Hey, I wanted to thank you tons for producing these videos. I started on my t56 from my 93 Trans Am in April of 2019, ever since my 3/4 gear keys snapped. I just finished it 10 minutes ago. I don’t know how I would have been able to complete this without these videos. I did everything the right way/how the pros do it and I even got my mainshaft machined by Texas Drivetrain Performance as well (Jason there was super helpful). Up to this point I haven’t done anything as advanced as this and I’m glad someone thought to share their learning experience with the internet so everyone could learn. Thank you so much again and I hope your cts is running great still!!! P.S. Instead of a normal rebuild, I decided to faceplate my trans ;) Good day to you sir!

I've watched all four videos - some of them twice. So informative. Thanks, Chris. My 2007 CTS-V has 237,000 Kms on it and is running fine but I can see a rebuild needing to be done sometime in its lifetime. That said I choose to burn gas in fifth gear rather than lug sixth up a hill or even into a headwind while on the highway, as I've read that lugging can take out fifth; sixth; and reverse. With the aerodynamics of a barn I like to err on the side of the small expense...!

When installing a new input shaft only, is it necessary to change the countershaft bearing shims? Since they are set before the input shaft is installed, it shouldn’t effect them, correct?

The T56 Tremec transmission in my car occasionally slips out of second & third gear which has been more noticeable when the weather is cooler,the transmission has done about 332,200 kms and is in need of an overhaul. Since I only have 1 car to drive so I will be looking for another transmission to rebuild,on the Gumtree website (in Australia) someone in South Australia is selling one with a damaged 4th gear & countershaft gear, brand new aftermarket gears cost about as much as used gears on Ebay,the transmission is available for $550 or $600 AUD but would blow out to about $2000 AUD transmission once it is freighted to me & parts are ordered, then it would be like brand new. Someone else is selling one for about $500 AUD in Sydney ,it just needs new 3rd gear synchros so one of them would be the best bet. If I came across a worn spline on the mainshaft I would either just use Loctite 660 to fill the void between the spline & gear or take the shaft & gear to a local engineer (Teterin) where they can spray weld the shaft to reclaim the worn surface. I would look at doing it once I hopefully score a job soon plus I have to replace the camshaft & lifters on the easter long weekend (hopefully),I bought a used stock 12560965 camshaft yesterday locally for $35 AUD which is as good as a new one anyway. The LS1's in Australia use the LS6 intake stock from 2001 (mines a 2002 car) but they used the 99-00 Camaro camshaft in all of the LS1 engines. Just other goodies I have to buy for it such as a new timing chain,new hydraulic lifters,oil pump,timing cover gasket kit, intake manifold seal kit,exhaust manifold gaskets,cylinder head gasket & bolt kit, etc.

When you pressed the 5/6 gear on the main shaft, did you support the input shaft while doing so? I am having a similar issue with my new shaft and new 5/6 gear. Unfortunately the new shaft doesn't have threads in the end to press the gear on with. I wasn't sure if it would be ok to press against the front cover or would it be better to support the end of the input shaft to press against.
@SlideruleRacingProducts
@SlideruleRacingProducts Год назад
When I placed the transmission on the press, it appears that I just rested it on the case. The press fit shouldn't be *that* high, so it should be OK.

Hey Chris, had a question for you. I’m swapping the tailhousing for my T56 and I can’t get it to go on. It’s an aftermarket AMP unit, and I’ve transferred all bearings and reverse idler gear. Is there a trick to it, or am I supposed to have it in a certain gear? Thanks for your time, and great videos.

Thank you for the video! It is videos like this one that take the guess work out of the mysteries of a manual transmission. I will now tackle this job without hesitation. How was the end result? All well with the T56? I have an issue: Are there any areas I need to focus on as I have a terrible vibration that is speed dependent. If I am running 60mph+ the vibration starts and only increases with speed. New/different rear center section, two driveshafts both balanced by independent shops etc. etc. and no change.Push the clutch in and let the driveshaft rotate the output shaft and its the same vibration. I feel it is in the back half of the transmission. Maybe tail housing bushing? Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks,Tony
@SlideruleRacingProducts
@SlideruleRacingProducts 5 лет назад
I drove it for another 30K+ miles and it was still working great when I sold it. On mine, the one thing to pay attention to was the 5/6 gear fit. If that is loose, you'll definitely get vibrations. I had the shaft repaired, but in retrospect, it probably would have only cost slightly more to replace the gear and shaft with new.

@@SlideruleRacingProducts I know it has been a while but I have to ask another question after re-watching the video series. You used an M12 threaded rod to set endplay of the counter-shaft, how did you use the same hole to check the counter-shaft extension? If the threaded rod threads into the counter-shaft and there is now preload on that shaft, how were you able to check the extension?
@SlideruleRacingProducts
@SlideruleRacingProducts 3 года назад
@@anthonylawrencesnow Go back and watch #3 again. You'll see it doesn't thread into the countershaft - it goes through it and then you use a nut on the far side and I machined a small sleeve spacer on the front side - when setting the preload on the countershaft. Then when you do the extension, it threads into that, if I recall correctly (it's been a while).

Hey Chris, excellent videos. Really helping me with my rebuild. My transmission has the exact same issue with the 5/6 cluster gear being loose. I actually today just called Jason at texas drivetrain to get a repaired shaft. I have a question for you: when you go to put the gear on, can you start it in the mainshaft splines before the press fit starts to grab the gear? I dont want to start to press it on and have to rotate it after because the splines wont line up. Also can you put this gear on first before the counter shaft extension? What do you think of heating the cluster gear in an oven to assist installation? Thanks a lot man

Hi Mike, Yes - I was able to get the splines started. I also made sure to greases them up. I think putting the gear in an oven first is a great idea.. However, I don't think you can put this gear on first, unfortunately.

How much pressure did your 5/6 gear take to get on? I have a new shaft and trying to press the 5/6 gear on and it seem to have stopped. Its got another 1/2 inch or more to go. I'm afraid to put to much pressure down on the shaft.

Do you have a suggestion on putting the Shift rail bolts in? When I put mine in, it locks everything up and would not let me shift it. They also would not go in evenly. The top left one only goes 3/4 way in and then stops. The right one goes all the way down but locks everything up.
@SlideruleRacingProducts
@SlideruleRacingProducts 3 года назад
It sounds like your shift rails aren't lined up properly with the case. My guess is that the whole assembly is probably twisted if you don't have one of the shift forks correctly installed in the gear assy.

mcgarnicle201 I think it was around a month start to finish but mostly because I had to send the main shaft out to get welded up for a larger diameter for the 5/6 gear and also because I broke my leg shortly after pulling the transmission from the car (you can see the crutches in some of the shots). When you pressed the 5th/6th gear assembly onto the main shaft did you take the front plate back off and support the shaft? Or did you press with everything together and transfer the force of the press into the front input bearing and race? This can brinell the bearing race and cause premature bearing failure.
@SlideruleRacingProducts
@SlideruleRacingProducts 5 лет назад
I'm not sure how you'd take the front plate off with the rest of the transmission assembled this far. If you are an idiot and press down with the full force of the press, then you're correct - you could damage the bearings, but the Tremec installation manual instructs to press this gear down in place.
