The sad thing is most British people know nothing about the British Empire because it is very deliberately not taught in British schools, because there is no national pride in learning that Britain was the greatest parasite nation in human history and all their wealth comes from stealing from their colonies. So they are used to a romanticised fantasy version of the British Empire in movies like Zulu, that makes British colonialism of stealing people’s land, wealth and resources look heroic. So when these British guys a confronted with a more truthful less heroic representation of the British Empire, you can see it leaves them uncomfortable, because white people tend to bury history where they are the villains.
I'm a gigantic fan of Trevor Noah. The people who think he's not funny are the ones who see him as preachy about politics and dislike it. Woke politics may get overboard at times but at its center its trying to accomplish something good. We need people who preach just as we need people who don't. Regardless, I've read his book and he's such an interesting person and he's made me laugh so hard.
The British initially just wanted to trade and buy pepper, because it got more expensive in Spain. But then they realised that the Indians don't have weapons, but the country was quite rich. They had gold in the walls of their temples. So the British just raided the temples . And took India.
British Capitalism conquered India. The East India Company abused a royal charter for trade to maximize profit. Much of parliament was bought off and it wasn’t until the company ruined India that the upper government and crown stepped in.
The word great in Great Britain is the same as the word greater in Greater Manchester. It's describing the fact that the combination of England, Wales, and Scotland creates the larger area of land called Britain. The word greater is often used to describe extended geographical areas that are influenced by another area (e.g. in culture or economy). There's even a Greater India. Obviously, that kind of description wouldn't get a lot of laughs.
Yeah good point on Greater India. Actually similar concept is followed in India. I am from Hyderabad, though technically I live in Greater Hyderabad (a name given to extended outskirts of Hyderabad).
We do that in the states as well. "the greater X area" we usually just refer to a major city and it's surrounding suburbs. Usually all the suburbs that share a county with a major city.
@@SuperForza23 maybe he’s capable of separating politics/beliefs and can enjoy someone’s work for what it is. You should try it sometime instead of letting your political views blind you 🤷♂️
@@MM-jc7uv I don't like him as the Daily Show host. I've enjoyed some of his standup. He's not even close to a favorite of mine, though. My opinions of him are more based off quality of content rather than politics. I don't lean heavily to either side. Nuance is still a thing despite the oppressively black and white type of thinking many people seem to want to enforce.
I'm from a part of Cameroon that was colonized by the Brits also and have watched Indians react to this stand-up but never British people, so it was so exciting watching you guys react to him.
Hate all you want, just get it into your head, anybody that makes a living telling jokes IS FUNNY! Whether they sell out arenas, less known club comedy night performers , a boring late night TV host etc.
I never understood why people who disagree politically with comedians have to shout about them not being funny. It sounds spoiled and self-centered to call people unfunny when there are literally hundreds of thousands of people who watch his show to get a laugh. Maybe you don't find him funny, but that's the thing about humor; different people find different things funny. If you're too dimwitted to understand that and you feel like ranting about how unfunny a comedian is just because you disagree with them politically, then you should go back to the basement you crawled out of.
Isn't "Great Britain" the name of the island you live on, the one that contains England, Wales, and Scotland? I mean, the actual island itself, not any particular country that's on the island.
My understanding is that "Great Britain" is an evolution of "Greater Britany" as the Celtic peoples that colonized what is today southern Great Britain were largely from the Britonic tribes of Britany in North Western France.
I always thought Great Britian meant the combination of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. In other word's greater Britian under the Queen's rule!
As an American I’ve always been curious about that across the pond. I’m sure it probably runs the spectrum. Some miss the empire, some have mixed feelings (yeah empire did some bad things but also helped modernize other countries), and some people are perhaps self loathing about it (John Cleese had a bit about this statue of a cormorant somewhere “dedicated to the men who died trying to keep China British”). 😂 I’m sure opinions on the history and the pride of just being an empire probably run the spectrum like I say. I was wondering if there was a generational component to it like if missing the empire was an “old folks thing” or if younger more “woke / politically correct” university kids look on it with more disapproval? Or do feeling ever change over time? Like as a lad learning about it in school and what have you do you feel more pride about it and then as you age you kinda see the other side or end up somewhere in the middle then as you learn the other countries points of view? How much of it is baked into the national psyche? Like us Americans going our own way and doing our own thing and all that that’s part of our national identity. What bearing does the Imperial...-ism? Or Imperial mindset what have you, does that factor in into daily life at all and if so to what extent?
The empire did some terrible things and it also did some great things. Personally I choose to celebrate the right side of our history rather than dwell on the bad. It's not like we can change it or like anyone alive today had anything to do with it. Nowadays you will hear the "woke" types ranting about how ashamed we should feel about it, but, it's not like we try and make Germans feel ashamed of their past. Acknowledge that it happened, and move on.
I have to ask you, being an American, how do you feel about the fact that USA wanted a piece of the colonial actipn, and colonized the Philipines, occupied and ceded Hawai and keeps Puerto Rico as a protectorate?
This comment section is filled with Trevor haters. I mean if you don't like someone or what they do just don't watch it. Why you dissing the blokes for reacting to him? You aren't the only viewers of this channel. There are those who requested him who find him funny. Jeez...people are trippin. PS: Talking about hating someone and how unfunny they are...you making them stay relevant. Now imma search all of You Tube for his videos. 😂😂😂
What England did, and many others through history, was never right through todays lens but at the time was magnificent for the winning parties. As a race of people we have in our past in every country used strength as the test. If you are not strong enough then nature will not pity you. If another country at the time found themselves in technological pre eminence such as India Im sure we would be talking about the horrors inflicted on Europe by Indians or the collective Indian influence over Europe still. Or do you really think those 1600-1800s Indians were all sunshine, puppies and forgiveness. In the end we are all just people and in those times if you couldnt defend what was yours then be ready to lose it. This is partly why we have the UN as since the 1940s (thats recent really) we collectively decided that might was no longer right. The past is sometimes only bad for the losers and sadly or not this is still with us, we have winners and we have losers.
This joke is funny but out of date, Today people call him god, back then they called him god usually followed by his name in the christian bible of the time which was Jahova, predating that Yahweh.
Lol did they say Indian guy was racist…I think you got wrong point there. And British were more racist than anyone else in this world while they were in India.
There are defferent forms of god's, but he is one even in India. it was just a joke.( Some one forgot to differentiate between devtas and the bhagwan (god))
Okay, I will be that guy. The guy who analyzes a comedy bit. There are three monotheistic religions, and while they are very different…they all acknowledge YHWH as God. Especially medieval Britain would have known the name of their God to be YHWH or Jehovah.
Colonization of India gave us IPA (India Pale Ale) and that's making American craft breweries billions a year. Let's see, that's one former colony ripping off another colony and the colonizers at the same time. No problem...that's very American. We colonize ideas and then make them better. You know like the French and their inferior wines.
It was most likely called Brittania Magna by the Romans just like Germania Magna (greater part of Germany). It was mostly called that due to size, not an attribute.
The name Great Britain was derived from the name Greater Britain which was used to refer to the island on which the kingdoms of England and Scotland were and at points in history prior to that there was Greater (Great) and Lesser (Little) Britain, with Lesser Britain referring to either Ireland or the kingdom of Brittany in France (both of which are smaller in area than GB), depending on who or when the name was being used but the Greek equivalent of Greater Britain was used by the Greeks, so it's not a new thing or even something the British invented.
Only Jesus is hurled during sex, violence or between bad words...I think that's how he is pursued in that religion Hindus or any other religion don't bring god's name in every thing...
Baby versus system where bye if you call out this god's name then that means you're feeling this or if you call out this other god's name batman's you want your partner to keep doing what Hi She is doing. It reminds me of a story. I dated a gentleman by the name of James. His ex-wife's name is Lisa. My Name is Lesa but it's spelt with an E. So I would tell people That in the moment of heated passion when he is calling out my name Lesa, Lesa, Lesa I had to ask him to spell it so I knew which Lisa he was talking about.
While I agree that Trever Noah can be quite funny at times regardless of his political views or standing as many of his jokes have nothing to do with politics but his life experiences, the basis for your argument is fundamentally wrong. You are effectively saying that Trevor Noah being a product of South Africa's Apartheid means he has free license to say what ever he wants to anyone and about anything because if you don't like it then that means you are a baby who cannot handle that you have it better than poor Trevor. Hate to break it to you but not only is that a very poor left wing argumental strategy, when used in the context you have used as many on the left do, it is racist AF, not to mention that there are many discriminated groups that very well might have been just as bad or worse than him rendering your argument even more invalid. Not liking someones jokes or being critical of them does not automatically make someone a crybaby nor does being a victim or having been a victim or part of a group that is considered victims automatically make you immune from criticism for the rest of your life. Grow up and maybe you won't see a bunch of babies, in your case peers, around you as much.
They weren't laughing because he's just not funny. Listen instead to Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, George Carlin. I'm not saying Trevor is a douche. It's just that...I don't know how to finish this senence.
Fun fact!: Trevor Noah did a stand up bit in South Africa right after the police there opened fire into a crowd of striking mine workers, killing several people. Trevor took the side of the police…

When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land. They said 'Let us pray. ' We closed our eyes. When we opened them we had the Bible and they had the land.
