Very interesting. In my experience, there are "Dial" guys and "Hold" guys. The Dial guys twist knobs and the "Hold" guys look for impact and adjust to that point in the glass. The Dial guys tell me the reticle is too complicated. But I'm a ( OLD!) hold guy, so this seems much easier. At my age it's much easier to see the impact and the reticle than it is to attempt to refocus on the dial and then go back to the glass.

hold method is good because it saves the turrets, many have the illusion just because you have a night force scope that you can turn turrets and they always reset but they never do because the wear, though very small and undetectable still degrades even the best scopes, i think horus scopes are a great idea and very underated and those involved with these scopes are geniuses and reticle gods. scope adjustments need to nest and settle but constantly spinning knobs only degrades its repeatability and scopes like horus provide a solution for wear and tear but using "hold" instead of "clicks"

I just purchased a scope with the Tremor 3 . I am pretty confidant with dialing up but wind holds using this reticle are like another language right now. I need to start from the beginning. Here's a quick, easy, and accurate method for wind counters with virtually any BDC/ranging reticle, just calculate the MOA wind constant for prevailing weather conditions, do in-head wind counter equation, and adjust sight or favor from reticle with range card support for proper adjustment/hold in MOA or mils. Here's the formula: target distance in yards divided by 100 times wind value in mph divided by MOA wind constant. Example: .308 175 SMK at 2610 fps in standard atmospheric conditions shooting at 1000 yards the equation is 1000 yards divided by 100 times let's say a 10-mph wind divided by the constant of 11 as determined from prior trajectory calculation equals 9 MOA, 2.5 mils, or 90-inch favor.

Serious question: So i'm turning off spin drift on my kestrel. Dialing it on my scope. Then holding the mph in the reticle. How is this a better system when shooting movers. Now i'm holding wind and mover lead?
@HorusVision

"Better" is always a matter of opinion but many people find it much faster, particularly when needing to rapidly engage multiple targets at various ranges and speeds. Here is a video showing how to use with wind dots and time of flight for movers: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d5Ry8DdcF1I.html

Hmm... looks great... so you nul out spin drift and coriolis with a small windage turret adjustment then use the wind dots strictly for wind hold estimation?... this ought to increase ones rate of fire for engaging multiple targets at different distances from a single position like at a match stage... The thing I'm not getting after watching this is: you're talking about the 4th line. How does that line relate to the ballistics of a particular round at a different range, or, the other lines in the reticle?
@HorusVision
@HorusVision 7 лет назад
The 4th line and 2nd dot is just nice number at .95 mil to use, you could use others but for most setups the math works out well to start there so it's not a special line in any way, just an easy one to calibrate the wind dot value. Once you have that value every dot is the same value at any range as long as your equipment setup is the same.

I have watched this video at least 100 times. And I still am not 100% on getting the wind dot value. Are these steps correct: 1) using a kestrel or other software Find distance for your weapon where 4 mils is the elevation hold. 2) find the wind speed at 4 mils that equals or is as close to .95 mils as possible with direction being “full value” or 90 deg if target is 0 deg. Take that mph and divide by 2 for value of all dots. Is that correct?
@HorusVision
@HorusVision 3 года назад
All values and ranges are in MIL RADIAN and METERS based off a 100m Zero Distance using preloaded gun data for common-caliber rifles. 1) Power on your Kestrel and double-check that all adjustments and ranges are in MIL/Meter values. 2) Go to the ENVIRONMENT tab in your Kestrel and turn off Spin Drift. a) Remember to turn Spin Drift back on after you calibrate your Wind Dots. 3) Go to the WIND tab in your Kestrel and input a full-value wind. (3:00 or 9:00 wind direction) 4) Go to the RANGE CARD tab in your Kestrel and find the range in which 4mils is your elevation hold. 5) Adjust your wind value until you have as close to a .95mil hold at 4mils elevation as possible. a) Note that the value may not always be exactly 4mils elevation and 0.95mils wind. For example: Using 175SMK .308 at my atmospheric conditions, I have 4.09mils at 520meters with 1mil of wind @ 8mph. 6) Once your wind value is determined, cut the value in half and that is your calibrated Wind Dot value. a) 8mph wind value / 2 = 4mph Wind Dot. The reason you cut your wind dot in half is because you are calibrating the second Wind Dot. There are two Wind Dots within .95mils. Hope that helps

This reticle works perfectly with the examples of cartridges he has given, but when used with my actual load data the error is much worse. Using the methods shown for my 260 by the time I get to the 7th mil line or 830m, the amount of error is over .2mils which is half a foot. Whilst it is actually not too bad, by the time you add wind speed estimate error and angle of wind and all the other factors you are easily looking at a miss by a foot or more. I think this reticle looks good when engaging lots of large targets quickly, but considering the premium price this reticle adds to a rifle scope and the fact that you would still need a dope chart or reticle chart showing which range the mil lines/wind dots are accurate at, I'm not sure it's worth it.

We use the reticle every week and have zero issues on any caliber. We have shot 50 cal to .22 and everything in between. Most problems are the actual wind call that makes us miss, not an error in the reticle. The reticle can not have an error because you calibrate it to your ballistics and DA. That what the TOF dot does

Also I personally shoot a 260 as it is one of my favorite calibers and have zero problems. We shoot in high winds all the time, so if there was an error it would be multiplied

Exactly, I don't understand why so many manufacturers of long range rifles assume that the customer is using 100m or 100yd zeros. If one zeros at 100 then by the time one goes into the scopes highest magnification needed for a long shot it's out of viewing angle. One cannot merely use a click adjustment because then Z is no longer at 100yds (or otherwise near the peak of trajectory) and wind dots become miscalibrated [useless]. I zero my .308 (175gr) way out to 751m 😳. This keeps my near max target range (1km) within 6 mils @32×. The downside is I have to zoom out for more than a 2mil wind adjustment, OR click it up to zero for up to 6 mils wind adj. Click adjustments isn't ideal because click adjustments don't do very well returning to the exact same place. For near side that means 351m to 751m is viewable at 32× & w/o any click adjustment I can zoom out slightly for the additional 2.15 mils needed to bring the trajectory peak 82m into view. Which is fine, one doesn't need a massive 32× at such a short distance nor will there be huge wind adjustment either. All that said, I don't take deer below 1k ft.lbs, past 551m, or 3.43 mils above my scopes zero; which is 4.72mils below the trajectory peak. So if a person is only using their rifle for hunting a Z=100yd is acceptable (note: bigger game require even more energy to dispatch ethically thus a shorter range is required anyway). To go the otherway, I'm using a .17cal to take rabbits and similarly sized where the the combination of heavy wind influence, quick drop in energy, and accuracy of the rifle/ammunition isn't effective beyond 150-175m or just a couple mils from peak 56m. In summary, the Tremor3 reticle 100yd zero is probably fine for MOST hunters who don't engage Precision BenchRest (PBR) marksmanship. Would I use that zero in the military, NO; PBR, NO; (if I did) coyote hunting, NO (I'd also use a different round)! That said, I'm not spending $2k-$3k or more on a scope for my deer rifle. I do enjoy my scope with the Tremor3, but I don't use these wind adjustments. I do wish my scope had more mil illumination in the upper half of the reticle; where I would use it. Update: I discovered my Scopes ability to adjust the stop point to get the last mil adjustments. This does give me the ability to Z@100yd (now at 81 clicks w/ .1 mil clicks). Still the problem persists that if I Z@100yds, then I can't use wind dots past ~600m 🤬 seriously who calibrated the design for 100yds on a MIL-dot scope with 0.1 mil adjustments? You're driving a mortarman crazy. Stick with metric or Imperial measurements, metric preferred.

@@HorusVision I think in reality each dot is closer to 4 mph cross wind with my gun and load. although usually I just shoot a target at 100 yards (a 2 mil hold with a 50 yard zero for 22lr) to figure out which dot to use then stretch out from there. I've successfully used it to get first round hits at 200 (about 6 mil) and 300 (13 mil, have to hold in space since the wind dots stop at 10 mil but I just imagine line continuing out to there) yards in 15 -20 mph wind pretty frequently which is kinda crazy for a 22. @spldrong
@spldrong 5 лет назад
@rascalMatt17 the ACSS is a ballistic reticle that is only good for certain rounds travelling a certain speed out to a certain distance, it's basically a "best guess". It's great for the regular shooter, not precision shooting. If you can understand how "old school" sniping works with dialing for elevation and wind, the hourus reticle just simplifies that, and can work for ANY caliber.
