful for us.
DO NOT BUY THIS BIKE IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT YOUR DEALERS RETURN POLICY Some of these have severe issues with charging. If your bike is affected be ready for a world of pain. If it work's it is amazing though.
Taking the time to ride the bike as you did with the hill work really shows the machines capability. I really liked seeing the lighter profile of this bike and might add a suspension seat post if I get one. I can appreciate that the battery isn't huge but the lighter build will encourage more rider input so its a great model from Trek. Cheers for a very thorough review.
You're welcome! Glad it helped show you the capabilities of the bike. When the bike is lighter you definitely don't need a big battery and its much easier to pedal on lower pedal assist modes, plus the torque sensor gives nice rider feedback.
I have had the bike for two months now and about a 150 miles on it. I still love this bike and getting a great work out because I am taking on rides that are longer and more varied types of trails. At 75, I'm feeling more like I did when I was 40. No regrets so far and super happy with my purchase. Its going in shortly for the free factory maintenance check and hopefully I will have it back in a few days.
I have been riding the Trek "Shift 3" hybrid for almost 7 years, typical ride is 10-12 miles averaging 15-16 mph. 3 weeks ago, I finally rode my wife's Townie Go! 7D eBike and enjoyed the uphill pull and higher speed. So, I just went out and bought the Trek DS2+ last week and it's a dream - seriously. I still get the great cardio when the motor is off but engage the motor briefly for tougher hills. Bottom line is that I can ride longer distances for biking enjoyment and still get the great exercise! I highly recommend this bike. It's not a low power moped if that's what you're looking for. One thing to be mindful of - if you engage the motor in Turbo you will hit 20mph pretty quickly. At that point, the pedal assist will stop pushing. When the assist stops, it feels like the bike is trying to slightly break, but it's because you are back to your own efforts instead of the motor. If you want to go over 20 mph, just keep pedaling, but you are on your own power.
I have one. Bought in summer 2022 and had problems with the controller. Trek took care of it and replaced with a new upgraded one. That was all taken care at the local shop. That’s why you buy from a reputable national brand. This is a great bike. Love the look of the hidden battery, but you need to bring indoors in winter. If you live in a hilly area you will need the extra battery for any decent range
I wish the battery was removable and could be independently charged. In the cold Winter or hot Summer, the battery will be in extreme temperature conditions. That will more than likely diminish the lifespan of the battery if the bike is stored inside a non insulated garage. Therefor, it would be best to bring the bike inside. But, I don't have room for 2 bikes in my house. That is probably the only thing that would keep me from buying this bike. It was a lot of fun to ride when I test drove one at the store the other day. I really liked the fact that it was almost as light as a regular bike.
I didn't even think of this, so I'm glad I read your comment. I live in Saskatchewan, so it gets down to -10C in my attached, insulated garage on the coldest days (-45C). I'd have to store this thing indoors...no thanks.
I just bought this bike this week. I bought it based on your revue of the bike. I love the bike, as I'm turning 75 in a week, it became a birthday present that I bought for myself. I actually rewatched this video to catch any commentary I may have missed on the first watch. So far so good, I love the bike because of the simplicity, and lightness. I ride on road and trails......thank you.
Awesome! You’re welcome and Congrats on your new bike! We are very happy to hear you are out there riding it and enjoying it! Hope you enjoy many miles ahead of you.
I'm 74 and just test road a medium. I need a large. I really liked it. Have an Electra townie go ebike now, but it does not handle well and is heavy. I would rather ride more upright but the bar can be raised. . Do you have any issues not being upright?
I've been trying to find a cheaper bike spec'ed like this, but they are all at least 10# heavier. I think the torque sensor makes the hub drive doable.
Hey mate, very helpful video. Can i ask how tall are you? Im 5'10 abd just bought a medium. It feels great but I was just on the cusp between a M and L. Hope it I didn't get too small but it feels great after some shorter test drives
I just don't get the pedal assist on this bike. I believe you have to keep peddling while the motor is on? What's with that? I much prefer throttle assist.
Yes you have to pedal to get the assist. Depending on style of bike, the harder you pedal the faster you can go. Or some you just have to keep the pedals moving to activate the motor.
Is the hyena smartphone app not available in the United States? In the EU it’s recommended to use the HRA companion app, and you can customize the power of each level. You don’t need to take it to a trek store to adjust the power. My bike is still on order, but the companion app seems to also have a speedometer and show the battery percentage. It connects via Bluetooth, so maybe it lowers the overall distance you’ll get from it though. It’s a trade-off, but I will likely use it when the bike gets here next week.
Not real happy! Picked mine up yesterday. After a PDI with sales person, we both missed the rubbing rear disk. I thought it might be a break in thing, so I rode for ten miles, intentionally riding the brakes, hoping that would help. It didn't! Today I went back to the dealer, where they acknowledged and corrected the issue. I checked the bike before I left the bike shop, it was fine. After a twenty mile ride using the motor at a minimum, I got it home and sure enough the disk rubs, again! The cassette side does not seem to tighten enough to prevent the wheel from shifting under torque. This may be a warranty issue before long... Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.
Got this bike about two weeks ago and I love it to bit's. We have a hill near to us 1:10 and makes light work of the hill. Just got the extender battery yesterday so it tells me should do at least 75 miles. Great review Thanks
I have owned the Trek Dual Sport +2 for about 3 weeks. I do have problems climbing steep hills where the motor cuts out every time during the hill climb. The Trek shop is thinking its either a motor problem or the torque sensor. Dissapointing that I have had the problem since new but the dealer is keen to get it fixed. Has anyone had a similar problem? To be continued.
I just purchased yesterday so I’m fresh off reading the manual. It says hold minus for 2 sec to turn on. Then press and hold plus key while pushing. When finished, press minus key again to turn off. It warns to not use walk assist if pedals aren’t touching the ground.
Their is a way to take the battery out, but not easily removable like some other bikes. A Trek store or dealer would be able to help change the battery if needed.
Thanks for the review. Would be grateful of models from other manufacturers with similar (or better) weight and at similar price point to consider? Looking for an electric bike for my wife that can manage some light trails (not jumps).
Not sure how light duty the trails are you're thinking, but our first thought is the ride1up turris? It would be a great bike for everyday riding. We have a review on the channel if you're curious.
I find that mine is efficient enough that I often peddle without assist on the flats on gravel or asphalt rides. Don’t really notice the additional weight compared to my lighter mountain bike. I love it.
Regarding battery storage in winter. Will the battery be OK as long as the temp doesn't drop below freezing. I live in the south and I my garage never gets below 40.
Just rode this bike at my local Trek store and it was a really positive experience. I've only ridden mid drive e mountain bikes with either the TQ 120nm HPR or a Bosch 80nm motor. Didn't see any reviews prior to the test ride and I was shocked at how smoothly this bike adds in the power. Well done Trek and a spot on review!
Thanks! we were very surprised at the ride experience as well, nice to see the big name companies getting in at this price point and still delivering great service.
A range extender is listed on the Trek website for $1100, they are only available for purchase through dealers. We would encourage verifying the expense and availability from your local Trek dealer.
Do you remember how much battery you consumed on that ride? Great review! I didn't think I'd want a hub motor bike until I rode that in the showroom. I've been thinking about it ever since.
