Absolutely gorgeous model and renders. Love those illuminated, animated bussards. The window details are awesome, too. Bravo!

I like the idea of a period of time between The Cage and TMP where a lot different versions of upgraded Constitutions are running around out there. Like the Yorktown variant and other Phase 2 variant upgrades.

Congratulations on reaching this milestone. The phase 2 version of the ship would have looked wonderful in the movies, I particularly love the bussards on the front of the nacelles and I like the retaining of the original style opf deflector dish.

Very awesome episode guys! I love the rendering of the Phase II Enterprise. Makes me wish the nacelles on the TMP refit had a little more color to them.

I mean for me, the TMP refit is a near-perfect ship. Seeing the orange-crimson on the nacelles of the Phase II refit makes me wish they added that to the front of the TMP nacelles, and maybe a little blue, or at least a brighter purple, on the side chiller vents.

The P2 model seems like the secondary hull is squished, it looks to me like a fat raindrop.I do agree that the nacelles on the TMP refit were just a little too 'bland', no 'action' suggested, two static objects.

Agreed re Tmp nacelles It appears tmp era ships had no bussards!? 1701 refit, Miranda's, Excelsior, Oberths, etc How did tos movie era ships collect interstellar hydrogen, deuterium for matter fuel?

I find it amusing that a guy called Kellogg designed the TOS shuttle because it does look like it was made from corn-flake packets.

Interesting: the flattened nacelles and swept back pylons were actually Matt Jeffries' design? That was what I loved most about the TMP Enterprise and I had always attributed those elements to Andrew Probert. As it turns out, he simply "streamlined" them and fleshed out the details - which I still think he did masterfully. I agree with Tobias Richter though: these Enterprise v 1.5 nacelles seem awkward. I am also not a fan of the circular torpedo tubes. EDITED TO ADD: that being said, according to Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise, when it came to refit the ship two different engineering firms competed for the contract in order to create a pair of warp field generators that was most efficient with the new linear intermix chamber. According to that publication, the designer of the original nacelles created a prototype but ultimately lost out. In a way, these nacelles could be interpreted to be an imagination of that nacelle prototype.

Jefferies said "Mike Landon kept looking at me out of the corner of his eye." So he said Roddenberry kept bothering him about the design and Landon wasn't happy about him not totally focusing on LITTLE HOUSE. Also notice the E's in OLESONS MERCANTILE are upswept like STAR TREK.

For me, I really like this design and its a natural change for the Constitution to have slight alterations for a refit. As things advanced you swap out parts, as you would with any sort of vessel that could have possibly taken years to build. Plus, a huge overhaul would be uncalled for. Only things that would have a huge increase in capabilities would be added, not the entire hull being removed and then new hull plating added, unless it has seen several decades of service. Such as the refit from the films, which makes sense. It had been 20 years since the 5 year mission, and in that time having only had upgrades to its bridge, engines, and main deflector. Unless it had upgrades made just before Captain Pike took command, which is possible.

Tobias Richter rocks! Superb render of my favorite Enterprise! It truly looks like a refit rather than a reconstruction. The TMP Enterprise, while beautiful, was over engineered by Probert, in conflict with Jefferies concept of keeping the hull smooth, and not too busy, as most of the tech on the ship would be on the inside. And, it was altered too much to be a refit. It looked like an entirely new ship. Probert's version is believable as Enterprise A, which in fact WAS a different ship.

Congrats on 200, excellent video choice. This is a fascinating take on it, it's almost a Phase 1.5 version of the ship. If you look at some of the other Phase II stuff, there's a lot more chances to the secondary hull and it's closer to the TMP Enterprise. As Tobias says, this was a conscious decision and works to great effect here. The red bussards is a neat take and looks fantastic.

I confess to having mixed feelings all around. I absolutely *love* the original TOS design. I think it is very cool and has a wonderful "busy" look to it which gives it a more "real" feel, IMHO. I've always loved the colorful and active nacelle caps (the bussard collectors) and missed them with the TMP version of the ship. Indeed, I would have preferred a similar effect for the end caps once they went with the domes at the back, but that's just me and would have probably been way too expensive to do during the TOS era. I also liked the idea of the saucer domes being the ship's weapons emplacements. This would imply the dome over the shuttle bay was another one which would give more-or-less complete coverage. However, that is strictly MY head cannon to fire. :-) This all being said, I am a major fan of the TMP design. I think it is a great looking update to the original design and I love the more angular look to it. While missing the lighted and active bussard collectors, I think the overall nacelle design works REALLY well and fits with the rest of the ship. While I like the large side door on the saucer section for a main gang plank (and possibly a method of ship-to-ship transfers), I'm not a fan of the individual docking ports scattered throughout the ship. Their choice of locations (mid secondary hull, photon torpedo launcher room, and main bridge) seem odd to me and make me wonder why they're there. They also impress me as an additional security risk (as noted in a _Voyager_ episode, "Blink of an Eye"). The other change I like are the additional large windows: the VIP area just below the bridge, the botany area on the secondary hull (blue lights), and the bay windows of the rec area. The PII version is a nice mix of these two. It's easy to see how this version is an upgrade from the original TOS design. Most of the design and layout is the same. While I generally like the updated nacelle design, I'm not sure it works here. Certainly not as is. That being said, I really like that they kept the active, colorful bussard collectors. I wish they kept some of the action the same (i.e. the spinning circular lines). Perhaps if they have vertical lines moving toward the center of the ship? I don't know. The circular torpedo tubes (or tube in the original design), certainly fits with the overall curves of the ship (perhaps the reason the angular nacelles don't quite work), however I still prefer the angular design of the TMP version. Also, it implies the lack of a rear firing arc (would continuing that design toward the back have been that hard?). I would have like a TMP version of the back of the bridge area (i.e. squared off instead of seeing the two elevator shafts). I remember reading somebody else's comment (in a different video) that the PII design was an excellent refit design whereas the TMP design was better as a new ship (i.e. NCC-1701-A). I agree with this assessment, though I'll be the first to admit the PII design needs work before it would be movie ready (especially for a 1979 audience).

Phase 2 Enterprise is very epic ! sad it never made it in a movie or TV series it would have made a lot more sense of conversion or Refit than the final Refit is but i guess it was still not considered good enough .......... ah well what could have been ........ but still cool ship !! :)
@Zarrov

Here is headcannon thought: progression of refits as it should have been 1. The Phase 2 model, but with non-lit nacelles (no bussard collectors) but with blue light on the inside. NCC-1701, time: Original Series 2. Phase 2 model but with phase 2 nacelles.Time: Second tv series era 3. Phase 2 model with Phase 2 nacelles and with TMP deflector dish (final refit) And then move to Excelsior class as it was in the movies, then to Ambassador. Its a logical proression.

Mr. Richter's work is always so splendid. I love the work he did with Axanar, and this ship is so well done it makes me a little sad this ship never made it into a show or movie. What 3D rendering program does he use? What do you guys use at Trekyards? I make models in Google Sketchup, but that program is meant for architectural concepts, and is very limited in its ability to make beautiful renders such as this.

I could see this Phase II design being added to canon as a test-bed ship.....say Bonhomme Richard class Block II/ Block III. It would've been part of Starfleet's Acquisition, Testing, & Logistics Division during the 2260's as the new power systems & other upgrades were being developed & tested.

Is it me or the connection point of the nacelles is wider than the connector of the pylon? Either the connection point should be shorter, or the upper end of the pylon should be wider. It'll look much better that way.
@freagarthach4228
@freagarthach4228 7 лет назад
No, not to the secondary hull, to the nacelles. There is clearly a port of some kind on the bottom of the nacelles, a bump, or what ever, I don't how to call it. The upper end of the pylons, IMHO, is now wide enough to fit in that port, so to me it looks kinda off. Don't get me wrong, I love the whole view and wings-like shape, it's just feels off there, that's all.

You know, "Admiral" Foley, you CAN'T just revoke a Captain's rank on a temporal/alternate reality whim. Of course, unless you assemble a gaggle of co-conspirators and one good HANGIN' JUDGE for one darn good clam bake -- er, Court Martial! P.S. -- A good engineer ALWAYS resists getting promoted past "Commander" for as long as possible. Who wants to command a Starship anyway when it's more fun designing and building them?

Is it definitive that the Phase II Enterprise was intended to have blue nacelle caps, or was that simply something done in early concept art? I recall the A-Wing concept for Star Wars was to have a blue hull, but this did not work well with blue screen effects so it was changed. This makes one wonder if the blue nacelle tips would likely not have been used for the same reason? I prefer the amber used by Tobias myself anyway. (Apparently Eaglemoss agreed :)
