I think that subway tile has a cyclical appeal and will ALWAYS be a classic. When we have gone through every design trend imaginable, subway tile will still remain. Now, I do not think that I want to see it in a multi-million dollar home per se, but I do think it has timeless appeal in the average home and will not go out of style as the mosaics have...

I think a big issue with these trends is they don't usually translate well outside of their intended environment. So, farmhouse only really works if you live on a farm, and industrial doesn't make sense much beyond a warehouse that's been converted for loft living. I always think the *type* of property is the best starting point for building your design ideas, which won't always be the same as the things you love. I live in a Victorian building in a 'hipster' area and the overall style I've gone for here would look very out of place in a modern apartment.

SO true! The style and setting of the home dictates the style of the inside , or at least it should. My home is traditional in style, once I redid the master bed and bath in a modern style. It felt SO off. I thought it was just me and that would get better and I would get used to it, but no,it never felt right. I finally submitted and redid one more time back to an updated traditional style and viola , it felt right again. I realized that the style just did not go with the rest of the homes overall structure and style.
@anonnymous4684
@anonnymous4684 Год назад
@@tamb7587 Yes, exactly. And I'm sure the modern style you had gone for was nice enough, just simply not suitable in that setting. In a different building it could have looked great. I''m actually trying to update my apartment now, and it's surprisingly difficult to find anything that really works beyond what I have already. It's as if that style is optimal, and any divergence from that is never going to look and feel quite as good.

What is on-trend in your home is anything that you love and that makes you happy. If you don't have the budget to redecorate every time you get bored, go with things that are easier to change out. If you're worried about your guests judging you... do you really need their negativity? At this house, if it's hard to clean, forget it! When I had tile flooring installed in a high dog traffic area, I purposely selected grout that is basically the color of grime. Best decision ever.

I don't think you get Valentina's, and other decorator video's, they are not telling you to get rid of this or that, they are not telling you to redecorate the way they say when you get bored of what ever, they are educating you on ideas in decorating when your ready to make a change, and can afford to change something when you want so you don't make mistakes, or just give you new ideas. You are absolutly correct in people judging you on your homes style, you don't need that negativity, and they are not your friends anyway if they do, unless your home is filthy, or your a hoarder then the person needs intervention, but that is not the topic here, it's about decorating ideas. SOOO since you don't want judged don't judge.

I love redecorating! Now I’m not saying I can afford it! But for the first time in over 20 yrs my husband has finally painted the inside of our house and we our getting new hardwood floors! My normal idea of of updating is selling what I don’t want, then going and buying what I do want to redo my home! I have money to spend on what I want and as long as I saved ahead of time, I can buy that new rug, new bedding ext. but rarely can I afford new furniture!! No wonder North America is such an unfulfilled culture. Learn to love what you have, be grateful for it and if you want to change up a bit, then think about refinishing and buying things to cover things like cushion covers etc. Stay within your budget, love what you have and stop looking at what other people have and be thankful for what you have and your own unique 'you'!

We built our house 12 years ago, and at the time, I chose the dark walnut cabinets and floors that were all the rage at the time, along with busy brown, tan and cream granite. A year later we added glass tile backsplash in cream, clear and tan. Immediately, I hated it, as it was too busy looking, but I let a decorator lady pick it out and talk me in to it. Fast forward to almost two years ago… every designer was telling us we should put white subway tile in, because it’s classic and will never go out of style! We used a longer subway tile with a little “wave” in it, as it looks a bit more modern. We replaced the granite with a very pale creamy gray. Now, the last thing I want to hear is how my choices are “ out”! Too bad, because that cost an arm and a leg to do! WHO can afford to go with the latest trends when it comes to tile and countertops? 😩 My newest choices are not loud, busy or obnoxious. I think your choices are good for many years to come. It really is about location. I’m in the Midwest and designers don’t dial into new trends here quickly. We owned a lighting showroom, I was the Lead designer and purchaser at the Dallas Market. Gold became a hot finish and our clients didn’t go for it until 6 or 7 years in. Now it’s popular. Subway tile is popular in new construction and yes Gray still is as well. In my new build I went with creams, taupes & browns. I chose a longer waved white subway tile with white grout. It’s a clean, calm look for the kitchen. If I lived on the coast then maybe I would have chosen differently.🤷‍♀️

My design philosophy is to avoid trends. A home should be designed around its bones and architectural details. A period home, for instance, shouldn't be stripped of its features because a trend dictates minimalism. Nor should a mid-century home be 'themed' to look like a farmhouse. I spend a lot of time on Zillow, and I am always disappointed to see an 1800s exterior with a mid-1990s interior. I'm not suggesting homes should be frozen in time, but design choices should enhance the home's character, not distract from it. I think subway tile is a classic look that will never be out of style in the right home.

They charged me the delivery fee so they didn’t have to pay to dump it. I used it on my countertops, kitchen floor, entry floor, master bath floor and HUGE shower. I used cement colored grout. It was GORGEOUS!!! I regret to this day selling that house. I LOVED it. It was indestructible and so very easy to clean. I’ve even tried to buy the house back. The current owners love it as much as I did. I paid $148,000 for the house before I renovated it. It’s now worth about $650,000. That’s a regret I will carry to my grave. There’s not another house like it ANYWHERE! I had a close friend who was a decorator. She said it was a once in a lifetime thing. Those glorious green countertops still haunt my dreams. Strange thing is that I saw where glazed terracotta tile is the latest thing. I did it in 1994.

Hello from Scandinavia here 😊 I can confirm that nobody's doing high gloss laminate here. 😄But what most of us use a lot of, and love, is wood. Mostly oak and with a bit of white stain, not yellow toned wood but more neutral toned. Also I feel like here (I'm in Norway) we're a bit finished with white walls, and using more colors than ever. Not bright colors, but calm colors. It's interesting to see how trends are different around the world, I don't think that farm house style that Americans have been very into has been much of a thing here.

This is my first time watching one of your videos, so hello! 👋🏻 I've loved subway tile since I was a little girl. However, when it came time to redo my kitchen I skipped it because it was everywhere. I went with soapstone countertops and a light-grey, glass, arabesque tile backsplash. Looks gorgeous and unique! About tile countertops: I had them for twenty years in my old, 1950s house. They were great! They didn't stain or crack and were heat-safe. The grout lines were very narrow and easy to clean. I think the grout today is more textured, so it's harder to maintain.

Open shelves collect dust and look messy in most homes because owners end up putting mismatched dishes and items on them. I think closed off upper cabinets are still desirable and very practical for most homes. I never got on the Gray rails in decor because I am old enough to remember it from the 80's and I just couldn't go back there. I have SW White Duck on my walls. I love this color for my NE facing home. It brightens it up and is a very workable color. Warm colors are my jam and I am SO happy this trend is coming back.

Being a true country person ( farm , horses , dogs , cats & an occasional visiting raccoon in the barn ! ) the whole " country / farmhouse trend " , past to present , has always struck me as funny ! True country is not contrived or cutesy - homes are welcoming w/ hot coffee & a piece of pie , a place where you are comfortable in jeans & boots & throws on the furniture for the dogs . We don't have time to dust open shelving & dozens of accessories - there's too much work that must be done & when we do have " spare time " ( ha ! ) it's w/ family & friends . Homes have well-worn , well-loved furniture , true antiques that hold meaning & pictures ( not " art " ) of special people & events . No signs are needed as reminders as country people live their philosophies & beliefs . 🐎🐕🐈‍⬛ 🦝 💟

I haven’t seen an IKEA since I left the West Coast. We are all craving what’s new but we also want to embrace cozy; it’s a difficult balance. You modernists struggle more with overbuying current trends and we traditionalists struggle more with embracing change. I appreciate your fairly balanced approach. Tiled countertops? Still great on vacation in Mexico and in Italy. There’s a time and place for most everything.

I don’t follow trends. I prefer style. There’s a huge difference. I have always leaned towards warm natural decor. I don’t like trends at all. Everything you are listing can be repurposed or up cycled into style. Don’t just slap paint on it. Sand it down to its natural color and go from there. I love the look of Early American Oak. It’s not too light nor dark. You can use it with any style of furniture and wall paint (no wallpaper for me!!). I painted my kitchen-living room walls Dusty Pink because my they connect but different textures. Every year the same color comes out with a different name. It’s the perfect neutral and my husband doesn’t mind it. He actually likes female touches around the house but I will not allow any stuffed animals hanging on my walls.

Been renovating for almost 2 yrs, one tiny step at a time. I had builder grade painted puke-green walls in my kitchen for 20 yrs. After we finished educating our kids, our focus went to renovating as opposed to maintaining. I chose glass white subway tile with black grout for the backsplash. It’s the first thing everyone notices. It shines, and in my opinion looks high end. My tile guy tried his best to talk me into white or gray grout and was not happy to have to cut all that glass. I was against white or gray grout, as it made the white standout, and it’s easier to maintain. Maybe it’s the glass, but I wouldn’t change it, ever. I also paired it with high-end white appliances (another no-no apparently), professionally installed wallpaper, a white farmhouse sink, new faucets, new jewelry (pulls), and new lighting. We’re still saving for quartz counter tops and re-staining our cabinets in walnut. Our cabinets are 2000’s honey oak, but custom. So we’re not painting or removing, as they’ve been maintained. So, I think the glass for subway tile with a darker grout, is not as “dated” or “dead.” White painted cabinets will make the kitchen too white. I like the contrast of wooden finish cabinets against the white tile backsplash and hopefully white quartz counter tops. My 2 cents. . .

I think the house should fit the area/location. When we lived in the mountains, our house was more of a warm, cozy cabin though it was a large house. Our house in the city was a 1928 Tudor, but decorated in a modern dtyle. Now we live in an agriculture area known for its wineries. So, we live in a "modern farmhouse". Styles change so often that it's impossible to always fit....live in what YOU like. BTE, love your upbeat attitude! 👍

I don’t think modern farmhouse will ever completely go out in my area (North East Texas). That style came from modernizing what decor you could easily find in your grandparent’s barn and antique stores. Mason jars, galvanized milk jugs, and barn wood can basically be free. Some people go overboard and ruin it for everyone🤦🏼‍♀️. Cheap box store items and signage needs to end to scale back on the “themeyness”.

I find it soothing after dealing with the constant choices I have to make each day for clients...I should add that I work in the Middle East , so it's a lot of OTT design !!
