Thanks dude! I’m super stoked on it. There’s another popular one going around from the same brand but it looks kinda cheap and lame imo. I dig this one though!
@@dillansgarage absolutely! I’ve been building the coastal bumpers on my channel and I’m currently doing the rear now, but these are a good alternative option if someone doesn’t have the money to spend on the pre made bumpers or welding the coastal one👍🏿
@@Garrett_Logan For sure man. These cheap ones can’t compare to things like costal and victory in terms of quality, but if you’re on budget it’s not a half bad option. Just checked out your channel. Dig the content! Left a sub. I gotta do that washer relocate.
If anyone has a 4runner, especially the 06-09 year, get this bumper!! Got mine put on today, looks absolutely sick, wouldnt go back on it, completely changed everything 😅😅
Thank you! Glad you like it. I really enjoyed that bumper. I ended up getting another one from that same company but one with a winch mount. Did you see that video?
Thanks for this! Just finished putting on my son's 4runner. I'm not wild about th gap n the sides under headlights, because I don't think I can lift the bumper any more without affecting the spacers just under the headlights. Still, it looks awesome.
@@tfelich19 so I felt the same way about the gap until I got the lake bed going 50 and looked at the drone footage and saw how much the frame flexes and close the bumper gets to the fender flares at times even with the gap. Now I’m very pro-gap.
Damaged stock bumper is the perfect excuse! If you follow the link in my description there should be a coupon checkbox you can use before adding it to your cart on Amazon.
@@geoffniess1895 completely destroyed my front end. Ended up getting an ARB front replacement and wouldn’t go any other way next deer won’t be so lucky
Buddy!! Great video. The thing that stands out the most is that it’s all bolt no weld for that price. That being said, the addition cost not added. MOVE bumpers are cheap too, but needs weld at that price. The tax and shipping are a key. The bumper is 395 but $100 ship plus tax. Regardless, this is damn good. Would like to see more radiator coverage at the bottom bit easy to make additional plate.
I’ve definitely thought about adding a plate at the bottom. Thinking of ways to do it that doesn’t require fab work since most people doing this bumper aren’t fabricators. I’ve definitely looked at move and even considered trying one out now that they have a slimmer style available
This is a good low budget option but anything less than 3/16 inch plate steel isn’t any better than the stock bumper, for impact protection. Once you cut off the brackets in front for the stock bumper you can never reinstall it. For only 250 more you can get a Coastal Offroad bumper kit that is incredibly strong. The kits also require no cutting of any body parts or brackets on the 4runner. Very informative video nonetheless. Also someone could weld on additional plate steel to the back of the bumper, if they don’t mind repainting afterwards.
Only thing I’m worried about is not having those extra bumper supports in front of the radiator. But for $400 vs $1400+, seems worth the money. I used your viper cut video, loved it!
I have the same feeling. The more I think about it, the crash bar is pretty solid and I basically just removed that and added some lame 1/8” plate that looks cool. There’s a good chance I’ll be modifying it further with a winch plate and more protection like what you get with a more expensive and heavier bumper.
Looks good the mods are not hard mods to make to get this to fit if I needed a front bumper I would go this route but been rocking a arb bumper on my 4th gen for about 5 years nice video hope this helps some people.
I keep seeing guys question the strength of the steel bumper. Did ya see what he removed. It was a POS square steel tube from the factory. There is no question that this bumper is at least as strong as what Toyota sold it with. My worry is how exposed the AC condenser is. Thats not a cheap fix when it leaks and the compressor craps out. Love the look of it tho
Amen. It’s so funny to me when people talk about the quality.. I’m not sure how anyone’s can overlook that they’re comparing it to plastics and a little crash bar lol. The condenser is definitely a concern. I do plan to add a skid to cover that gap. Currently thinking of options that most people would be able to do. I could easily bend and weld in new steel, but that doesn’t help many people. The goal of the project was to make it very accessible. Did you see my new bumper video? Did a winch bumper this time. Only $500
@@dillansgarage you have to cut them off. I installed the full size first and I hated the way the lined up at the time. After all the cuts I made on the plastic after the fact to fit 35s it would not have been a problem. But I really at the time was wanting the victory Stryker hybrid. So I just made my own version with that bumper. I. It worked great for me until I I started hitting the harder trails and wanting the extra approach angle . It looks great and you did a great job and awesome video explaining the process. Just a little bit of a heads up. I would recommend reinforcing the recovery points. I have seen them peel open like a tin can at that area.
@@AntonioClaudioMichael I think it’s 78 Lbs. I’m not the strongest dude and was able to handle it myself. It’s a lot lighter than most other steel bumpers.
Iv been looking a cheaper option bumper for my 1st gen sequoia. Iv seen this bumper on a 1st gen tundra around where I live. Might have to do some of that more extensive welding and get it down. Just don't want to pay $1400 for one and have to wait 8 weeks. Iv also heard that the 2nd gen tundra bumpers can work too with a little creativity.
I just ordered this, gonna weld 1/4 plate over the mounting holes and attempt to drill new holes 2 inches down to accommodate my BL. Measured and So I ordered a 6x7 1/4 steel plate.Hopefully all works well! I will update after I get it done.

Such a great idea! All it needs to be done is reinforce it to be stronger and fab a plate to cover the lower part completely. Any ideas for a cheap rear bumper? or easy affordable DIY?
You read my mind! Just needs a lower skid basically. There are some cheap 5th gen rear bumpers that fit 4th gens really well. As soon as my budget allows I’ll be doing that too! Also, I’m getting ready to release another front bumper video, but with an affordable winch bumper! That’s coming very soon.

I haven’t made one yet. You’re the first one to ask. If a couple more people ask then I’ll prioritize it more. Doing a lot of installs right now though so that one is currently lower on the list
Excellent video. What is preventing the bumper from sitting higher to eliminate the gap between the bumper and the fender? Looks like it should have been mounted about 1/2" higher.
Thank you! The mount holes where the bumper mounts sit on the frame horn would allow it to go up more. I’m consider cutting and welding the mounts a little higher.
@@MonkeySwing will do! You theoretically could just cut the bottom of the mount holes and make them taller, but that would negatively affect the strength of the mount on the bottom edge. I’ll probably make a video of relocating the mounts, and adding a winch plate.
Could you try to get this comment higher up please. Dillon could you make a video about if the Hooke road 2nd gen Tacoma rear bumper will fit on your 4Runner?
@@Knarlytrestlebiker howdy! Your best bet will be to get a 5th gen 4Runner rear bumper. Just trim your oem bumper to fit and bolt it on. There are affordable options for 5th rear bumpers too
If you watch my most recent bumper video you can see how much flex there is offroad. I’ve learned since this video that you really don’t want the gap to be any smaller.
I really liked it too before I got the newww one with a winch mount. Did you see the other bumper video I made? Link is in the description to buy this bumper!
Thank you. It’s very sturdy. It’s all 1/8” plate so not as robust as bumpers made with 3/16 and 1/4 plate. But it also weighs half. I guarantee it sturdier than the plastic bumper I took off lol It’s not intended to be a direct replacement for the heavier duty bumper you get for $2,500. It’s a super budget option. Some modification could make really strong. But there’s a lot of people who are just looking for better clearance and approach angles on a budget, this is for them.
Man that is awesome because that's the only reason that I haven't gotten a steel bumper for my '03 could you give me some details on what you actually bought what bumper it was I'm definitely going to do this to mine

@@chrissamsel6278 it will totally work on your 05. Just need to get fog lights that have Amber turn signals built into them. if you look at my parts list and description, you’ll find those lights in there
You’re welcome! Thank you! The pickup truck bumpers are so much different i don’t imagine the body line would fit well with it, maybe with some creative cutting. I would be more likely to look for a cheap 5th gen 4Runner rear bumper and make that work. Might do that at some point.
I am too! Ha it’s a good question. This is a very light, high clearance bumper. After removing the crash bar there seems to be some vulnerability to the bottom of the AC condenser and radiator. The steel is a little thinner than more expensive steel bumper which can be both good and bad. My thought is it will more likely crush under pressure more like a stock bumper, whereas a super heavy steel bumper is more likely to send the shock of impact to passengers rather than absorb it. It’s the same reason your airbags are more likely to deploy in a small fender bender when you have a heavy steel bumper. The sensors feel a more sudden impact due to the lack of absorption.
@@dillansgarage low iq person here but how do you compare it for safety, both on and off road, versus the stock? Obviously looks better but is it more effective
@@Boreganic I’ve pondered this same question. When I think about it, two things come to mind. 1. I removed the crash bar and now there isn’t seemingly not much where that was. Although the crash bar is not exactly that beefy, it’s something for protection at the frame horn height. 2. 95% of the the original is plastic so there’s zero protection from the formed plastic meaning the crash bar is the only substantial protection. So it’s not like this is a $2k bumper with 1/4” steel and weighs 250 lbs. But I also can’t imagine this is much different than just the crash bar.
I was honestly a little nervous too. I’ve done other cutting and mods on the 4Runner and the very first cut is always the most nerve racking. But eventually it becomes no big deal and when something needs to be trimmed, you just do it lol eventually you become numb to it. I just got a brand new grill from Trail Runner Customs and the first thing I did was cut it to fit the bumper

@@dillansgaragethursday is gonna be the day I think I order it, I probably shouldn't, but man I probably won't find this ever again AND you got lucky cause you got it 100 bucks cheaper than me now lol
Good question. It feels very sturdy when I bang on it with my hands and push on it. But being 1/8” plate all around it’s not exactly the most robust bumper. That’s why I plan to add some reinforcement when I mod in a winch plate. This video was about the cheapest bumper, not the best, so can’t really expect to compare to something that weighs 2-3x more. I would normally do my modifications before install but I wanted to show it start to finish with basic tools. I only plan to add rigidity around the area where the crash bar was. I appreciate it not being “too strong” as I also respect crumple zones.
Thank you! I don’t think it would work on your gx cause the grill hang a lot lower on the gx. Curious though, wonder if a 3rd gen Tacoma bumper would work cause it also has a lower grill. Something like this might do it: amzn.to/3snReDl Hasn’t been tested yet so I wouldn’t know for sure. If you’re in southern California I’d be happy to help try it.
@dillansgarage Sadly, I'm in Texas DFW area. Coastal offroad is the best budget bumper for GX470 so far. If the GX and 4runner frame have the same structure, it might work with your video but not 100% sure of it either...
@@sanghoonlee2019 The bumper from my video will bolt on to your frame, but the grill and body are a different design and require a different fit with the bumper
@dillansgarage I got you. I have decided to get the bumper from coastal offroad. That's the cheapest one from my search so far. Do you have any other options I can consider?
It wouldn’t fit without custom fabricating new bumper mounts. The frame horns and mounting locations are different. At that point you could use any bumper to do the same thing, but you’ll need a skilled welder to do the job right. You’ll also need to trim the bumper or grill more if you have a 06-09 4r
I definitely don’t think it’d look bad on a stock rig. If you’re running smooth looking road tires might not fully match the vibe. But I still think it’d look better over stock
You have two options. 1. Easiest option would be to replace the included LED pods with a pair that has DRL/turn signal built in. Then all you need to do is get a wire adapter so you don’t have to cut your OEM harness. I addressed that in my other bumper video. $500 4th Gen 4Runner Offroad Steel Winch Bumper ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FAHQGlGvU0Y.html 2. Upgrade your headlights to the 06-09 stale. I don’t have a video about that but there’s definitely videos on RU-vid that can help
With most metal bumpers yes. This one is less than half the weight of a lot of other bumpers so the affect on your suspension will be minimal. If you already have sagging front springs, then you’ll want new coil anyway. This bumper is only 78lbs. An ARB bumper without the winch is closer to 200lbs and would definitely cause sag on the front end.
A traditional steel bumper will weigh about 120 pounds without winch. No mods are necessary to the front struts unless they are already worn out. I am pleasantly surprised that this bumper weighs 78 pounds. That’s a lot of metal for 400 dollars, already painted.
I looked into this. The grill and headlight are too different. It wouldn’t make sense to use this one. Maybe a 3rd gen taco bumper though since those are lower.
They do. I’m actually working on a new video right now with one of Hooke Road’s winch bumpers. It’s only $499. My winch comes in on Friday so I’ll probably have the video up next week. The first bumper on the list is the one I’m working on. www.amazon.com/shop/dillansgarage/list/1LCPM0D9VQHKD?ref_=aipsflist_aipsfdillansgarage One of my followers got the Pofenze winch bumper, used my video steps to install, and sent photos after. It worked well, but the wings don’t follow the body lines as well.
It will fit. There will be. Small gap under the grill since the 03-05 version doesn’t stick down, and you’ll have to figure out a blinker solution since you 03 blinker is in the bumper. Most people will update their headlights to 06-09 when they do this. There’s many videos on RU-vid about it.
@@CaseyMinor-bh9jj Awesome! Now it's something you'll never forget haha. I definitely learned that the hard way also. I did mention that possibility in the video too, but I know it's easy to miss a short piece of dialogue! Happy to help!

@@dillansgarage that’s the rub. I actually bought a welding machine but it was not cheap. Prices to weld together 18 pieces of plate steel, grind it smooth, primer and paint and install it are not cheap either. I would like to see more people with older 4runners and other good trucks, find a way to install a steel bumper and your videos are a great way to do that.
lol? The gap is very acceptable and you need a gap with steel bumpers otherwise you risk crushing your headlights and fender flares when articulating offroad. Also, if you want the gap too small, just extend the mount holes so you can push the mounts up more. Much easier than building a whole bumper from scratch.
@@dillansgarageI was planning on welding 1/4 plate to the back of the bumper over the original mounting holes are but just re- drill the holes 2inches lower. Do you think this would work?
